? about stuffed bell peppers

I am tired of the same recipe for stuffed bell peppers. Just wondering if this would be good to stuff them with. What do you think?

BAKED BEANS AND GROUND BEEF

1 (18 oz.) can B & M baked beans

1 lb. ground beef

3 tbsp. celery

3 tbsp. onion

3 tbsp. brown sugar

2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

1/2 bottle ketchup

Saute onion and celery in bacon grease. Brown meat in bacon greased. Mix with brown sugar, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce

Doesn't sound all that appetizing to me. A lot of beef, a lot of beans and a lot of ketchup with a bit of other things thrown in.
I like to stuff ours with a mixture of chopped tomatoes, orzo, Italian sausage and a bit of garlic and basil.

I'd drain the beans...leave out the celery, cut back on the ketchup, add a little mustard, and throw the bacon from the bacon grease in...

whatever you do,let us know how it turns out.

Green bells are immature. They turn colors when ripe, the color depending on which variety you are growing. Most turn red. Others are just about rainbow colored, ranging from red to yellow to somewhat purple to almost black. It takes time and patience and a careful watch for insects and diseases to get to the colored stage. (I don't know of any that stay green through maturity but there may be some that do.) I would just recommend try different plants and see what you prefer. Some are called "frying peppers" and for "pickling" for a reason, depends on what you want. For bells I like "Golden Summer", very large plants that have light green peppers that are good tasting even before they ripen beautifully. "Flavorburst" is somewhat similar, with light green unripe peppers that are good also. "Big Bertha" is a very nice hybrid to red bell. "Corno di Toro" and "Carmen" are excellent bull horn peppers, sweet peppers at their best. "Giant Marconi" is a very nice long pepper, Burpee's "Big Daddy" is a vigorous ripen to yellow Marconi type pepper.

I've done quite a few 'experiments' with saved pepper seed, one of which gave me a pepper that I've got in my kitchen @about 2.5-3ft it give me a regular chilli supply for my cooking, another is more of a novelty tree with tiny little chillies and leaves, it looks like a thai variant. Another however although very very prolific (and bare in mind I only use small containers 7inch max if that) wasn't hot at all and although I do have 2nd gen seed I haven't pursued that lineage at all (yet). You will get a mixed bag, but most will germinate, some will stumble through and then die, and you may get some good ones you like, or you could get a load of weak, poor fruiting, loosers :) As to wether the green ones will germinate, they probably will if the seed itself is properly formed. My advice with the random seed is grow as many as you can, be patient and label them all (even if its just a letter) so if you get an unusual one you know which one it is. And if you get any someone else will be interested in, then share them with your friends :) Regards Nick

The bells are suffering from blossom end rot, caused by uneven watering or too much water. Search the FAQ forum for more information. A word about pots: How big are they? If they are less than 5-gallon containers you will have a hard time growing anything substantial. There will be too little soil to energize the plants, and they will dry out too quickly. If you are serious about growing things you must start with containers of at least 5 gallons. Bigger if you can find them or buy them. Then you have to fill them with good soil. "Pots" are okay for an herb or two, but not if you want stuffing peppers.

I've used barley, as well as wild rice, and like them both. For a great stuffed pepper recipe, to to allrecipes.com and search for N'Awlins Stuffed Bell Peppers." They are fantastic.

Sounds like a Sloppy Joe mix. If you like Sloppy Joes, then I think you'd like this combo.

My favorite is a Spanish Rice type mixture, with rice, hamburger, tomato, and seasonings.

I stuff mine with ground beef, rice, onion, egg to bind it and then our a can or two of pizza sauce over them. YUMMY.

I think that combo is too heavy for stuffed peppers, but it will be a lovely side dish with BBQ ribs this weekend. In fact, that's how I make my BBQ beans, minus the ground beef.

I will second the recipes that call for some rice or bread crumbs or other grain as a base.

I might add diced bell pepper to the rest of the recipe but i wouldn't stuff peppers with it. Too gloppy, too heavy, too everything.

Rice and meat for stuffed peppers is delicious. I say don't fix what ain't broke. Classic dishes are classic for a reason.

I don't know why most think your idea is all that odd...all you're doing is making a version of Calico beans and stuffing them inside a serving dish of a pepper.

You can serve many things in peppers...you don't have to stick with the usual stuffed pepper recipe. And, Calico beans aren't that weird... they're usually just spruced up canned beans with ground beef and bacon.

I was looking for a recipe for calico beans and came across this... got good reviews...it may help perfect yours...
