I'm really interested in hearing what the GW KDs have to say about this. I haven't had anyone I talked to mention appliance issues that are specific to inset and I'm planning on inset. I haven't really started looking at appliances yet, though.

I wasn't planning on doing "integrated" ... I don't really like the look.

In general, are there issues particular to appliances and inset? Is there a need to make the base cabs a bit bigger as is usually done on wall cabs?

Aptos_ca, I like seeing the stainless steel appliances and not having them covered with doors as it breaks up the look of cabinets everywhere. I wish I had no appliances and no tile right now and I was starting from scratch on my kitchen but I am not. But I am glad that my question may help not only me but others considering inset cabinets. Hopefully we will have some replies when the busy Thanksgiving weekend ends.

You can pull the cabinets away from the wall 3". That means your counter will be 27" deep rather than the standard 24" deep. It is wonderful to have deeper counters! You do not need to buy deeper base cabinetry; just pull away from the wall the standard 24" deep cabinetry by 3". Then you can place your DW as flush as you want.

You will also need to have your uppers be 15" rather than the standard 12" deep. This is a huge advantage--pretty much a necessity with inset cabinets. Inset cabinets lose space due to the frame. If you have standard 12"-deep uppers, your interior space will be 10.5" or so. Go look at your dinner plates' diameter, or your glasses. I bet the plates won't fit, or just barely, and you won't be able to have glasses more than 2 rows deep.

Your KD should know all this. I'd be concerned that s/he hasn't mentioned these options for inset cabinetry, but has simply told you that your KA DW won't fit. Can you find someone else?

It's not a big deal to either have the cabinets made deeper, or to use blocking to pull them forward (cheaper). If you use blocking, you just need the end cabinets done with an extended side, or buy a separate applied end panel that covers the blocking.

KitchenAid dishwashers are also known to be a tad deeper than other brands, so this should always be taken into account by your kitchen designer. If your layout can fit it, you certainly won't regret having slightly deeper countertops.

I wish I had known that the KitchenAid dishwasher was deeper before buying it since then I would have picked the Bosch Dishwasher or a different brand with the pull-out silverware rack.

Lynn, no good answer to your questions, but I had to laugh as I also have a KA dishwasher, GE cafe range and LG refrigerator.

FYI, the fact that the diswasher takes magnets does not necessarily mean that it's cheaper stainless. Most kitchen items are probably made with the 300 series stainless steels which are not magnetic. There are several alloys from a different series of stainless steel that are magnetic. Many of these are higher strength materials and also cost more than the 300 series material. It just depends on what the manufacturer decided to use based on the requirements of the design.

We have paneled top tray Kitchenaids and inset cabinets. I believe our cabs are pulled out 1" extra to accommodate the deeper American appliances and the wood panels, so 25" deep cabs and deeper countertops. When they are closed the DWs are flush with the surrounding cabs.

There are windows, not uppers, in that area now, but the old kitchen also had deeper base cabs and 15" deep uppers. We liked the deeper uppers, but they were hung a little too low over the countertop.

AnnaC54, that is funny that we picked the same brands when we were choosing appliances. Thank you for your input on the stainless steel.
