I thought my DH was to only ladder addicted person.....we have an extension ladder he bought when we painted the house.
Not as big as your DH's but I won't tell him that.
He will be 78 in a week and wants to paint the house again.
He has essential tremors and is not very steady on his feet....hope he forgets about it!
I am glad your DH got what he wanted for his birthday.

Oh, he should stake out the interstates around Atlanta- there is at least one ladder a week lost during rush hour. Friend ran over one with her new Volvo a couple of years ago. She was not hurt but the car was and she was fit to be tied!

Please make him use climbing straps - we don't need another tragedy here on KT!

That is funny! I had a couple tall scaffolding ladders on Craigslist a few months ago... my hubby couldn't wait to get rid of them. Thankfully, he doesn't collect ladders. hehe..

Well now, before you laugh too hard there, have you checked on what it would cost to have that tree done professionally? ka-CHING!

What a good laugh. Now, I ask, where in heck does he store all those ladders?

Holy cow - that is a big ladder! Our silo's are 70' high - and that is a long way up. I HATE to climb up those things - and those ladders have a safety cage around them!!!

LOL! There are ladders everywhere. Step-ladders in the basement, a couple in the attic over the garage, and a few in the garage proper. Then there's what was originally a lathe house which was supposed to be a shade garden but gradually it transformed into a storage area for generators and ladders hanging off the walls. He has a couple of six-foot stepladders way in the back yard (we have close to two acres) in case he needs them for whatever reason. And then there's the giant lean-to behind the garage that has ladders here and there hanging from it. They're everywhere, I tell ya!

The last ladder he HAD to have was a 40-ft one to paint the house a couple years ago. And yes, he has plenty of straps to hook onto everything for safety.

BTW ... my husband is the youngest 69-year-old you will ever meet! He still climbs trees, has taken down close to 100 in the past five years that the nasty pine beetle killed. We certainly couldn't have afforded to have it done professionally. He's teaching my son now, they've done three trees here so far, five more are needing to come down just in the front. Plus he's been helping neighbors who had tree damage (two were uprooted) from high winds last week.

They say the difference between men and boys is the size of their ~~~ toys (or perhaps ladders)....lol

Woody rented a ladder like that once, to cut a tree with. It wasn't even that big, maybe a 45 footer- it was so heavy, even between the two of us it was a real feat to get it up and in position. If Mr. Stoney actually goes to use it, he'll need a few friends to help him and keep him from getting a hernia.

Ladders are expensive! Woody got a fiberglass 8 or 10 foot step ladder and I was shocked at the price. He loves it, though, it's so stable compared to his old wooden one.

We just paid $650 to have an oak tree cut down. NOT cut up, just down. They had to use a bucket truck to do it, it was so big. Woody's doing all the clean up and splitting himself and some of those chunks of wood weigh more than he does, the trunk was about 30" across. Apparently it had reached its lifespan and died, it didn't have any rot at all. It just died.

carol, please don't let your husband up on a ladder! My FIL denied he had tremors from Parkinsons for YEARS (we're past that now). My own dad, who just came to visit, is finally using a cane to walk. He somehow blames the unsteadiness on his feet to his eyesight (sigh) and he darn near took a tumble at my brother's house. I guess it's part of getting old, the denial. My brother fell off a ladder at work two years ago and spent 12 days between intensive care and trauma (the worst thing was he punctured his lung). Now as a fairly young guy who never smoked he has had part of his lung removed and is restricted from the sports he loves.

I'm glad he's happy with it. I'm pleased to see Craigslist worked for someone. I've had no luck with it.

LOL I've heard of lots of collections, but never a ladder collection. That's too funny.

Flamey, he had trouble with the 40-ft ladder putting it up by himself (I am worthless). This one, there's no way in the world he could do it, so I won't have to worry about him getting up that high when I'm not home. DS will *have* to be there to help.

I think we are holding at 5 ladders for now, but I'll keep an eye on this.

I've got a 28ft extension ladder (28 ft when collasped) and it is all that I can handle. I could not lauch a larger ladder! I use it to service my 2-story house. For everything else outside, I use an 8 ft, fiber glass, step ladder. The 8 ft ladder is a little large to use inside, so I kept a very old 6 ft wooden step ladder from the first house that we owned. In the not too distant future, I should dispose of the wood ladder for safety's sake. suspect that its load rating is about 2/3 of what it once was.

I am a guy, and yes, you can have too many ladders. You have too many when you run out of storage space. Build a shed or barn and you can have more ladders. (It requires more ladders build a barn, you see.)

I'm going to print this and send it to the MIL. She thinks it's shamefull that DH has more then one hammer and more than one drill.

Our realtor gave us a Lowe's gift card when we closed on the house. DH promptly bought one of those "Little Giant" ladders. He loves it, and so do the neighbors! LOL

I could tell you more stories about DH, but I won't ... suffice it to say that ... A) he was one of 12 children growing up in the 40's and ... B) followed by years in the Army where he was limited on how much 'stuff' he could move from post to post (and he had four kids so there was lots of kidstuff).

I do believe it is his goal to fill these two acres with stuff. Multiples of stuff.

As a person who loves "stuff"....I'm glad your husband got the ladder. That is certainly an impressive size!

Does he have one of those Little Giant ladders that you can assemble in all sorts of positions????? Too bad we don't have little nicknames under our names like on other sites. You could be Laddermanswife LOL! We sure would have interesting names.

lisa, he has two of them. He puts them in the M position and lays a 20-ft section from an extension ladder scross them, then puts plywood or something over that to serve as a scaffold when he needs to get up a little higher.

It isn't just ladders ... it's all kinds of tools.
