Have you seen Beagles' cutting board that pulls out? It even has a hole in it to brush the crumbs through to the trash can that pulls out below it!

My DH is making a base cabinet with a cutting board pullout right now. It's going to be the old fashioned kind that just fits in a slot (no drawer slides like Beagles').

Are you asking how wide the slot can be or how wide the cutting board can be?

Ok, DH says you need to talk to your cabinet person because it depends on the construction technique for the cabinet.

If you use slides, like Beagles, it will depend on the space the slides take.

We are doing framed cabinets so it just depends on what looks right. He thinks frameless cabinets would be easier to do with drawer slides.

My DH is pretty enamored with framed cabinets making him rather narrow minded about frameless cabinets.

Would you be concerned at all about the stability of the surface? Two directions concern me:
For the horizontal stability, I guess you could get locking pull outs, or something.
But if the mechanism is designed for horizontal stability will it be up to the task of vertical strength. I am wondering about the abuse the pull out might get from the hard up and down motion of rolling out dough and kneading- maybe I am just a brutal kneader I do often knead to relax. I have no knowledge about this, I just think it would make me nervous in my own kitchen- so please excuse my ignorance.

Ours is 25 inch similar to Beagles - but without the hole - I built it as a writing surface - so can use like a desk - it is in our sunroom and part of our "caves"- although a tad high for a standard chair. This is not all the way pulled out.

I am about 5' tall. Our counter will be 36" high (with counter top)... my pull out cutting boards will be 34.25 inches off the floor. There will be three of them. One will be my prep surface. The other two will be used for overflow counter space.

My pullouts widths will be 18", 23" and 18.5"

I'm with Localeater. Do you really want to knead dough on a surface that's not completely supported? Maybe I just haven't had great pullout boards in the past, but I would never knead dough in them. Mine have never seemed anywhere near stable enough to do so. I don't think I'm too ferocious of a kneader, although some doughs do need a little more work than others.

The strength aspect is one concern, for sure. I don't knead that often but still the downward pushing would be a concern. Never thought about the sliding back and forth thing, either. Don't these fancy pants slides have stops built in to help offset the tendency to 'glide' when you are working on them?

But man, Beagles and a2's look sturdy.

So, a2gemini: would you feel like your pull out would be strong enough to stand up to some rolling out of cookies or kneading of bread dough?

Williamsem: that table is kind of neat. The price, though. eek. DH would no doubt bring up the question of how much bread we could buy for 500.00.

deedles - it does have a stop, so doesn't move. It is pretty strong - but then again - I had a drawer failure...

I would guess that the glides and side walls could support 75 lbs minus the weight of the board.., so unless you are cranking your whole weight - it is probably OK.

Exciting to hear about your powder room! Did you post on bathrooms? Our next project is our master bath, guest bath, and powder room but we went over budget on the kitchen, so need a bit of recovery time.

Do you want to knead dough on wood? It's great for chopping, but I would think someting like marble would be better for kneading dough. I think of a marble slab on an old-fashioned kitchen table.

Ours is similar to Beekeepers, 22 inches wide, but without the hole. Its glides are rated to 500 lbs! Our wonderful cabinet maker even sat on the darn thing to show me I needn't worry about failure. He said he could put a stop in in, but so far it hasn't been necessary as we knead or roll from side to side.

Wow! What glides did you use? I didn't check ours but assumed the same as the rest of the kitchen - but it does work differently, so maybe it is greater - will have to check!
