This next pic is looking from the back kitchen door towards the front of the house. This window is 9" from the back wall.

This wall is 19' long. From the back wall to the window is 29", 74" of window, 18" between window and beginning of a 4' free standing range and vent hood and 59" from the end of the range to the wall with the window.

This last pic shows the entire kitchen from the dining area. The 2 boards on the floor outline a 2'x7' island that will contain a sink, dishdrawers and trash compactor. I will have right at 3' between each wall from the ends of the island.

Can anyone think of a more efficient layout than what I've come up with?

I can only configure (2) 3' cabinets, (1) 20", (1) 30" and (1) 29" base cabinet. For the top, I can only figure a way to put (2) 18" wide x 10" deep top cabinets without blocking the windows.

Any suggestions on layout would be much appreciated.

I don't know how to post pics here. I have a floor plan drawn out but it's saved on my hard drive.

If you have a scanner, you scan the floor plan as a jpg, and post as you did the other photos. Or you could take a photo of the plan and post. Good luck!

You could do a picture capture and upload it to a shared photo site or depending on what kind of computer you have do a "save as" and save it as a jpg in pictures then you can upload it to a photo site. One last option; print it out, take a photo and then upload it.

Once we can see a floor plan you will be amazed at the helpful and thoughtful people who will assist you on this forum.

Hopefully this will be dark enough to see.

I drew out the floor plan using a scale of 2' to a square.

The master bedroom, master bath, walk in closet and laundry room have not been built yet. We are in the process of having the footers poured to add the addition.

Any suggestions for a better layout would be very much appreciated. The entire house is gutted right now.

Still can't see the picture very clearly. Can you give the dimensions of the room that is the kitchen? I think you can have a really lovely kitchen with everything against one wall and potentially a small island. You can try the Ikea kitchen planner to draw the room with. It is free and easy to download from their website. You can save it as a bitmap and post on your photobucket account.

The window wall is 19' long.

The wall for the refrigerator, freezer and appliance pantry is 7'9". With the cabinets, the open space between the cabinets and refrigerator will be 5'.

I'm not so interested in colors as I am the placement of everything.

How fun it must be to start from scratch :-). We have been working on a minor kitchen remodel the past month and have some ideas for you (sorry for the long post).

A couple of ideas to consider instead of an island:

1) Create an "L" peninsula, extending out from the window on the short wall towards the dining room area. Place the stove in the peninsula (you would be looking into the family room while cooking). This shape creates a bit of separation between the kitchen and family room and makes it easier to move between the dining room table and the sink and stove.

2) Create a "U" peninsula with the window on the short wall at the center of the "U" and the stove on the right (you would be looking at the dining room table while cooking). This shape separates the kitchen from the dining room a bit and makes the countertop space behind the stove usable while cooking.

With our new cabinets, We will be "connecting" our island to the countertop space nearby, effectively creating a "U." We find this gives us more usable countertop and lower cabinet space.

In either scenario above, you could create an overhang on the peninsula (more countertop space) and place some stools on the other side.

A peninsula also provides more walkway space to get through the kitchen to the laundry room. We think 30" is too narrow. We did some space tests recently between our currently movable island (this will be our new peninsula) and our refrigerator which we moved across from the end of the island. We found that 48" is comfortable to get through with a laundry basket, or for one person to be in the refrigerator and another to walk by. Even 42" was too narrow. (Maybe take a laundry basket out and do a walk through!)

For the refrigerator, you could move it to the spot currently marked as "appliance pantry." The door would face towards the family room and swing to the left, opening towards the sink. You would build a 36" wall behind the refrigerator and put the freezer and appliance pantry behind this wall.

This would make the refrigerator closer to the work space and dining room table. It would also provide 3" or so of extra space in the area behind the refrigerator wall. This is because refrigerators are not as deep as they are wide (and inches count!). In addition, if the "U" peninsula is used, items from the refrigerator can be placed on the peninsula countertop which would be across from it.

How about a corner sink in the corner where the window is on the short wall? In addition to being closer to the stove, it would be an efficient use of space, providing more countertop and bottom cabinet space to the left of the corner sink. Perhaps then you wouldn't need the appliance pantry :-).

One more quick thought - if going with the "L" shape, you could place some storage cabinets for the family room on the other side of the peninsula, for games or other stuff.

I like the idea of facing the refrigerator towards the family/dining with the U shaped counter and I love putting the sink by that window.

I get so caught up in details, I lose sight of other ideas. I'm going to draw this out and see how it works.

One more suggestion .. a rectangular table with two chairs on each side might look more symmetrical in this space instead of a round. If space permits, you could go with a six-chair.
