night blooms by day + (photo heavy)

Here are the daylight pics of the Cereus remember I warned you they are ugly! Also got a few of the flat non prickly cactus under another palm.

It has a few buds on it. I'll try to get photos

of them too.

1. the base the little white fuzzy things are the buds. As they grow they start to get pointy, frilly and red in color.

2. up the trunk

3 a different angle a little further up the trunk

4.5.6.7.these are pics of another night bloomer, without pricklies all over, just one or 2 per joint and not so small.

It is hard to see under the fronds but I have one bud opening tonight and one probably tomorrow night.

there is the opening bud on this one

this show the bud maybe opening a few nights from now

last one with bloom starting to open

Most of the inner petals of a night bloomer are brilliant white and bright yellows to attract the bugs for pollination I would assume.

The outer petals have been many many shades of oranges reds greens and yellow I've only seen one very rare purple and one blue.

I am not an expert, I just know what I like!

ENJOY Ya'll

Most unusual, and pretty in its own way.

Oh my, Marie! You have so much still in bloom, and lots of other beauties, including Phoebe, the water, and the barn. I like this windy pics too. The row of silver maples almost give me a feel of the wind. :-) As I have said before, you have many plants that I have never tried, and that probably would not do well here. Does the Crocosmia survive in the ground? I tried some, and they never returned. What are the purple leaves in front of the Tigereye Sumac? It looks familiar. Our native sumac are the winged and the smooth. Thank you for the day at your farm. Marian

Hi all! It's so nice to be back and have a bit of time! Ryan, Liza, I called the tulips, Easter tulips, because they were purchased for the table for Easter! I really have no idea what the variety is, sorry for the confusion. Ryan, I'm just getting back into Orchids, I had to leave a large amount of them in NJ with the woman I sold the house too, our home up here is just kept to cold. In NJ I had a conservatory added to the top floor of the house and it was a great place for orchids, bannanas, and other tropicals. I'm trying phals again this year but think the sun/plant room may be too cold and don't know where I'll move them too, maybe my home office. The cattleya, dendrobium, and some other hardier varieties do fine with some drops into the upper 30's but the phals really suffer. Liza, I battle with squirrels here when it comes to tulips, the little buggers like to behead them and leave the flower at the base of the plant. Alana, I spent many hours annoyed that the Zombie could look wistfully out the window and I couldn't! LOL Cindeea my dear!!!! that phaius orchid was huge, the spike was almost 28 inches tall! the leaves are just as tall but spread. It's a ground orchid so you probably could grow it where you are! Logees sells them.

Does Anacampseros Minitura bloom during the day or night?
Q
Comments (5)
Anacampseros have day time flowers with 1-5 flowers per stem, they will open maybe only one at a time, but do not stay open more than a day. Give it time and plenty of light for it to open. It will know what to do.

Hi Newbie, no you're not in the wrong forum there are fabulous examples of what you are looking for if you haven't already seen them but there is also a place for close-ups as well, not only are they beautiful to look at but it can be a help in choosing which particular variety of a flower to buy. I think if you do a search for gottagarden's red bed, libbyshome's cottage garden, wonbyherwit's and steveningen's gardens to name a few you'll find the overall view you're looking for. I could go on forever about the absolutely beautiful gardens in this forum but I'd be typing all night. So you see there is room for both close-ups and overall views. Myself I enjoy both immensely. All you have to do if you have a question about sun exposure and which plant will do best in a certain situation is ask, what works in one zone doesn't in another. For instance take some of Haxuan's beautiful flowers if I was to plant them in my garden the poor things would probably croak as her climate is so very different to mine :o). Hope this is of some help. Annette

I'm guessing that's a palm tree they are climbing on. Do you have to attach them or do they attach themselves? Kinda like ivy would?

I accidentally stumbled across a website yesterday that explained how to start Mountain Laurel from seed. I've been trying to do that since we built the house next to three ML's years ago. So, I'm in the middle of seeing if I can follow instructions and get some to germinate this time.

It's a shame your cacti only blooms at night. Not nearly enough time to enjoy them.

Very interesting. I think both plants are in same family. I have the ones with the flat stems but some will get 3 or 4 sided. They bloom white, dark red, orange, coral, & light pink. Epiphyllum is what they are called & those bloom during the day, altho I think GF said her white one blooms at night & smells great. Mine doesn't have any smell that I can tell! The colored ones close up at night. Jan

coloredthumb,
I wonder if anyone riding by your house thought there were a bunch of pink flamingos' nesting in your tree? Sleeping in the daytime...That is what it looks like to me. LOL I think that is the most gorgeous picture at night, and I can't help but laugh my head off at your flamingos during the day...that is a hoot!! Reminds me of the of the ugly ducklings turning into the beautiful swans story...(;-)

If only they would go from sleeping flamingos to beautiful blooms again! Blooms only one night So fleeting a time for such beauty.
Sleeping Flamingos tuck their heads under their wings with their neck wound around and stand on one leg. Crazy birds make it look easy too! LOL

It looks like snakes running up the tree. Beautiful blooms, the the plant itself gives me the creeps. Thanks for sharing.

My mom had one like (or very similar to) your second variety with the flat leaves, when I was a child. I think she got it from my great grandmother. Mom had it for years & years before it ever bloomed. And OMG how excited she was. All the neighbors had to come over to look & oogle. It bloomed several times & quite prolifically after that first time when there were only 1 or 2 blossoms. I remember the fragrance was quite heavy and it had such a beautiful flower.

The plant itself was rather ugly, large & unwieldy, having to be moved out/indoors with the changing seasons. None of us children was interested in taking it when my mom moved out of the house after dad died. So it was tossed.

Your picture brought back good memories of my childhood. Thanks!

beeohio, I'm glad the pics brought you good memories.

pris they attach to the tree (and it is a cabbage palm) with these little root looking things all by themselves DH does guide the ones turned away from the tree back toward it and they attach on their own. The plant isn't a parasite it grows from roots in the ground and hasn't harmed the trees any in all the years I've seen them growing.
