Why is it so hard to find marble mosaic in Canada?

I am so frustrated with trying to find marble mosaic in Canada that doesn't cost a small fortune. I can find exactly what I want on Amazon.com or other American websites, but can't seem to find it in Canada.

Am I not looking in the right places?

I see no responses so I thought I'd mention that like (most) other products, we pay a premium in Canada (as you know, I'm sure). I found with some items that it is often cheaper to import them and pay for shipping, duty etc... than source them locally. Have you considered having your tile shipped up to Canada from a US retailer? It can still be cheaper sometimes. Tile is heavy though, so shipping would be steep.

I used to be scared off by all this seeming hassle, but bought several items for our kitchen reno at US sites and all went well, including a kitchen sink. Something to consider since it sounds like you know exactly what tile you're looking for and things like color matching wouldn't be an issue.

Hi, folks. I usually lurk (seldom post) on other gardenweb forums, but had to add this. I'm going to Sun Nurseries in Woodbine (MD) today looking for American Cranberrybush Viburnum (among other things). Wish me luck. Charmed - have you tried Sun? I was able to find Chionanthus virginicus there as well as Amelanchier arborea. Also I noticed that Behnke's down on Rt. 29 in Montgomery Co.is listed as a place to buy natives supplied by American Beauties native plants, so I'll probably look there for what I can't find at Sun. (As I recall, Behnke's is kinda pricey.) I'm in Catonsville, so these places may be closer for me, but you might want to see if they have what you're looking for. Why is good soapstone so hard to find???

oh I feel your pain! I agonized over wanting soapstone for my perimeter counters. Brazilian Black or Mumbai Grey from M. Tex - no other soapstone I found compared in look or overall quality. I wanted black or grey - no green. I searched locally for months and months. I am putting 50+ sq. ft. of calacatta on my island, and I was really taxing my budget as is. One day I was at my fabricators swooning over my marble slabs (which, btw, took JUST as long to find!) and I saw this single slab of Cambrian Black Antique granite. It had that same sensual feel as soapstone I loved - not quite the same overall - but I really *did* like it. I took a breath and let go of my soapstone vision and opted for the Cambrian Black. It looks amazing next to my marble with that very matte almost chalky look, but still BLACK. Anyhoo, just wanted you to know that I feel your pain and was THIS close to just shipping slabs from M.Tex, too. Hope all works out for you!

Gosh I hope not Rina. The first time i was in Canada was in Toronto. Drove through from New York and there was a riot that broke out. By the stadium or sports arena..whatever you guys call it. I think there was a game going on (obviously) lol, but that's when i really learned how seriously some take football! I think it was in the 70's...or maybe the 60's? i don't remember anymore lol.

Really frustrating part.. is there is no more Tide W/ Bleach Powder with a "clean" scent. The Clean Breeze scent... is gone. And the new "Original" scent... sticks to fabrics, and smells horrible. I was looking on the Tide website, last night. And I swear... it seems like there's a thousand less powders available. It's just, so modest, so little. Yet there's two million different liquids, in different scents. So... disappointing to say the least. Powder Wise. The ones I know I can find easily, locally are... Fab, Cheer, Tide, Gain, Xtra, Purex, All (F&C) and Arm & Hammer. Then there's American Ariel & Phosphate Free Foca and Roma. But... you better like whatever's on the shelf. Because there's typically just one or two different variety's. Sad... because when I was growing up, I remember shopping with my mom at Target... and seeing a one whole side, of an entire aisle of just Powder Detergents, in a million different options. Now... it's pretty slim. I think it's quite different overseas though. And in Mexico, almost everyone seems to use Powder, exclusively.

What kind of marble mosaic, Home Depot and Lowe's are both carrying more and more marble and mosaic tile. I just picked up a gorgeous basketweave at Lowe's for my shower.

The Tile Shop stocks and ships just about every type of tile. They are very customer friendly and located in Minnesota so they shouldn't be stumped by a shipment to Canada.

Where are you in Canada? I'm in New Brunswick and it's hard to find anything nice here!!!

We are at the end of our total kitchen reno and finally found a tile we liked locally (well in another city 1 hour away) after 2 months of looking. We purchased a great deal of our supplies for the reno from the U.S. on-line but matching tile colors can be so tricky that I didn't want to risk the return shipping costs. We don't have a Lowe's here, we have Home Depot but their selection is limited.

Luckily we live only an hour from the U.S. border and drive there to pick up our parcles, which saves a ton of money in shipping.

For our reno we purchased in the U.S.: all light fixtures, faucet and sink, all cabinet hardware including hinges/pulls and knobs, LG french door/double bottom freezer fridge and other stuff I can't remember....we saved a LOT of money that way.
