Porceline tiles for outdoors

I'm trying to come up with an idea for a patio surface. I currently have an old cement patio. We were thinking of replacing it with bricks, but I hate how the weekds grow through. Someone suggested porceline tiles, but I'm not sure if they would stain, or how they would hold up? Does anybody have these tiles outside or know anyone who has them? I want to know of any good or bad experience with them.

Porcelain could be too slippery. You'd have to watch for that.

Porcelain can be used outside and usually they are more durable than ceramic. You need to verify that they are rated for outside. They come in a variety of finishes from shiny to matte and from smooth to heavily textured.

It would be helpful to go to a tile store and talk to the sales staff about the specifics of your installation.

I had a terrible problem with soap scum on my acrylic tub and surround. I finally found a product called Zap! which is sold on TV and over the internet. Mine came in a kit with non-metallic scrubbers. It did a terrific job dissolving the scum with a little scrubbing. I also read on this forum that it is the stabilizers in soap bars that, when dissolved, cause the scum. I gave up soap in favor of body wash gels in a variety of flavors and get very little scum. Both are fine. Porcelain is stronger, but this isn't a big issue since either one will last longer than anything else in your home if it's properly laid. That said, most of the tile I'm really drawn to is porcelain... And if you are doing a pattern that will require a lot of custom cutting, a solid body porcelain is way the best since the color goes all the way through instead of just being on the very top.

Yep, we have a tiled patio, and we love it. The tile is about 7 or 8 years old and still looks great. We power wash it once a year or so to get some of the residual dirt off, and after that it looks brand new again. Everyone who comes to our house comments on how great it looks. Our patio is about 14' x 35'. I believe it is ceramic tile, but I'm not sure. My only complaint is that it can be a little bit slippery for our young son, but that hasn't been too big of deal. I would certainly do it again. No photos on this PC (sorry!) but I'll try to upload one.

Porcelin Arabesque tile or white glass subway tile pics?

Bee and a few others here have done beveled porcelain arabesque tile from Mission Stone and Tile. I placed an order for the same tile for my sister's house last month (40 feet of it!) and it was on-sale at the time so it made for an even better deal. I love the look of it and can't wait to see it installed. Have you thought about pavers? They are bricks, only thinner. Our porch and walk are made of them and I really like the look. We want to add a patio for the grill next summer and I think I'd like them for that, too. Plus, they could go right on top of your concrete patio.

I think the tile would be slick, like socks said. Also the grout would probably mildew badly. Is the area covered? That may help in your decision.
