Hope this kitchen info will help someone

I spent so much time on this forum several years ago when we were building our home. I got so much good information from others that I like to share what we did. I wrote up what we did for our kitchen functionality in my blog today. I've provided a drawn layout with labels, lots of photos and explanations of why we did what we did for our family kitchen. I've covered our work zones and storage needs.

I hope the info that I provide in my blog will be helpful to someone. Even a tiny bit!

Don't know if this will help but I ran across this set of conversion/application tables while looking for other info so thought I'd post for you...just in case it might help. It's for KY but the Soil Prep section should be applicable for all and it covers both organic and chemical application needs based on both 100 sq.' and 1000 sq.'. I hope it might be of help. As to adding now vs. later - if I picture your "mounds" correctly, I don't see why you should have any problems amending now around them. I use raised wide-bed mounds too in some of my beds and have never had a problem with adding amendments to the valleys, knowing they will be incorporated into the entire bed in the fall. If the previous occupants smoked, what you are seeing after washing may be nicotene residue, not wood stain. Of course, grease residue is another probability. Either can be washed to remove. 20 year old cabinets have to have been finished with some kind of finish or the wood would be cracked. warped, and/or shrunken enough to be obvious. What kind is the problem. Varnish would be my first guess, but that is only a half educated guess since many builde4rs used varnish. The other finish used a lot is lacquer. Which one kind of depends on who built the cabinets. Varnish is rather easy to apply, lacquer is more difficult. What you use to add protection depends on several factors. Your ability/experience in applying wood finishes, for instance. That is nothing like painting walls/etc. Whether you can spray on the finish or need to apply by brushing/rolling. The look you want makes a huge difference. Water based finishes are easier to apply, but do not change the color. Oil based add the 'warm amber' tone many people expect or desire. Water based have very little objectionable odors, while most oil based finishes do. Lacquer needs to have ample ventillation(power venting, not just an open window or two) and a respirator when applied. Shellac is not usually used since it dries so quickly it is difficult to get a decent finish texture. The scale of ease might be as follows: Brushed/rolled- Water based poly Water based varnish Oil based varnish Oil base poly Sprayed- Poly varnish lacquer

Thank you so much for sharing this information. Everything is so well thought out. My current kitchen plans incorporate a small bulk item pantry that looks similar to yours. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your pantry so that I can get a better feel for how much mine will be able to store?

I gathered several ideas from your blog that I intend to incorporate into my kitchen design. You made made me think about things I had not previously considered. Thanks again for your generosity in sharing your insight and putting together such a nice resource.

You a very nice gal to take all this time/advice and share.
I love kitchens that have that little something different but at the same time make you wish you could hang out for a while and absorb the comfort and beauty.

Our kitchen is so simple and casual compared to the many gorgeous kitchens on the forum, but it functions really great and we love it. It is a bit different. LOL

The closet style pantry has a 24" wide door.
The inside shelf dimensions are 32" wide.
Each shelf is 16" deep.
The shelves are all fixed in place by the trim carpenters per my request.
The bottom shelf is 24" off the floor.
There is 13" of height between each shelf.
There are 4 shelves.
The ceiling is 9 ft high.

The emergency shut off valve to the water supply is located in a recessed panel down in the wall by the floor.

Did I miss a measurement that you need?

Past experience - In my previous house we had a 5' wide closet pantry with double doors. I found that I often lost my ingredients, soup cans, etc in there. That's why I did the hutch style pantry for foods plus the pull-out for canned soups and such. Still, we wanted the bulk pantry for the dog food, paper towels, picnic supplies, etc. I have cup hooks on the wall inside where I hang my aprons (3).

And, I think your kitchen is gorgeous! It can be simple, functional AND gorgeous all at the same time.

WOW! I meam WOW! As said above not only is your kitchen terrific but what a communicator you are. I so wish I had read your blog before designing my kitchen as your analysis and logic have led to a kitchen that is not "just another pretty face" but a functioning wonder. And an anticipatory thank you from all the future GW'ebbers who will benefit from your logic. I wish we had a "button" on this forum that led one to the "Sweeby Test" and two to your kitchen design blog.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this! We're finishing up the kitchen in our new home, and this is just the type of thread that would have been invaluable to us at the start.

I'm certain many will benefit from the time you took to put this information together. I'm going to pass it on to my BIL who is just breaking ground on a new home. He's asked for my help with the kitchen and you've included details I'd already forgotten about!
