I was called SWEETPEA, the other day, not just once, but practically every sentence had SP in it.

Mention the "Hon" business on a note on the evaluation. I would just say that the tech was very proficient, but this irritating mannerism takes away from her professionalism, which was obvious in everything else.

Those 2 I can live with. I just hate "you guys". Look again. I'm NOT a guy.

I still hate Ma'am. That's my MIL. Hon doesn't bother me but it doesn't sound very professional in my opinion. Not sure I would like to be called that in a medical setting.

I totally agree with you. The same thing happened to me a while ago. I could just ignore him and didnt even talk to him. If i was to fill out that questionaire I would write that she had a good job but the 40 times she called me hon really bothered me. I think it is just a bad habit she picked up, but i think it should be brought to someones attention so they know how you feel. I am sure you are not the first or the last that feels the same way about this

Maybee, the first sentence of your post reminded me of the pet rabbit that we had about 5 years ago. She was a lop eared female and weighed about 20 pounds. My DH named her Matilda The Bun... I think "Hon" is kinda regional. I know when you enter the city of Baltimore, there is a sign that says, "Welcome to Baltimore, Hon" It's part of the culture....

I also do like being called Hon multiple times. I can grin and bear it a couple times, but repeatedly would become distracting. From a stranger, it just sounds insincere, presumptuous, even condescending.

In a professional situation, like a medical procedure, I'd prefer if the tech/nurse/doc would just remember my name! That would sound so much more caring and professional than a generic "hon."

I really think we should have been made with flaps on our ears, so we could block out things we don't want to hear. Of course they wouldn't develop until after the teenage yrs, and much later in men, etc. (OK, I'm being stupid.)

I would like to know of a comeback when people do this. I guess we would be perceived as impolite if we said anything to the offender.

I work in IT tech support. A bunch of the techs are young guys and they're pretty much always calling each other "Bro," or "Dude," and stuff like that. They treat me with respect, and it doesn't bother me to hear the "Bro" and "Dude" stuff. But, there's one tech who just really doesn't fit in with the rest. He tried using the "Bro" bit a few times, but I think the other guys sort of let him know that he shouldn't be doing that. So now this guy is always using "Buddy" and "Partner" -- but he uses it excessively when he's talking to our "customers" -- the end users (employees) in the agency. It drives me nuts. I'm about ready to say something to his supervisor, so she can tell him he's not speaking professionally to our users.

I can't stand it when nurses I work with call our patients (especially the older ones) honey, baby, sugar, sweetie pie, etc...

I don't like being called those names either...especially when I go through a drive thru fast food place and some pimpley-faced teenager calls me "honey".

I've noticed a regional component to "Hon" and "Ma'am". Both are used much more frequently here in central Florida than they were near Chicago.

The one expression that drives me crazy is when someone calls me "Young Lady", when I'm not.

Well, I'm in Iowa and it just drives me up the wall....yes, sometimes the person is younger than I am and then I find it condescending....this gal yesterday wasn't that much younger than I am...and if it had just been once or twice, I might not have cared, but I was gritting my teeth by the time I got out of there. You can deal with people without doing that. I had a CAT scan (but, it isn't just medical workers who do this) the day before and the two gals in there managed to do the procedure without calling me names...

Over usage of any word gets on my nerves, so I'm right there with ya, Maybee. (I was going to say "Hon", but didn't want a slap upside the head this early in the day! lol) After about the 3rd time, I think I would say "please, call me Susan, or Mrs. Smith, anything but HON!" To me, that shows a laziness on the part of the user, they can't be bothered to notice your name and use it, so they fall back on the familiar.

I completely agree with Monica, mention her good points but bring up the irritating ones, too. She deserves to know that she is bugging her patients.

I also agree with Lynne's comment, I think that calling an older woman "young lady" is very patronizing. I had a young man call me "young 'un" several years ago and it just went all over me, I was totally creeped out by that. He was like 20 to my 45. Ick, shiver, shudder.

I would mention it in the evaluation. If it bothered you, then it bothers others and the technician should be told. She needs to treat her clients with respect and "hon" doesn't quite cut it for me either.

Hon or Mam, guess it depends on the circumstance. I remember when we lived in Montana and I was waiting for an appointment, and this tall good-looking guy came in dressed in pressed jeans, white western shirt and a tan leather jacket. He had a nicely trimmed stash and a cowboy hat. Before he sat down in a chair, He sort of slightly bowed, tipped his hat and said in a real deep voice.....Howdy, Mam. Swoon! I could hear Mam everyday if it was delivered like that. LOL Dottie

I hate it when a male sales person (what we use to call a salesman) calls me a "young lady". It is obvious I am NOT young and questionable if I am a lady.

In my opinion "Hon" should not be used in a medical setting. "Hon" is what the waitress in the diner calls you "More coffee, Hon?".

It depends on the context for me.

I wouldn't have been bothered by that technician, or a waitress. But a manager or a salesperson? No freakin' way!

One time an executive manager called me "honey" during a high level meeting. Of course I was the only female there, he probably assumed I was there to take notes for somebody. I certainly was NOT. My response was "My name is Dances, or Mrs. maiden name-married name" - then I answered the question. He kind of passed over it, and called me honey again a little later.

"Excuse me. I am not your wife, your daughter, your girlfriend, or your lover. I am also not a condiment. My name is Dances, or Mrs. maiden name-married name. Before going forward, are we clear on that?". We were clear ROFLMAO!

A little later after the meeting broke up another employee that I had known for a long time but never worked for said "It was so nice to see you again, darling!" and the executive manager pointed it out and asked how come I didn't flay HIM. Number one, it was not during the meeting. Number two, I do not report to this person nor is he above me in ranks. And number three, he did not say it in a demeaning way like he expected me to get him coffee and pick up his dry cleaning.

There was another person that I had worked with over many years on several projects, and he calls me "Babe". But never in a meeting and never in a professional context.

I don't like it either. I work a phone job and I hear some of my co workers use words as such and tell them how unprofessional it is.

It's either Ma'am or Hon that irritates me, usually said by a waitress. There's a guy from our shop who comes in every so often & always greets me by saying, "Hi there young lady". For some reason, that doesn't bother me, maybe because I like this guy anyway. But Hon said that often in a professional setting would drive me over the top. I would definitely mention it in that form somewhere.

Oops. You wouldn't want to be with me. I nickname everyone. Including animals.

I go for dialysis three times a week. One of the nurses, who is young enough to be my daughter, calls me "Honey." But she is the sweet one. I like her.
