I am not sure..I thought they made their nest of spider webs, but it does look like one. Maybe you could post it over at hummingbird garden. They have a host of people over there that always answer my questions.

RonM...I'm afraid your nest isn't a Hummingbird nest but more likely a small sparrow nest...perhaps a Chipping Sparrow or other small sparrow. Heres a pic I found on FlickR of a Hummingbird nest with a mans thumb for size comparison. Your nest is loosely "woven" where the Hummingbirds nest is tightly woven and more "together" (they use spider webs to make it stay together better).

The one I have (blew down during a storm, many years ago) looks like the one IndianaKat posted, only it has many bits of lichen all over the outside.

The spider web usage also allows the nest to expand as the babies need more room, they are wonders to behold! We found an egg under a feeder one day- about the size of a jellybelly jellybean, broken. We let the ants clean it up and it stayed glued to the rail all summer long. It was a great topic of conversation.

Can't tell scale that well, but it looks a little too big.

The one I found last year looks like IndianaKats pic.I never knew they used spider webs to build them.I couldn't figure out what that stuff was holding them together but now I know!LOL the inside of the one I found had tiny little soft feathers in it.It had 3 eggs and we watched them hatch,grow and fly away.Those little birds just fascinate me.LOL

Thanks for all the help. It is not a hummers nest may be a nuthatch or sparrow. There are lots of both around here. Will let you know what the bird watching forum has to say.

I soooo want to look in my azaleas on the north side of my house that is where I see my hummers come and go to the feeder all the time but I don't want to scare them....and then in the fall when stuff is bare I forget...someone remind me LOL Stacy
