Horse race ? watching Belmont

How are the gate numbers decided? Ice Box is #6 at 3 to 1. Fly Down is #5 at 6 to 1. Now we have Dave in Dixie #1 at 18 to 1. I would have thought that #6 would be in gate 12 since he is the favorite. Also isn't #1 closest to the rail. I have looked all over the web but can't find an answer. Did find that #1 wears red, # 6 wears black and #5 wears yellow. Tell me anything you know. DH and I are betting each other for $100. I took Dave in Dixie, know it is a long shot but Calvin Borel is the jockey.

pretty sure the positions are the luck of the draw........

Yep I'll be there watching on TV. I was actually at Belmont the year of the duel between Alydar and Affirmed. Affirmed won that day and he was the last Triple Crown Winner. None since. I love horse racing-the Sport of Kings.

Thank you for showing us the site. I love horses. I had them when I was young and well, I lived on my pony. If I could have I would have slept with her LOL. Everyday after school I'd race home to ride my pony. Even at 12 my pony was more important than boy's. We boarded our horses at a place that had a stallion, boy was he mean. I was told to stay far away from him. Our horses stall was right next to the stallions and one day I got a little to close and he reached out trying to bite me. He was an albino. Get this his name was babie LOL, his was huge about 16 hands or so.

I luuuvve Mint Juleps; sadly I can't drink them because of diabetes. I enjoy making them and everyone raves so I suppose they're good. I make my own simple syrup and try to get home grown mint. I'm loving just thinking about them now. We're not "watching" anything, as such. Wes is in the garage, sanding the entry doors to the almost-completed office and sewing room. After that we're painting the two rooms closets' frames in anticipation of hanging the closet doors. New bifold, half-louvered half solid for the two closets in my sewing room. New 6-ft. sliders for the office closet. We decided the entry doors were of far better quality than anything we could easily find to replace them with, so they're getting a major facelift and going back up. I'm also hooking up a new printer, roasting a chicken, catching up on laundry, putting away winter blankets, hanging a blind on the sunporch side of the west bedroom window, packing Mother's Day boxes, and thoroughly enjoying my day.

've read many accounts similar to what Alisande posted, and I know I'll never go to a horse race, because of the thought of a horse dying for sport/entertainment. That said, my cousin was the owner of "I'll Have Another" who won the Preakness and the Derby in 2012 and was going for the Belmont. But he was pulled from the race just prior, because of a slight inflammation on one of his forelegs. The trainer noticed it when the horse was being groomed after his practice run, although he had run it beautifully. He advised my cousin that even a minor swelling could cause permanent damage to a leg, if a horse is allowed to race before the swelling goes away. My cousin immediately pulled his horse from the roster, although he obviously would have loved to give him the chance for the Triple Crown. He loves horses and first got interested in them because his best buddy in high school worked as a groom. While I may not personally like the sport of horse racing, at least I was happy that my cousin did not put greed ahead of the safety of his horse, by allowing him to run in the Belmont.

I'm not really a team sport fan, and along with Lars I really detest loud yelling and screaming over sporting events. I think the Olympics come out about the right time apart from the previous Olympics that I don't mind watching some of it, especially individual events. (Or paired things like some of the skating.) Winter would be skating, skiing, and the bobsled thing. Summer is gymnastics, high jumps, and diving. I wish they'd show archery, because that's something I want to take up. I dislike football and baseball. Yawn. NASCAR is just loud cars. I didn't mind an ice hockey game I once attended, because I simply watched them skate - I didn't care where that puck went!

just found this.......

For just everyday races, someone in the racing office writes each of the entries in a race on a separate piece of paper "called the entry slip", then a similar number of "numbered pills" are placed in a shaker box. On person in the racing office pulls an entry slip for a horse and another person in the racing office pulls a "pill" from the shaker box. The number pulled becomes the horse's post position number. The horse will also wear the saddle cloth with the post position number. In the case of coupled entries (when an owner or trainer has more than one entry in a race)- the coupled entry will be numbered 1 and 1A and will wear that saddle number, however, the horse still goes into the post position numbered gate. For instance, lets say that horses with post positions 6 and 10 are coupled in an entry - the horses will still be placed in the gate according to the number that was drawn, but the saddle cloths will be numbered 1 and 1A.

For stakes races like "The Kentucky Derby" or "The Florida Derby", the racing office does the same thing except it is witnessed by viewers in the track on that particular day.
The drawings are conducted on a podium, usually televised over the track's television network. Anyone and everyone that is at the track on that particular day can witness the event.
