Another Barkeeper's Friend Wonder: Cleaning Old Brass
Comments (2)You're right, marita, BKF is great on old brass. I came back here searching for the thread in which I first read about it, to add my thaks, and came upon yours. I had tried several excellent products on my very old (and very tarnished) dresser drawer pulls, but the amount of elbow grease involved was daunting. I bought somke BKF and, per instructions for stains and heavily tarnished items, I made a paste with a little water. An old toothbrush worked wonders for getting into crevices. After rinsing, I polished with Maas metal polish, which brought them up to a nice, rich lustre and contains a corrosion inhibitor ... so I won't be doing it all again in a month. Now ... there's my husband's dresser to do ... Love this forum! Diane...See Morecareful with barkeeper's friend and polished nickel
Comments (8)BarKeeper's Friend is not a "friend" of nickel...polished or satin/brushed. Nor is bleach, btw. As a matter of fact, I recommend you avoid all similar cleansers/chemicals. In your case it was an accident, but to others...all you need to clean your nickel fixtures is a mild detergent and water. That's also, btw, why many of us also recommend you not get a nickel drain/strainer to match your nickel fixtures...stick with stainless steel....See MoreBarkeepers Friend - I don't understand the love
Comments (42)Isn't this Forun geat! Learn something new everyday. This is the first time I have heard of using BFK for 304 stainless sinks. I don't think the oxalic acid in BFK is good for steel. It's an oxidizer which should be avoided around steel -- although I admit I sometimes used it to re-sparkle 305 stainless "silverware" (I silverware silverware if its not silver?) We use baking soda. Never tried Bon Ami on stainless sinks, but can't think why not. BFK is great on our Kohler cast iron sinks -- the only kind of sink I would ever buy. Takes out any stain and leave a sparkling surface. Also great on copper pans....See MoreBarkeeper's Friend and Black Galaxy do NOT mix!
Comments (14)Was your stone sealed by any chance? Black Galaxy is inert and really should not be etched at all. I am guessing it is a reaction that took place between sealer residue on the surface of the stone and the oxalic acid in the BKF. Black Galaxy is a stone that never needs sealing anyway, but a lot of people still do, ascribing to the motto "Seal it, it can not hurt anything". I beg to differ. Anyway - back to point: Find out if your stone was sealed or not. My bet is that it was and the removal of the sealer would remedy your situation. Well, it hasn't been sealed since it was installed and I would think that if they had sealed the slab before bringing it out that the Acetone I used on the remnant would have noticeably removed it from that part of the stone it had been tested on. So I am going to have to believe that there is no sealer in place on the stone. I hope that they find a way to fix it because even though it is a slight blemish (my wife hasn't even noticed it yet) it will bug me forever if it can't be removed. However, if they do have to polish it out won't that leave a "shallow" spot in the counter where the extra material was buffed down?...See Morecat_mom
