Mixing appliance colors (white and stainless) (pics)

We currently have a white Hotpoint gas range, white Bosch dishwasher, white Amana OTR microwave, and stainless Summit refrigerator. We want to replace the microwave because the plastic trim on the door is cracked and peeling off. Which would look better: white or stainless?

Stainless is a little more appealing to me because I think it would be more durable than the white plastic finish we have now, but would it look weird with the white range directly below it? We love the range, which is just a few years old and works really well.

We don't want to get a vent hood. The setup we have now is functional and works for us. Micro is vented directly to the outside.

We are also planning to replace the countertops -- I think with some sort of gray (probably laminate) -- and put in a backsplash.

I think the one you posted would work. Otherwise since the range is white I would stick with white.

I think white can mix with SS but I must 'fess up that this is what I'm doing. Oh yeah, I'm doing a little rationalization because we can't afford to replace our not-quite-2-year-old fridge. But I've also seen it done and done well by fellow GWers, too. buffalotina's kitchen (link above) is one example. I remember another lovely kitchen with a white fridge, SS appliances and white cabinets but danged if I can remember whose kitchen it is nor can I find it in a search. However, I did turn up gracesantacruz's wonderful kitchen with white appliances mixed with SS (link below). Personally I prefer white and SS over black and SS but I echo chrisk327's thoughts: white/SS appliances for white or light toned kitchens and black/SS appliances in wood kitchens, especially dark-stained wood cabinets. But there's a caveat. If you are mixing so-called stainless appliances that have as much or more black on them than stainless (the amount of SS is more like a flourish than the main finish so why are they labeled SS?) then yes, black appliances may mix better with them than white. IME, it's not as easy to find appliances, especially ovens, that are mostly or all SS. I wish appliance manufacturers offered appliances that are a mix of white and SS. Stainless finishes have improved so much in the last few years. They are much easier to maintain than they used to be. When you go to look at appliances, look for a brushed-looking finish, and touch them everywhere. You'll see at once which ones will show finger prints. Avoid those. Otherwise, cleaning is pretty easy. By the way, that Samsung in white definitely dents, so just being white doesn't mean it's going to be low maintenance. As for the overall look, I don't think of stainless as fancy, it's more of a commercial look, or in your case, just consistent with your other appliances. Another alternative - scour ebay and Craigslist for panel-ready refrigerators. There are lightly used SubZeros and KitchenAids all over the place just waiting for panels. Just out of curiosity, what are you doing with your old fridge? Here's what I did with mine in the house I'm now living in, and the dw of the beach cottage I sold in 2010. No one else will recommend this by the way. I bought maple PSA (self adhesive) wood veneer, applied it to the front and sides of my bisque fridge and painted it white. It is absolutely beautiful. I like it even better than my sister's integrated panel fridge. You can try it on your old fridge and see if you like the effect. Painted wood next to painted wood is lovely. Don't do this on an appliance you're keeping if you haven't practiced first, or at least, start in the back. Just a thought.

OK I have been there and I can relate. So take my advice in the spirit in which it's intended, which is kind. Get over it and embrace stainless for the neutral material that it is. Honestly. I belabored it and put off replacing appliances, or insisted on white, only to realize it's no big deal. Get good looking stainless and you will forget about it in no time, I promise you! The thing with white is that it's not going to match your other whites anyway. And even if it does, guess what--it's going to change in a few years and you'll be like me staring at white cabinets next to a white dishwasher and wondering in my head "which one of you discolored?" The SS bothered me at first, especially fingerprints. But if you choose attractive ones, I almost guarantee you'll be happier than if you went through all the trouble to go with white. Panels are nice, if you can afford them, but really the lower-end brands that advertise "panel ready" products are disappointing at best. A cabinetmaker that I know tells me they're simply not designed for a good-looking panel installation. Share some pics of what you've got, and maybe people can help you out. In a small kitchen, I'd choose appliances (especially the fridge) with the fewest bells and whistles on the surface. Ice dispensers and curved fronts are really distracting. Go for low-profile, streamlined stainless and you'll be surprised how much it just disappears. I do totally understand your dilemma, but I think you'll be just fine ;-)

I think you can definitely mix them. However, I wouldn't mix them on the same wall. For example, if your fridge and your range are on one wall in black stainless, you could add a regular stainless DW and microwave in the island. If you're going this route, carry the mixed metal idea through to your faucets, hardware, and lighting, too. Lots of great photos on this site with mixed metal finishes in kitchens. All that said, I wouldn't do this if you're planning to sell the house in a few years. If it's a look you love and you will be in your home for many years to come, go for it.

My kitchen's mixed. Refrigerator & stove are white. Microwave, dishwasher & sink are ss.

Someday, I would like to have all ss.

I didn't want to replace perfectly good appliances so I purchased the bosch microwave and I will replace the white stove and fridge down the road.

We will mix stainless and white as well, as our fridge is white and still looks new. It would be a waste of $$ to change it out at this point. Our wall oven and warming drawer are stainless, our cooktop is white with gray grates, and I am thinking about either a stainless dishwasher or a white one with stainless handle. It is possible when we get to that point, I may change my mind and want to change out everything, but right now, I just cannot justify that added expense. FWIW, I think that white and "silver" go well together, so it will be just fine. At this point, I am calling the stainless "a little jewelry" in my kitchen.

Laurie 2008, I am wondering what your countertop is--it looks really nice.

shelayne - Thanks. My countertop is 3cm granite with a bullnose edge. The name of the granite is Luna Pearl, sometimes called Bianco Sardo.

Colorwise,

I think the Bosch would work really well to tie in with your white range.

But, having had my cracked white door replaced on my OTR MW (I'm sure because my DH insists on slamming it shut), AND just having had the vent grill replaced for the same reason, I'd be leary of getting even the Bosch if that white part is plastic. We've had our MW for less than a year, and luckily it is still under warranty, but I don't know how long it's going to be before another plastic piece cracks- so I can anticipate replacing it one day with SS, unless I can find a white metal MW.

We just redid our kitchen and had a new white DW that was white. I went w/ new SS appliances and brought a pannel to cove the DW in SS. (It was from Sears) The pannel came from Frigo, you can look them up online, Sears told me of them. I did have to buy a new control pannel to change that part to black from Sears. The one in your picture combining both may be an inexpensive way to change it. You can price this option to.

We have our W&D in the kitchen, which are white. We will replace our current white appliances with stainless when they go--which could be at anytime as they are all pretty old. It's nice to see you have made this work and it doesn't look odd at all.
