So Speaking of Trash...

as we were on the other thread.

I'm curious.

Do you pay for trash pick up, or does your town provide it?

How often?

What about 'special' items.

Here, we have town-provided pick-up once a week. We put out separate containers for: regular trash, lawn trash, paper, and the recyclables (aluminum, glass and plastic go into one barrel). We can put out white goods pretty much any time, and give the township a call--they send a truck to pick them up.

New house--town provides once a week pick up for: lawn stuff, recyclables, BUT regular trash is picked up TWICE a week! (with one 'trash day' being Saturday.) How convenient is that? Does anyone else have 2 pick ups a week? Considering the area is more rural than here, I was blown away when I found that out. I was half expecting to find that we had to pay for our own trash collection.

In our town, we pay for our own trash collection...we have 2X a week pick up. They will pick up almost anything under 100 lbs. heavier, only if pre-arranged.
The township picks up recyclables, for free...once a week.

When I lived in Olympia, we paid for garbage and recycling and they alternated every week, so garbage is only every other week, etc.

Here in Seattle, I've always lived in apartment buildings, so I know I didn't have to pay for it, but not sure if landlords paid or the city provided it for free. We have recycling laws also, you can get fined if recyclables are found in your garbage, so we recycle almost everything. I probably have double or triple the amount of recycling than I do garbage.

Hi there Gardener! Welcome to the fun of organics - ain't it great? My girlies just love all the critters that visit our house and are learning so much wonderful stuff whilst I know that we aren't poisoning them when they play in the yard. :) Where in the metro area are ya'll located? Take care, Christina

I am so bummed - canner is trash

I can see why you would want to stick to your smaller present canner. Why buy something you don't need if you can get the current one to work? I didn't realize the 8-quart Mirro would hold 4 1-quart jars but that does meet the standard. I wonder if it's true of current 8-quart Mirros, if they have changed at all. I'm trying to remember where/when I read the 12-quart was the smallest approved, and I'm guessing it's due to the fact that the 12-quart is the smallest that Mirro currently designates as a "canner". So that was a mistaken assumption on my part. Medcave, that quote about the 8-quart killing more spores is interesting. I've read some of those studies but not recently. We learn something new every day. My All-American 921 is big and heavy. What I love about it is siphoning is essentially non-existent. I'm speculating that the thickness of the walls reduces heat fluctuations. (I am careful but my Presto was definitely much touchier.) Carol

IslandBreeze- It's funny that you mentioned lake Srie because I may take my kids there Saturday. Our weather pattern continused to be the same. Rain is followed by heat. It was rainy and 85 yesterday and is supposed to be sunny and 90 the next couple of days. This may be the last real push of growth. If things calm down and are sunny and low 80s after this heat spell that's fine too. I think once things cool down to the 70s in the day and low 50s at night I may take things in for the night. Not because low 50s will hurt anything but I think it may be a way to extend the growing season. If indoors they will essetially have lows in the 70s rather than the low 50s.

We pay. The city runs it. We have curbside recycling for most materials. We are given two containers. We pay by the size of the trash container. The recycling container is huge. We can mix paper, plastic, glass and metal. Yard clippings are placed in the street.

Our town/city we pay for it and it's picked up weekly,as are the recyclables. It's billed on our water bill along with sewer etc.We can put out one oversize item a week, but must call for that PU the day before our regular PU.Our green waste is picked up on the same day as trash, and then whenever we want or need we can go to the green waste center and pick up free mulch.

Ours is very much the same as Wildchild only our yard clippings go in with the trash. Our garbage goes once a week and our recycling is every other week. They will take motor oil as long as it is in a container with a tight fitting lid and they have special pick up days for large landscape work that wont fit in the container.

Oh, just thought of another question.

Does anyone have separate trash and garbage pick up? When I was a kid, you had a can for garbage, and one for trash. They were picked up different days. Garbage was generally picked up by pig farmers and used for feed. That's no longer legal, so I imagine that's why there's no distinction these days, between trash and garbage most places around here.

The township picks up our trash twice a week from the middle of June to September 1. The rest of the year it's once a week. I guess they just don't want things to get too smelly around here.

We have the option of paying for a service to come once a week to pu a conainer. You must be able to close the lid or it won't be picked up.
Or you can purchase a decal from the county to take your own trash to the dump. The decal costs $65.00 and is good for a year.
You have the option to recycle if you want and you can take anything to the dump. Even old/used engine oil.

Once a week - we pay for it. Then we have Spring and
Fall, and special Curb pickups (brush, leaves, etc.) and
once a year large (appliances, etc.) trash pickups which
    the Township does.

I live outside the city limits in a well populated area.No city trash pick up.Up until about 3 years ago we had burn barrels and hauled our own trash to the dump ground because there was no other means of getting rid of the trash. We now have a dumpster through an independent company that started a business here. You can get different size dumpsters. Our pick up costs $80.00 a month and dumpster will hold a weeks worth of trash for a typical household. They pick up one time a week. They use to pick up an extra day for an extra charge but don't do that anymore because of high gas prices. We can put just about anything in the dumpster. It is recycled at the dump ground. We can haul our own to the dump ground for a charge but it has to be tarped down to haul.

We have areas around that have large containers for recycling and also a large trash compactor for household trash. Other things--broken lawn furniture or stuff like that has to be taken to the dump. Hope we don't have anything big break!!!

Rural municipality has a private contractor, that come from the landfill a couple of miles away that was recently sold to Toronto.

Pickup of garbage and recyclables (metal, glass [which please box and label], cardboard, paper, all in same tub) every Wednesday.

We need to put labels on each garbage bag, available from various local outlets at $1.75 per label.

I've sent out some recyclables, but no garbage so far ... need to buy some labels and get some of the eligible stuff out of here (but there isn't very much).

As I said elsewhere ... landlord does a burn, occasionally, after checking with fire dept., which cuts down on some. Plus he has a wood stove in his shop, and I have one in the rec. room (later addition, not served by furnace).

We need to clean up our air and water ... or have no grandkids.

We have garbage pick up once a week, for which we pay. Recycling items are picked up once a month, but we now have bins, located only about a block from me, so that is great. We also have a "dump" for leaves, grass, etc. We also have a place to take old building wood, etc., but SIL takes it and I don't even know where it is!

Pay to have it picked up every Friday, They don't do recycling so every other Saturday we take our tuff to the recycling center.

Our town picks up the trash once a week. They take just about anything except appliances. You can take those to the dump, no charge. Recyclables are picked up every other week. Yard waste you have to haul down to the dump yourself, no cost there. They hold a hazardous waste removal day in our town. You have to call and make a reservation. I forget how much it costs. A nominal fee. They take things like car oil, house paints, spray cans, anti-freeze, etc. Car tires will cost you $1.00 to dump. NancyLouise

No recycling here, sad to say. Except taking papers and boxes etc to the Job Corp. But last time I did , they had not even emptied their bins. Old blankets and newspapers (in bags) to the animal shelter, but again they beg, but won't empty their bins or clean up where they say to put stuff.
We bought a small dumpster so everything goes into it--wood scraps, metal, garage etc and it is part of the water bill.

Trash pickup is paid for by my property taxes.

Trash pickup is on Monday and Thursday.

Paper products pickup is every other Wednesday.

Recyclables (glass and plastics) is every other Wednesday.

We pay a private company to pick up our trash.. it costs us about $30. a month for once a week pickup. No recycling unless we do it ourselves.. there is a paper recyling bin at the school and plastic bag bins at Walmart. If we want to recycle glass or other plastics besides bags we have to drive 20 minutes to another town. We used to have a recycling center in our town, but not anymore. :-(

We take our trash to the dump. We are outside town limits, so no service is available, unless we contract with private guys. We don't bother with that because we would have to take it to the end of the drive--on their schedule. It's less hassle to just take it ourselves--it's only 5 minutes to the dump and we can take it whenever it's convenient for us.

Garbage twice a week. Yard waste once/week. Special BIG pick-up each spring when they take most anything that's not toxic.

The charge is on the City's Utility bill along with the water.

We have pick up once a week. We pay it thru the city, along with water, sewer and storm drain maintainence, and street sweeping.
We have 3 96 gallon containers for trash, green, and recyclables.
We can get big items picked up 3 times a year for free.
Can't believe some of you don't have to pay!!! LOL!!

Like Lydia, we paid $30 a month for once a week pick-up. No recycle. That was too high for what we got, IMO, so we cancelled that. We recycle everything we can, take it to town when we are heading that way and about once a month we take a big bag of garbage to the trash compactor in another city, where we pay $2-$3 for the bag, depending on size, who is working and which one of us takes it in, they like me best! lolol I always pay $2 AND the guy lifts it out of the back for me! lol

So we're saving about $330 a year. I really like that.

We pay thru town taxes. Used to be a private carter. We get two general trash pickups a qweek, and one recycling. Alternate weeks-paper and cardboard, then glass and metal. To dispose of large items, appliances, mattresees, you call the town and they pick up.

We pay and it is picked up once a week. It is a private company that goes through the county. We also have a recycle can and a garden waste can. Any big items, you have to haul yourself to the dump. No free pickups. I hate it when I have to take all 3 big cans down the long 40 yard driveway!

We have a very unusual PITA garbage situation in my town. The town burns garbage at a resource recovery plant to help produce electricity for the city. We have our choice of 2 or 3 garbage companies. Newspapers go in the garbage because they burn well. No glass is allowed because it messes up the burner. No yard waste is allowed in the garbage. No recycling pick up. This means I have to separate all glass and anything I want to get a deposit back on from my garbage. The glass is to be taken to bins at the grocery store as are the deposit items. Yard waste sits around and piles up in my backyard for the one weekend each spring and fall that there is free yard waste disposal if you bring it to them. I pay $18 a month for garbage pickup, still have to pay the city a lot of money for my electricity and have all this other stuff to be taken here and there.
In CA my pickup cost $24 for 3 months and all recycling was picked up weekly in one container separate from my garbage.

We go to the dump. We could get a private hauler but the dump works for us. We get a dump sticker at Town Hall that is good for a year and costs $85. We can dump as much as we need to...no limit. My husband puts the cans in the back of the pickup and off he goes. He meets lots of nice people, all dumping their garbage. We also recycle glass, newspaper, cans, boxes. We have haz-mat weekends 4 times a year. It's a good system.

We have a few sources to pick from and they all charge. The one we use comes once a week...They back their little truck down our driveway and empty the containers...and they take most everything...This week there was an old screen, a broken plastic chair and a non working fan sitting by the containers...they took it all...They charge a little more then the other companies but it's worth it not to have to pull those containers out to the street!!

We pay a private company to come once a week. They'll take just about anything but they don't recycle. There are bins for recycling just outside of town for us to bring our recyclables. We can dump yard waste a few blocks away. The builder who built this neighborhood has a dump area there that he lets everyone in the neighborhood use for yard waste.

About once a year, the township has a clean-up day for bigger stuff. The county does this once a year too. You pay to dispose of some things like tires.
