Prefab granite top
Comments (6)gmp3, Was that $425 total for BOTH counters installed WITH sinks? That's just a little over $200 each? I thought I got a good deal with my 40" counter for $300 including fabrication, sink will be about another $80 on sale. We will be installing it ourselves. Anyhow, there is usually far more choice in going to a granite yard and asking for remnants. It's surprising what is considered a 'remnant'. At my place, they have whole slabs that I can choose from. Still have one more bathroom to go, and just missed out on grabbing a piece of 'blue louise', not that it would go with my BR, but OMG was that a gorgeous stone! This pic is from a previous GW post. Funnily enough, when I saw it at the granite place I said it reminds me of a Van Gogh painting, which is one of its common names!...See MoreSelection of granite slabs to cover 4x9 feet of cabinets?
Comments (8)Our island in the home we built in 2004 was 9 1/2' x 4'. I did not have much trouble finding a slab large enough to fit it. Some did not, but many did. I had originally planned for 3cm and had to go down to 2cm because I wanted it in one solid piece for the island. The fabricators said it would be too heavy for them to bring in and I would have to do 2 pieces if I stayed with the 3 cm. I'm not really sure if that was just our fabricators or if there is equipment that most fabricators have that ours did not have for transporting large slabs. (Four men carried it into the house.) We were in a very rural area. We are remodeling the kitchen in the house we are in now and I just recently chose granite for this house. I did notice this time that there didn't seem to be very many 2 cm slabs. Most everything was 3 cm. It might just be our area. We are South Central. Talk to your installer, I guess, before you decide. Then you'll have all the facts. FWIW, that island was magnificent! One of the things I miss most about the house....See Morequestion about pre-fab granite
Comments (2)The place we ordered the slabs from had an installer. He wasn't an employee, but a contractor that they knew and recommended. It definitely is tricky to find an installer with pre-fab because most granite fab shops will only fab/install granite that THEY sell, but if you search the phonebook and call around, you can find people to install prefabs....See MoreAnyone used prefab granite?
Comments (9)mama2c - Where are you located? I live in the Seattle area and most of the prefab shops (probably 8 to 10) seem to be in a 4 block radius in an industrial area of downtown (SODO). They all sell the same types of things: imported Chinese cabinets, sinks, tile, and the prefab granite. I think they probably sell a lot to contractors. These seem to be low cost operations so I don't think they do much conventional advertising. I found a few from Google searches and a few also advertise on Craigslist. I have a list for anyone interested in the Seattle area....See Morekarenyang
