Yes, I've done this, but it was to the local store. Jammer and I ate breakfast at a local IHOP and the service was terrible. Most things don 't bother me, but this really rubbed me the wrong way. So the next day I decided to write a letter to the manager. While writing the letter I started thinking about another breakfast restaurant in a neighboring town that always had excellent service and decided to write them a letter too.
I never heard from the IHOP and letter of complaint, but the other place wrote me a really nice letter back and thanked me for my letter. The manager said that they don't usually hear from the happy customers. He said he gathered his employees together that morning and read my letter to them and it put smiles on all their faces. He included gift certificates for 2 free meals there and 2 free meals at another restaurant that he managed.

Yes. I was once at a car rental counter at an airport, turning in my rental. The agent had been so nice to me and given me an upgrade. There was a man at the counter really reaming out the agent. I felt so badly for her. I asked for a comment card and praised her helpfullness and sent it in. I got a letter from the company thanking me and saying they sent a copy to the agent and her supervisor.

Yes, many times. It's a shame that more people don't take the time to praise rather than complain.

I called the manager of KFC, once, to tell him what a GREAT server he had at the drive-thru window.

Twice that I can recall I've written regarding good service. At Target a young girl in electronics was so patient and helpful when helping choose a digital camera I thought she deserved a commendation.

Another time during a bad weather delay situation at Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport I commended an airline clerk for getting my husband and I on a flight AHEAD OF TIME. Our scheduled flight was delayed an hour, then two, then three then possibly until the next day when we were called over the loudspeaker and given boarding passes and an upgrade on a flight that was leaving before our oringally scheduled flight. We were pretty happy with how the situation turned out.

Local McDonalds drive-thru servers, are the pits :o(

I normally try to make a comment while I'm at the store, restaurant or whatever, especially when it's a restaurant. I'm more likely to comment on good service than bad service. Should do something about that. But also tell the person too. Having been in retail I know what a day brightener it can be to have a sincere pat on the back rather than someone with an attitude trying to get something for nothing. I believe you should let them know when things are truly bad, but also you owe it to them to let them know when things are good. Otherwise, they'll just assume that bad is acceptable and the good will slide. Little things do mean a lot.

I've even been known to send a tip back to the cook for doing an outstanding job at a restaurant.

DH has many times, but he doesn't mind sending an e-mail also for bad service either.

I once wrote to a company telling them how much I liked their product. I was so surprised when I got a letter back with a bunch of free and cents-off coupons. I didn't expect it but was sure happy.
Another story, My sister works for Target and a man came up to her and asked where he could find aprons. She took him to housewares, but none there, then they went to the cook out stuff was, and they found what he wanted. He thanked her and went on his way. Turns out when he got home he called the store manager and complimented him on this fine employee they had. He didn't know her name, but she had dark, salt & pepper hair, quite short and......portly! LOL She appreciated the pat on the back anyway. Dottie

Yes, I have sent praise letters to the owner of our local hardware store, and to the headquarters of the local grocery. I received outstanding service in both places. Both headquarters sent copies of the e-mail to the store managers and to the employees mentioned.
There is so much poor service that good service should be praised to the hilltops!

I try to send comments for good service whenever I can! Seems like too many things these days are negative. I figure the managers will be more then happy to pass on good news, and the employees will get a pick up and continue their good work! Maybe even get a nice raise the next go around!

Frequently. I strongly believe if we're going to complain about bad service, it's our responsibility to compliment the exceptional service as well. And I do try to remember to do that when someone I deal with is very helpful.

Although sometimes, it can backfire a little. When I bought my last car, the sales person was just lovely. Couldn't have been more helpful, more efficient or more pleasant. I wrote a glowing letter about how much I appreciated how she handled the sale. Saw her a week or two later (when I was picking up my tags) and she told me--the manager called her into the office. She was really nervous, thinking she had done something wrong. And when she got there, it was because the manager wanted to share the letter with her before putting it in her file. Turned out okay, but I felt a little badly that she'd had a bad moment when she got 'that summons'.

Dh calls these 'Attaboy' letters. They go into personnel files, and they do help employees!
