Canada Day and July 4th Weekend

Our holidays fall on the same weekend this year. Our Canada Day is always the first of July, no matter the day it falls on. So our holiday is Friday and yours is Monday.

What are you all having? I love the way the U.S. celebrates!

Several years ago we were in Canada on Canada Day, and found out that most of the stores, including Walmart were closed, but it was really a fun day. We were invited to bar b ques by people we did not even know, but could not go because sister in law got upset. She wanted to go to Walmart--I just enjoyed the day and the people.

LOL Marie, I guess that's her "outing" Walmart!!
All the retail stores and businesses are closed Canada Day.

I'm here now. Had lunch with some friends and then had the little GD all afternoon. DS is flying off for work the afternoon of the 4th, so they don't want to do anything. Guess DH and I will just do our own thing--if it is too hot, we might slip off to an afternoon movie and then watch the fireworks from the yard. We can usually see the ones from the baseball stadium (actually went there last year to watch) and from the college. Haven't heard of any celebrations this weekend, but then I wasn't looking for any. And I am not in a resort type area like you are Kathleen--all that would be over at the beach or around Disneyland and the other amusement parks. Karen, I sure would not want to be out in the heat either--you can stay in the air conditioned house and be comfortable. Kay

My 4th of July weekend project

Oh yeah, we moved everything out of the room about 2 weeks ago then pulled up the carpet, baseboards, dust bunnies, dog & cat hair, etc. and scrubbed the room clean. I've had everything from that room stacked up in the dining room for two weeks. It was a mess, but that's just part of the process. Now I'll start the same process on the sewing room, but taking everything out of there is much more daunting! It really does look like an episode of Hoarders in there because it's my sewing and crafting stuff, leftover stuff from when my mother lived with us, a couple hundred books, and the catch-all for everything non-Florida people would put in their basement. It's scary but it needs to be done.

Anyone's feelings for "The country" and any patriotism about it should be unaffected by the doings or positions of any temporary politician/office holder. The country is diverse and is the same from year to year, no matter who's in office and no matter what the government does or doesn't do. If you love the country, you should also respect the diversity of views (without needing to agree with them). That's a concept many don't understand or want to deal with. The frequency of Americans' overt expressions of patriotism, along with the same of overt religiousity, are two things about the US that many Europeans find puzzling. Most people around the world (other than political dissidents, and often even them) have affection and pride for their countries, they just don't feel the need to express them publicly or as frequently as Americans do. The flag represents everyone and every point of view, not just one's particularly favorite position.

I wish I had gone there while I lived in the Denver area. I spent a lot of time exploring great places and towns. Of course Manitou Springs has been one of our favorite places. When people would come from out of the state to visit I always took them there. Going in the mines was very scary for me. I would have enjoyed this experience. Thanks for the window into your time there.

They usually have a great cross-border celebration in Windsor and Detroit.

Canada is a great place to be in July!!!

At my place, I'll be alone. I'm shipping my wife out East to visit our daughter and 2 yr old granddaughter. She'll stay a week and baby sit while daughter works. Dsughter's day care service shuts down that week. We have some other travel plans later - Wedding, genealogy, reunion, sight-seeing, visiting relatives.

I said I'd be alone. That's not entirely true. This evening, I was invited to a barbecue and potluck by a friend in our town. Later that evening, we'll got to the local park to view fireworks. Our little village's fireworks do not rival those in Milwaukee, but these are plenty to satisfy me and its a pretty good show plus its within walking distance of my house. (My wife will have set the video recorder to record the Milwaukee fireworks.) Before the party, I may sling my camera over my shoulder and take a bicycle ride on the local trail.

Was going to have some out of town friends over but work schedules changed so no set plans yet. Could still be a busy weekend as you can see.

July 2 is . . . . . Visitation Of The Virgin Mary Day, I Forgot Day and World UFO Day

July 3 is . . . . . Disobedience Day, Stay out of the Sun Day, Build A Scarecrow Day and Compliment Your Mirror Day

July 4 is . . . . . Independence Day (U.S.), National Country Music Day, Sidewalk Egg Frying Day and Tom Sawyer Fence-Painting Day

Or I might stop and see my cousin, whether he's out of the hospital then or not.
