My Trip Into Town Today

Well, I had not planned to go anywhere today, but received a call from Amber and she was going to the bank. I decided to ride along and take Izzi as the one bank gives out doggy bones. They got their doggy bones. We went to a small grocery that has plants for sale. I have never seen Blue Lake green beans for sale already growing! I am surprised they didn't have sweet corn plants all growing in pots too. Amber bought a couple of some kind of peppers to add to their garden. On our way home we passed a closed filling station and on the sign where it should have the price of gas, it says, Arm n Leg. I guess that is why they went out of business. We got a good chuckle out of that. Has anyone else seen something unusual or different lately?

Oh, we got 3.25 inches of rain in our little area in a 24 hour period. It is going to be humid. 73 here right now.

It's 90 right now here in OK. It's only noon. I'm thinking we're going to have another very hot summer like the one last year. I'm ready for winter!

You sound like you live in the country. When I need to do errands I always say, "I need to go into town." lol.

I too am ready for winter....feels better here in Ok. then it has in La. But...putting mulch out is hot hot hot! Sooo glad we bought the misters as Sam's...they are Heaven sent for me and the dogs! LOL!! Have some beautiful lillies blooming in the yard I planted last year and a beautiful rose...need to take pics....I had to go to town this morning and again this evening.....our bank is having issues with Visa and I can't get any money out...hoping I can later today! And since it is just me home thinking chinese food for dinner! STacy

Yes Sue, that's the place where you can see the "Tooth of Time" from the windows. It's a bit noisy out there, but fun. I prefer eating indoors so I can hear my friends. DavidB took me there for my birthday one year with Taryn and DH. I haven't tested the new chef yet though. Perhaps when you come with Deanne (and Mary and Saucy and Honey and V and anyone else)we can try it. As to the "bullnose", it is actually black. I think it looks like a slippery seal or walrus! I'd prefer your idea Chelone. I don't think it really serves much purpose though. If it is windy and rainy or snowy, it really offers little protection, especially if there's a line-up! Sue, I was surprised to see everything cut down in the Fergus gardens. Some things that looked pretty bleak in mine are cut back, but I'm leaving the happy hostas and Japanese anemones, the agastache, and so forth. Even things with just pretty foliage will remain standing for a while longer. Call me lazy... Boy, does it ever get dark early. Sheesh.

I made a haul up there in November....am just itching to go back, I live 2 hours from Chamblees. Sabalmatt, were the plants cut back and just starting to leaf out or were they already leafed out with any buds? I am going to Jacksonville tomorrow....am sure tempted to go on into Tyler, but still have lots of mulching and planting to do here....Chamblees is definitely a candy store!! Judith

I'm hoping to get there on the day of the MA swap. I've only been once, and have to agree with Mindy that the owner is really great. And, not only does he stock plants that are hard to find, interesting and varied, the plants are incredibly well cared for. You don't come home with something already thinking what you'd need to do to get it to look good - it's been done, and done right. I wish I lived closer.

Beth, I made pickles first and then I finished dehydrating my tomatoes from yesterday and then I finished my yellow tomato sauce and THEN I made one batch of Multi-purpose Seasoned Tomato Sauce. By the time I finished it was around 2 p.m. and we hopped in the car and sped down to the Southlake Central Market to check out their produce selection. I was a little disappointed. They didn't have nearly as many heirloom winter squashes, pumpkins and gourds nor did they have as many heirloom tomatoes. However, they did have pickling cucumbers, so I bought another 5 lbs. Since I made bread-and-butter pickles today, I'll make dills tomorrow. Best of all, my own pickling cukes are about to reach pickling size, so I'll be able to make stacker-type pickles about Friday or Saturday. We also picked up a 10-grain store bakery bread that we like and a few other veggies. Then, it was off to Green Sprouts Farmer's Market a couple of miles up the road. It really is just a smaller, more affordable version of Whole Foods or Central Market, but I mean really, really, really smaller and not much selection. They had some great prices on produce, but a lot of their produce was overripe and I didn't purchase anything there. But, I did get visiting those two stores out of my system. The next time I want to go to Central Market, I'll go to Fort Worth because it has a better selection by far. I don't know this for a fact, but it seems bigger than the one in Southlake. It might be that the Fort Worth store has more autumn pumpkins and winter squash outside because they have a big covered patio type thing in front of the store where they often have musicians and cookouts when the weather is good, and I didn't see anything like that at the Southlake store. The only advantage the Southlake store has over Fort Worth is that Tim can stop by it on his way to work at DFW Airport if there's something I "need". I got home in time to spend an hour in the garden while my sweet DH grilled chicken and sausage and made dinner. I had used up all my tomatoes today making the multi-purpose tomato sauce, but I got to pick another 6 tonight, so I'm OK. Moni, I think Tulsa might have a Whole Foods or Wild Oats which are sort of similar to Central Market but more heavily focused on organics and less focused on gourmet-type fare, although there is a lot of gourmet type stuff, especially if you like artisan cheeses and breads. I'll do some research and see what I can find out about Edmond-OKC-Tulsa. Surely something in that area has a 'health food store' with a good selection. I have found they usually have the best produce in terms of variety and selection. Today I was looking at all the fingerling potatoes (six or eight varieties) at Central Market and making a mental note to buy some in December to sprout for spring planting. Two road trips in two days. I've got to stay home and weed and mow for the rest of the week or the yard and garden will be a jungle. Jan, I'll link Pendery's below. The web site is great, but if you're ever in the Fort Worth-Dallas area, you have to visit the store for the sheer pleasure of inhaling all the lovely aromas of the many spices and herbs. Don't miss their chili mixes. They are great and come in many combinations. Yep...all this weekend: saw a guy DROP his expensive SLR camera....he was literally running around trying to get the early light @ 5am. Then a guy almost crashed us, made a U-turn right in front of us, trying to get a parking spot, drove up into the curb and POPPED his front tire! Then we arrived @ the trail head to hike and a dog, golden retriever was being carried out on a stretcher. Owner said his paws were raw. :0)

Yes, my girls and I all live in the country, not too far from each other. Only my son lives in town.

Grinch, what type of misters did you buy? Ironically last night I had it on QVC back here in the office and they were selling personal hand held misters. 4 for $15. So I ordered them and I'll give three away to other family members. It's for when I'm gardening. I can't wait to get them! lol

Please, please don't say you are ready for winter. We had the winter from hell, it lasted about 5 months. I am loving the heat this year because I can go to the aquatic center every day.

I was out cleaning out my van and listening to the radio for a couple hours. Brought in the recycling cart and it felt so nice I just wanted to be outside a while. There's supposed to be storms moving in so I thought I'd get that done before they moved in. With the radio running that long I decided to take it for a short drive to charge the battery a bit. While I was returning a City-owned car came flying past me. I was only doing about 25 mph and the limit is 30 but she got to the stop light awfully quick. I pulled up next to her and noticed her banging away on the keyboard of the cell phone. Now I got a little annoyed. Light changed and off she went. I followed her and she was doing over 40 mph. Now I'm ticked. *If* she was texting, that's illegal in this state. If she was calling someone, it's still not a good idea in a City car. And 10+ mph over the limit is inexcusable so I called the City Manager when I got home. The annoying thing is this person was breaking one law for sure and possibly two, and if only one, was also driving in an unsafe manner in a residential area. If she got into an accident, the City would indemnify her without exception, even when she breaks the law. That is something I don't like.

So yeah, I saw something different or unusual today!

It's cloudy and humid. Rain to the south but so far isn't moving northward.

They are at Sam's Club not sure of the brand..they are on a long hose though and my hubby wrapped them around a tree for me on our patio it is heaven...I load the tyrex with a load of mulch.....stand under misters, unload go back to misters...LOL....the dogs....lay under misters!!!! Think they we 35.00 soooo worth it....Have one in La. strunk between the trees and the dogs and I hang out there during the day...(we stay in our 5th wheel there) STacy

Don't know if this will fit in the unusual/different category but here goes.Was in wal-mart this afternoon.it's 100+ out and I see this man.It was all I could do to keep from laughing.He had a long grey beard and long hair in a pony tail.He had on one of those safari type hats pulled way down over his head.He was wearing a heavy jacket of some kind,shorts and camo boots that came up to his knees that looked like rubber boots.He was a sight!LOL There are some really strange dressing people up here!
