Bengal Tiger and 2 Camels found safe....

I posted this early this morning, when GW was acting up.

The other day I posted about someone stealing a pick-up and trailer last week which had a Bengal tiger and 2 camels in.

This was done last week, when they were heading home from out of province.

Everyone was worried for their safety, not being watered in the heat.

They were found safe and sound, in the trailer, and healthy. They are now at home in their zoo. I'm so relieved. I was really worried, thinking they would have been found dead.

I'm so glad that the animals were found safe and healthy. However, I wonder about the zoo that transports animals in a trailer pulled by a pick-up truck. When the Waco zoo transports a large animal, it is in a special enclosed trailer, air conditioned or heated as needed, pulled by a semi and accompanied by at least two zookeepers, usually three. One of the zookeepers stays with the animal at its new home until it is settled in and its new keepers are familiar with any personality traits it has.

garry, 'Silver Swan' (also 'Tasmanian Tiger' and 'Glacier Blue') are all variegated forms of E. characias and therefore quite a bit less hardy than any hybrids like 'Helena's Blush' or x martinii. The variegation also tends to reduce hardiness and offers limitations on vigor as well - E. characias in my climate tends to be a BIG, robust, freely seeding plant that takes extremes of winter in stride. Not so for any of the variegated forms.

Thank you everyone for getting back to me so quickly. Kelly, you were right, the net I was using wasn't fine enough. It was bird netting used to keep them off fruit trees, with smallish holes between the squares. I bought the 5 gallon paint strainer runmede suggested. Yesterday when I woke up there were only 8 cats left. I moved them, pot, plant stand, and all to my garden, since they were out of food. My garden is completely organic, so they should be safe. I placed the stand next to a bronze fennel plant, pulled the top of the plant over to the stems of parsley plant they were on. I also put some sticks in the pot, pulled a branch of a nearby rose over, and bagged allof them in safely. When I checked later, 2 of them had crawled down the fennel plant, out the small gap between pot and net. Not to much later they were gone, hopefully to find other food. This morning, all 6 remaining cats are safe in their new home, and I saw one taking a huge, runny poop, which if I understand correctly, means they are getting ready to pupate. If anyone has any further advice for me, I would appreciate it. Thank you again for all the advice, and I'll post all further happenings!

Happy to see people checking in and okay. Hurricanes are so scary, especially with all of the flooding in your area. I was at a public golf course today, here in Louisville, to videotape a PGA golf clinic. Ike's winds came rushing through, and we stood there watching 100' trees falling over all around us. Needless to say, the clinic was canceled. Fortunately, everyone got out of there unscathed. I can only imagine what it was like in Houston. After hurricanes Francis and Jeane, all of my landscaping was wiped out, along with my fence. The windstorm insurance did not cover any of it. They only covered the "footprint" of the house... Not even the exterior paint! A special rider was required to cover anything else. Hopefully, that will not be the case for the good people of Texas. The most important thing, though, is personal safety. Gardens will recover... especially for people like us, who are sure to make it so! Bob

My Aloe Variegata (Tiger Aloe)

For plants that grow outdoors, the bloom time is in the spring.I am in Texas so it started showing its bloom in January. I first noticed a tiny long skinny protuberance , almost 1/16" by and 1inch and they were there for months before the bloom top showed in January. Here if you look real carefully just above the central "V" where the main leaves join, you will see it. If you click it , you will go to my flicker page, and click it again I think you can enlarge the image for a better view. I was able to know how many blooms I was going to get..Second shot shows the buds and the last shot shows how the "protuberance connects with the bud. This shows on another species of aloe but is hidden on the variegata. I thought it might be of interest. so you know what you are looking at. This does not happen on all aloes.

I was wondering as well about the pick-up and trailer.
It was a large 5th-wheel trailer, like a large multiple-horse trailer. There were 2 guys accompanying them, and normally they never leave the animals, but they did this time for a little while.

Jasdip, thanks for posting about the good outcome of this. I did read your other post about it, but was in a hurry so didn't reply, but it bothered me all day. All's well that ends well, so the old saying goes. But I sure hope they find the culprits and hang them by their thumbs. Dottie
