Heat and countertop choices

Our current kitchen, built in 1958, has countertops I would guess are "Formica like". While they are very basic, they have held up well through the years (if you don't count where it was singed from a stove top fire 40 years ago.) While there is little I like about our kitchen I do like I can take pans out of the oven and place them directly on the counter with no ill effect. The coffee maker, crock pot, and toaster set on the counter without any protection.

If I want a counter material that is equally heat resistant what should I be looking at?
