We removed the subfloor to the basement family room months ago, and I USUALLY remember not to step on the carpet tack strip still remaining (why hasn't DH removed it yet??), but when I DO- youch!

YIKES! After demo I was talking to my contractor and, pointing to the socket (thinking it was turned off), I touched it and said something to the effect that it was in a weird location when "WHAM!" I got a jolt of electricity all through my body! Boy did that get a laugh! Luckily I survived unscathed.

OUCH! I am glad you were not hurt worse!

flatcoat, I was feeling so sorry for you until I saw you fell into the concrete. Sorry, I still feel sorry for you, but I had to laugh. Glad you are alright!! I have a sister who falls just for the fun of it. I won't let her on my job site. LOL

LOL brutuses, I think I might be one of those klutzes that should not be allowed on job sites until completion !

I thought falling into the footing was hysterically funny ! They were DEEP holes (about 40"), and I was walking and talking to the builder, and suddenly one of my legs went down this enormous hole. So I sort of perched embarrassingly on the lip of the hole, thankful that I am female :-), and told the builder that I was measuring the hole depth and that he did a good job because it was longer than my leg ! Then I laughed so hard that I couldn't get out.

Heaven help me, I hope I can get through this remodel relatively unscathed ...

Gee Bill, wait until my builder starts tiling ! just think of all the stuff I can slip on/cut myself with/drop/break while he's doing that ! ;-) What is it they say ? "I'll charge you $X to do the job, 2x$X if you watch and 5x$X if you help."

Hopefully I'll have some cool pics of his tilework to share, he is a fabulous fellow who is doing most of my whole-house remodel himself ... officially he's a carpenter but he grew up working for his dad (a tile guy like your good self). He is SO EXCITED to get to do my tilework, and hopefully he'll get started on the bathroom once framing and plumbing roughin is completed this week. He was so surprised that I knew what a mudjob was (which I learned about in the Bathrooms forum and the John Bridge forums).

I swear I'll stay out of his way ...

When we first started demo, the jackhammer drove me nuts- I wore earplugs, stayed as far away as possible from the noise, etc. After awhile, I didn't notice it. (in retrospect, I lost my hearing AND my mind)

I wasn't even aware when they removed the 4 concrete steps up to the back door by the kitchen. So my GC and his subs were astounded one day to see the back door swing open and the homeowner fall out the door. They did a good job not laughing, but it had to be funny!

OMG - these stories are so hilarious! I'm sure a book could be written on the stupid things homeowners do during remodels! Of course it's only funny if noone gets hurt!

Maybe this will make you feel better:

Years ago, we bought an old house in need of lots of work and the extensive renovation project was underway. One morning on one of the first days of work, we were walking around downstairs with the contractor
In an upstairs bathroom, located just above the foyer, an old bathtub had been ripped out to make way for a new one.
A worker was standing on the wood supports where the bathtub had been, when he tripped and fell right through the foyer ceiling just a few feet from where we stood talking with the contractor.
Naturally, my husband and I were quite alarmed about the worker who had just fallen through the ceiling to the floor below. The contractor seemed unworried, just shook his head and said:
"I hate it when this happens when the homeowner is in the house."

My kitchen is pretty much done so I haven't been on the forum as much lately... but glad I looked at this thread! This is really funny (and instructive), so I think it needs to be bumped up!

I'm sorry to hear about your fall, but here's my public service announcement to you: if your ankle is still hurting, make sure to get it x-rayed sooner rather than later. I fell back in February, really twisting my ankle badly. Long story short, it felt better after a week but never healed completely. A few months after the fact I found out that it had been broken. I had been walking on it and now it will probably never heal properly. Really stupid on my part.

Gee meg, thanks for your concern ;-).I hope your ankle is at least working OK now. I totally understand how nasty ankle twists can be, my left ankle (the offending joint in this case) I not-so-fondly call my "rubber ankle". I damaged it very badly as a teenager, and probably should have had a surgical repair, but technology was not so good for that 20 years ago. Now I am very careful with it, and it "tricks" out on me at least a couple times a year, with rather painful consequences. On the upside, since there are no effective ligaments left in there, they can't tear anymore so the pain goes away in a couple days :-) I probably should re-consider surgical options before arthritis begins to set in. Argh.

Anyhoo, you will all be pleased to know that I have successfully stayed out of trouble since my little trip on Saturday. Tomorrow is electrical rough-in day.
