Kohler Vault or other flat rim sink -- photos or reviews?

I would very much like to see a picture of a Vault topmounted in a real kitchen. I am especially interested in the smart divide version, but a picture of any topmounted one would help a lot. I'd also like to hear your experiences with it -- is there enough soundproofing material, is the gauge thick enough, does it drain well etc. I am guessing (?) that the performance would be the same whether it's topmount or undermount or the apron style... some of the reviews on seller sites are kind of mixed.

And while we are at it, does anyone else have a low rim or micro-edge (or whatever you call it) topmounted sink that you like? Or one you don't like, for that matter, so I will know what to avoid? I thought the Vault smart divide was going to be a little too expensive, but one or two sites have it for much less than the others (perhaps not a good sign, haha).

I have done a little looking, and am quite impressed with this sink. I guess no one on this forum has had any experience with said sink. I too will probably go with a drop in, that is if I can convince, DH to at least get new countertops! While I would love a totally new kitchen it is not in (the retirement budget) so will have to paint cabs and hopefully get at least laminate countertops. SIGH
If you find out anything else please post, they are much less expensive than micro edges I have seen!

Yes, I think the flat rim square-corner sinks look more up-to-date than the other kind, but I suppose they are more expensive to manufacture. I don't know if they get less gunky around the edge than a traditional drop-in, though. I hope you get your new countertop, maid!

I meant to post a photo earlier so people would know what I was talking about. This is the smart divide version; I don't know why it isn't on the main Vault page (linked below).

This post is two years old, so I don't know if you will receive an answer from the previous remodeler, but you may size your sink to be almost equal to the width of the island if you like, up to 7 feet. The concept of a workstation sink is that it replaces countertop space. I have personally worked with a 7-foot sink on display and thought it was wonderful. People who have had sinks that big and cook a lot say that they utilize all the space. You would be purchasing and keeping a number of different accessories in the sink at that maximum width, and you would need a minimum of 2 faucets. For the average kitchen, a minimum of 5 feet of sink width with 2 faucets is the point at which you can really begin experiencing the workstation sink features with accessories. Any smaller and you will simply not have room to leave accessories in the sink. I have a 48" wide single-ledge sink and leave only an 18" wide strainer basket inside to drain dishes. I also have 2 faucets which I consider essential at that width for spraying down both sides, and they come in handy when more than one cook is in the kitchen.

Found this thread because the Elkay Crosstown 31 inch sink we just had installed is pooling in the middle of the sink. Counters are so close to level that I'm not sure it would be reasonable for Elkay to complain. So some Elkay are fine and others are not. I'm going to try putting some olive oil and some Hope's Perfect Sink in to try to prevent the water's adhesion to the surface. But since I haven't found anyone suggesting/confirming ways to mitigate the problem I'm not hopeful.

Thank you all! Casey, thanks for the darkroom sink ref, that's really helpful. It does remind me that having a local metalworker just make a stainless sink exactly to spec might be the best and even cheapest way to go. Sink depth. Hmm. Marcolo, I take your points re. boiling water and safety. But by the time we undermount the Oceanview, it will be 8" deep (it's at 6 3/8" as purchased). Is 8" really that shallow in today's sink world? If this were going to be my only sink I'd go with something deeper for washing up, of course. But we'll have a big deep washup sink around the corner in the scullery for big pots/pans (pasta draining?). Claybabe, it's honestly a functional desideratum more than an aesthetic whim. We're not monstrous, but we are on the taller side, and our mutual experience with our current 10" deep farm apron sink AND 9" deep prep sink is that they are too deep to comfortably do any real prep in. We have repeatedly regretted this and sworn not to go so deep in the future. I know we could always raise the counters, but that's slightly more drastic/permanent, plus would cover even more of the windows and require step-downs to the O'Keefe&Merritt stove. But I'll measure out the Harborview to see whether it might work. I do cotton to those dual wall-mounted faucets -- yum! -- but was hoping do do a flushmount or undermount so there' s no break in counter surface continuity. I've lived with a vintage porcelain farm sink before and while loving the drainboards, was not fond of the line of dripping water that would form at the juncture to the counter.

The thing about fireclay is that it shrinks as it’s fired, so each sink ends up slightly different in shape. Sometimes it’s not quite flat and level at the base. Sometimes it’s the rim. Sometimes it’s a slight parallelogram. You can’t use a manufacturer template with them. They have to be individually templated to fit the cabinet and for the counter. That custom labor takes extra time, which results in extra costs. Sometimes that means significant extra costs and delays if you find that the delivered sink is actually bigger than specs, Or the rim is so out of whack that it will have a 1/4” gap to caulk. That means a reorder. In one case, a reorder from Italy, which took another 6 weeks of not being able to cross the finish line. But since the client was the one who insisted on that product, the delay was on their shoulders. That was BC. Before Covid, Who knows what a 6 week delay turns into now. In the end, that sink choice was an extra 2K over choosing the recommended Whitehaven. That’s additional labor, trip charges from the canceled stone fabricator, and other add on costs resulting from customization and delay.

THis looks like a great sink until you think ahead. How would you wash a cookie sheet or large items? As soon as you place something in the sink you cover the drain. Consider a large single bowl sink with a rear corner drain.

Hi, Mr. Rachiele, I know how you feel about divided sinks from what you've written on your website. [grin] The Vault actually does have offset drains, though you can't tell from the photo I've linked. I have thought about single sinks since so many here like theirs, but I have been cooking and washing dishes for many years and I know how I work, and a divided sink is best for the way I manage my dishes. A low-divide sink would allow me to wash and rinse large pans more easily and still give me the functionality of the permanent divide, which I need (I do not want a plastic wash basin). Thank you for your input!
