Have to tell you, I saw a lot of OLD people, now I feel old!

55th class reunion

Of course, we looked at the name tag, then at the face, cause we sure have changed. Some more so than others. I felt pretty good about myself, as I don't have aches and pains YET!

T'was nice, I'd say 150 tops.

Funny thing, is that it was supposed to be from 5-11, and by EIGHT O'CLOCK most everyone was leaving, including me and my two friends.

No single male classmates were in attendance, but plenty single female, widows or divorcees, fellow male married classmates, some came without their spouses.

Friend, that I was staying in motel room with, we sat at the pool at the motel, with our wine and chatted until the pool closed at 11.

Got up fairly early, and went to the other friend's beautiful home, who had prepared for us 3 a delicious brunch, including scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, homemade biscuits, and bacon.

We chatted non-stop for over three hours, and then Amanda and I left and went our separate ways.

T'was nice, glad I went, but think that's the only one I will attend.

Yeah, it's possible. We had a 95 year old admitted to our ICU with a broken leg ... he was hitching a halfbroke mule to a plow and it ran him down. I went in to get lab work, and the guy in that ICU space sure didn't look 95 to me. I'd have thought he was early 60s at the latest. The muscle testing and bone density scans put him at the average for men in their early 30s, and WAY ahead of almost anyone over 40. On testing, mnay of his children were well above average for their age groups (he had children scattered from 30s to 70s ... he had been quite a womanizer in his youth, and had buried a couple of wives). He drank in moderation, smoked an occasional pipe of home-grown tobacco, had a diet that would have killed a less active person (pure Southern salt and cholestreol), but he also had a great family, a doting wife in her mid 60s (they married when he was in his 50s and she in her 20s), farmed his own little farm, went to church weekly ... and was a vrey physically active person. He had just never slowe down because he thought he had to.

From old home to new - or new to old? What does it feel like?

I love old houses - the quality, the history (I was THRILLED when I saw the names of the owners of our then under 5 year old house on the 1930 census), and the style. If I don't win the lottery, I will never live in another "new" build (80's and up) because the vast majority of non custom built homes are just not up to my standards. Of the 4 new builds I lived in in my life, only two were decent. The last decent one had been built by a guy who had previously done commercial building. It was built to last and I have no doubt that one would still stand after a tornado. Because of the commercial background, the finish "prettyness" wasn't there, but those details were added later, by us. The last new build was a nightmare. The "quality" semi custom build was so lacking that I can't even imagine how much worse some of the mass produced really poor quality houses will last. Within the first 5 years the deck was partially rotting (no flashing between the house and it), the roof leaked at the chimney, many of the windows wouldn't work well and/or leaked at the top, lots of the trim wood was rotting out and the floors of both 1st and 2nd floor creaked in almost every spot as did the entire staircase. And then of course you had the "minor" issues like one couldn't use a hairdryer in the master bath before resetting the outlet in the upstairs bath if someone had used a hairdryer in it before the master bath. And the defective shingles requiring a complete reroof at 3 years is hard to forget. My brother has a friend who last year moved into a house in one of those new mass built neighbourhoods in South Carolina. Brand new. 6 months after moving in, a water pipe junction burst (iirc, they thought it hadn't been correctly connected or something) in the attic while they were on vacation and ruined most of the house and their items. The builder denied responsibility and the insurance company was blaming it on the builder since the house was still under "warranty" and it was turning into a huge mess, to say the least. New does not equal free of work and I'd rather strip wallpaper than deal with finding out what corners were cut.

What you all need is an Ott light,or a replica of one.The light from them is brighter and a true light if you know what i mean.I also use a mag eyes magnifying glass like this. http://www.amazon.com/MagEyes-Plus-Magnifier-BiFocal-lenses/dp/B0001DU9TI I've had mine for years.I also had the one that hangs around your neck,but didn't like that one. Well there is a lot that babies and the antique have in common...no hair, no teeth, wear diapers... :) Talk about adults dressing like babies, did you see Dencia at the Grammys? Including the sequined drop drawers? Ridiculous. Loonlake, just for you, here's me on the way to the library today. Actually, after my Mom died (age 81), I went through her closets and took a bunch of her clothes. It was fortunate we were the same size. I was still working at the time and whenever I wore her stuff, I got compliments...when I wore my own, silence. What can I say? She was hipper than I! Of course, she got carded when she went to apply for the golden age pass in bowling...you had to be 80 to get it and they didn't believe she was! Cindymac, the colors in the jacket are pretty. I think what would make the difference between "blair" or "alfred dunner" and not is the presence/lack of a waistline. If it were mine, I'd probably take in the side seams in some way in the waist area to give me a little more shape. Here are some before and after tailoring for men...same applies for women. Vermont Country Store is another place to find styles untouched by time.

One person walked to to my table, and he leaned over to look at my nametag, and I quickly covered it up, just to tease.

He replied that that wasn't fair.

I know exactly how you feel. I felt the same way at my 35th. It was fun. I'm glad I went. Don't really care if I go to another. I'm glad you went. You had fun with your friends and it was quite a surprise to see everyone else and try to figure out who they were.

Glad you had fun, Glenda. Was reading the local obits from back home and found out one of my classmates died in February. Didn't know her except by name, she was only 50. Very sad.

I remember going to my 20th reunion. It was sort of sad because the afternoon party was held at what had been my grandparents/parents farm until the year before. All us kids just loved going to the farm.

But nobody recognized anyone at that one either. Everyone had gathered at what had been the pig lot where the barn was, but now it was all green (wonder why :-0) and mowed into a nice lawn. In the backyard, there was a '61 Chevy convertible. A centerpiece, I'd guess.

But when I walked back to where everyone was gathered, let me tell you it was awkward. The "walk" was a good city block and, of course, everyone turned to see who the new people were coming up that long, long walk. When I finally got up there I recognized some of the girls but I also heard one of them say, "She must be someone's wife, because she's too young to be in our class."

Well, need I say, the rest of THAT reunion was just wonderful :0 Sadly, that never happened again!! Fact is, we do get older. We just don't realize it until we see friends we haven't seen for a while.

Nice of your friend to have the brunch. Isn't it just like you just saw each other yesterday when you gather like that?

So, was the old boyfriend there? Did you recognize him?

On Flag Day, which makes the date easy to remember, it was 66 years since I graduated from high school. Via e-mail I reminded three of my classmates of that, I should say 4 as one was a couple from my homeroom who have been married since he graduated from college, so I suppose 62 years of marriage.

Glenda, I'm so glad that you had fun at your
reunion! Stan and I went to my 25th and we had
a ball. We sat with a big group of my girlfriends
and their husbands and the fellows all got along
so well that you would have thought that it was
their reunion! My 40th is in two years and I'm
planning on being there.

I always think about the speech that Suzanne
Sugarbaker(on Designing Woman)gave at her 15th
class reunion...this little bit is from just about
the end of the speech, I always think about it
when thinking about going to class reunions...

"Because when I look around this room tonight, I don't see receding hairlines and the beginnings of pot-bellies and crow's feet. I just see all the beautiful faces of old girlfriends and sweet young boys who used to stand on my front porch and try to kiss me goodnight. And you can remember me any way you'd like, but that's how I'll always remember you."

I think it was our 15th reunion where we photocopied the 'senior' pictures and glued them to the name tags... boy did that help!!

He didn't come, like the other single male classmates. He lives in Madrid Spain, so suppose it was too far for a few hours, eh!

Just glad it's over and my only wish, is that I had attended the 40th, before we all changed in looks so dramatically.

ADVICE: don't wait until your 55th class reunion to go to one.

Probably by 8:00 most were having a hard time keeping their eyes open. You know OLD people go to bed early!
Also, most probably couldn't see to drive after dark!

Yes, indeed, it is hard to get old. I know because I am!

P.S. Gotta laugh at ourselves, don't we?
