nickel allergies and nickel faucets

My kid has a nickel allergy. She used to play a nickel plated flute and we thought she had cold sores. We put clear tape over the mouthpiece, and the cold sores never came back. Nickel earrings turn her skin red. Plus my father-in-law etc.

So the waterstone faucet I like has solid brass or stainless steel construction. Do I have to write them about the finish? Is there a nickel color finish that doesn't have nickel? Or is this just a wonderful excuse to go with a dark finish? Any experience out there?

A friend of ours just realized she has a nickel allergy and had to replace a ton of hardware in her house. It was very expensive to do so. I would say since the faucet is expensive, not to mention the countertop you will have to drill into to install the faucet, it can't hurt to find out if there is any nickel in the finish or any parts. I would mention there is an allergy involved, so you will be more likely to get accurate information. Try their web site, they may have a way to send a quick e-mail. It would be better to find out now than to have to undo it later.

Why not just use chrome? less expensive too.

I have a similar contact allergy to costume jewelry and you are not going to have any issues from touching nickel. If you had the kind of serious allergy that is triggered by casual touching you would have had episodes in the past since you have probably touched nickel in that manner all your life. Having that kind of allergy, I did some reading on it and it is generally caused from long contact with the skin as well as there being heat and moisture which leeches out the irritant. For most people the real issues are places where one might sweat or there is moisture - e.g. pierced earrings, the back of the neck and it doesn't generally occur were a pendant might touch the skin and so there is less of the kind of movement and moisture where there is less prolonged contact.

brushed nickel - satin nickel....difference?

Brushed finishes literally have fine brush marks (microscratches?) in the plated finish (or in the metal under the plating). Satin can be a finish achieved by media-blasting the metal to a matte finish with no discearnable scratches in any direction. But, sometimes a manufacturer will call brushed "satin". I took some pics of the three pulls I am mainly considering. One is in PN b/c that is all they had and the other two are brushed nickel. After looking at them, I think I might be ok with the brushed nickel. Here are all three. Bottom is obviously the polished one. It is the one I thought I would like the best too, until I got them all installed (this is in my current mudroom, not future kitchen--cabinets aren't installed yet). The top is Jeff Alexander Belcastel, second is a Hickory pull that looks very similar to JA Bremen and last is JA Tiffany. I think I like Belcastel! I thought I might avoid the squarer look b/c my pendants are rounded, but I think it is my favorite. Here is a view of the two I like the best. Would love opinions.

Find out how much, or how little, affects the nickel allergy person.
Chrome or stainless have a small amount of nickel in the recipe.

I would take stainless steel. It's not plated like brass is. But your answer to the 1st question above is what will guide you.

On wikipedia you can get more details about the % nickel in different recipes (also called alloys).
