houseful, I love Moonstruck, too. On our first date my husband and I went to a little Italian restaurant in Boston's North End, and the next day we saw Moonstruck. Every time my kids say, "no fair!" I think of Nicholas Cage's immortal line, "I'm no ****ing" monument to justice!"

Houseful's post reminded me of a towel I bought for my girlfriend who went through a stretch where she did a lot of entertaining, due to graduations, baby showers, birthdays, etc.

The extended family was all seated around the dinner table. The table itself was laden with a bountiful feast. As they joined hands to say grace, Mom nudged the youngest daughter who whispered in return, "but I don't know what to say!". Mom said, "just say what you've heard mommy say when she prays, sweetie." So, with every head bowed, the little girl prayed...

"Dear Lord, WHY did I invite all these people to dinner!"

I love all these funny kitchen themes! I now want to see the movie Moonstruck! What a great ending. I also love that my aim is improving!

I have a Cathy Magnet that says: "For a delicious meal, take me out to dinner". I have been practicing cooking in my new oven and I am getting better. :)

Clergychick - that is laugh out loud funny! Love it.

I've delayed knee replacement surgery so I can get spring housecleaning done in January. (I haven't done it in the five years we've lived here, so you could say it needs it.) "A place for everything and everything in its place." Impossible? I say not. It's only DH and me, and I'm the sloppy one.

I think you would all find humor if you could see a picture of my current kitchen. I don't have pictures of it really, as it's really the ugliest room I have ever seen in my life. I suppose if everyone wanted a good laugh, I would be willing to snap a few photos for the comic relief of all.

Clergychick, your story reminds me of a family dinner a friend attended years ago. His elderly grandfather was there and, sadly, he was losing it a bit. At the end of the dinner he looked around and said, "That turned out better than we expected!"

The funniest thing I've read here in a while was courtesy of johnliu discussing the appliance forum:

"The funniest thread on AF was the one on does anyone make a truly quiet refrigerator. On and on, people who were on their third and fourth refrigerator, building insulation lined enclosures with reinforced bases, sleeping with earplugs, and generally coming apart at the seams because ice was clinking in the ice maker or the compresser could be heard through three doors, two walls, and a fifth of gin. No-one could agree on which brands were quietest or what quiet really meant. It was like an Internet discussion of high end audio. I do not know, but suspect, that most of the posters were single because they'd surely have unplugged their spouses, the darn thing was breathing all night and wouldn't stop! I did learn two useful things from that thread though. The first was that life is supposed to be hard, hearing the ice clinking all night is how we build character. The second is that for a really quiet refrigerator, get a propane or nat gas powered adsorption fridge - these are full-size versions of RV refrigerators, zero moving parts, and you can disconnect the cursed icemaker."

Wow, Schmetz, that is some kitchen! On the bright side, you won't have to worry about people thinking the "before" picture looks better after you remodel it! Good luck!!!

OK Schmetz. You win. That is one seriously ugly kitchen. But I don't think it would be fair to laugh at it until AFTER you aren't actually using it as a kitchen. So I'll try and hold it together until then. For your sake I hope it's soon!

No really, laugh it up. I have to laugh every time I walk in there to keep from crying, or taking a sledgehammer to the entire room. We had to have a sitter for the two oldest girls because we weren't sure if it was even safe to walk around the house. I took the worst pots and pans I had and some very basic food and my husband and I camped out on the living room floor while we cleaned things up. We had to sleep with the doors and windows open because of all the cleaner fumes mixed with the smell of old house. The first night we had 4 stray dogs come in the house looking for food! It took a few weeks before we would actually let the girls inside. The exposed wiring has been removed and there is now an actual light fixture in there. The walls are still yellow, with both borders and the yellow plaid wallpaper.

At first I thought that was a mood board for one of the design problems...was going to say it was very original, but not my taste.
