Single bowl sink with no other prep sink--your thoughts
Comments (18)In reference to your 30 inch base question... I have a 23 inch SS single-bowl in a 30 inch base and opted for this size because I have a small kitchen and preferred counter space instead of a larger sink (no prep sink either). I measured and found that the sink depth (mine comes to a bit over 9 inches including countertop) - and my choice of a high-arc faucet with a pull-down - was just as important as the width of the sink. I cook daily - and bake often - and wanted to be able to clean pots/pans/cookie sheets easily - which I can do with my 23 inch. I quickly move DW items into the DW so don't use my sink to stack/store so much. Like artemis above, I also have over-sink colanders that I love to use as I do lots of veggie rinsing/prepping and moving the over-sink items around on a single-bowl is super easy. I think it all comes down to use and personal preference. Note how you use your current sink - if you love it - keep it! Perhaps a change in faucet - or some new sink colanders/cutting boards - might make all the difference....See MoreFarm sink owners...how wide is your sink base?
Comments (14)Hi, everyone. This is my first time posting to this site... I'm several weeks in to a total gutting of the kitchen in my "new" (200-year-old) mill house. I'm going with a white fireclay farm sink undermounted in a slightly off-white cabinet base, with soapstone counters. EGAD! I ordered a 24" single bowl sink, and now am thinking it will look icky with all the filler needed to fit in the 30" sink base. But I got a great deal on it ($360 with free shipping) and to go the next size up (28") is like $700 plus the $50 restocking fee to send back the one I have now. The sales consultant doesn't advise going to a 30" sink in a 30" base b/c he says they'd have to "cut away at the base, ruining the integrity of the cabinet." Am I going to hate the smaller sink??? It's a tiny kitchen, so I am not so worried with the size of the sink and it's function, but more the look. Any advice/photos are appreciated. I've looked at a lot of shots and it looks like I should have gone with a smaller sink base, or a larger sink. Sheesh... live and learn! Thanks! Kirsten...See MoreWhere did you buy your farm sink
Comments (13)Is it best to buy a sink that is a standard set size such as the Dickenson or Whitehaus rather than say a Rohl that has a +- factor if I am not having custom cabinets made? I don't think this matters for an apron/exposed farm sink, since you will need to have the sink fitted and scribed into the top base front by your carpenter/GC, no matter which brand the cabinets are. If you're doing an undermount, I imagine it would probably be best to get one that's more regular, like a Kohler or Whitehaus, so that the edges are more or less even all the way 'round. (But I'm no expert!)...See MoreWhat are your thoughts about warming drawers? Do I need one?
Comments (15)I never had a warming drawer before. The 30" slide in Bosch range I purchased came with one, so now I have one. In the few weeks since we have installed the range I have used it several times. Here's how it has helped me out: I love it for pancakes, and waffles in the morning. I don't think I would use it for eggs, but we are a household of very fussy egg eaters(we won't eat them if they aren't from our hens). My oven has a proof function, but if the oven is occupied I can proof in the warming drawer. I just took muffins out of the oven and my kids are out playing in the snow. Stuck the muffins in the warming drawer and they will be even more appreciated when every one comes back in, wet and cold. Keeps the mashed potatoes perfect while I get the rest of the meal finished or just keeps the meal perfect while I relax with my husband and a glass of wine before dinner. Come lacrosse and football season, it will keep dinner warm whoever's practice or game goes late. And, like another responder my DH sometimes comes home pretty late, particularly if he is arriving from another city. It is nice to let him know I saved him a plate and that it is warm- otherwise he sometimes just doesn't bother with dinner and makes do with bananas(not that there is anything wrong with that!) Would I buy a specific warming drawer and let it take up cabinet space, probably not. If I ever need a new range would I look for one with a warming drawer instead of a storage drawer- yes....See Morethirdkitchenremodel
