Instant Read Thermometers...How long is 'instant?'

We had to do our Christmas at home early this year (yesterday) and my dh gave me a few nice kitchen gifts I'd been wanting. Reading the literature that was sealed inside the packaging, I see that my new "Instant Read Thermometer," put out by the CIA, gives a reading in 8 seconds. I won't complain a whole lot, because my last 'instant read' one (by Pyrex and purchased at a restaurant supply) didn't work nearly that fast. -Apparently my definition of 'instant' is not the same as some of those who produce these things.

We watch America's Test Kitchen a lot and they seem to have one that gives a reading right away instead of taking time to crawl up to a final temp. Is that just the magic of TV or are there ones out there that really work that fast? I am just curious if I've been a quest for something that doesn't really exist. I want to be able to check temps without losing a lot of heat out of the oven each time because the doors are open too long.

I do know how silly it sounds to quibble over 8 seconds. But I had to ask.
