Here is a great use for my basil right before the coldest night so far. We had a great time in the "Kitchen" ! Hope you enjoy! Caroline

ok, first of all--how fresh of you to post just-picked basil when you know darned well it's been too cold up here for basil for awhile now! LOL!!

I'd say it looks yummy but I think I see some peppers on that pizza, so I might have to reserve judgement on that... :-)

hilarious...4 days ago just used the last of the parsley for a lasagna - although I don't know how good it was anymore. Brrrrrr it's cold in Chicago!

Agree with the others, yes, basil will bite the dust. But, the good news is it is still possible to grow some in a pot for indoors. I do that every year. I think you still have time in zone 6. Basil seeds germinate fast in warm soil. Put a few in a pot and take it indoors when the weather turns cooler (before the frost) :) I use an 8 inch pot, deep one, because they really have a root system. Water every day during the winter and you will be rewarded. I usually keep mine going all winter long in a south window. Love the stuff. Ever make tomato confit? Put whole tomatoes, whole garlic heads, sea salt, pepper, and a ton of basil leaves in a big wide baking pan. Pour olive oil over all and roast uncovered in a slow oven for several hours. When the tomato skins come off, just pick them out. The garlic will just pop right out of the head, soft and yummy. You can freeze it if you like. It is so good on pasta, or used as a dip for garlic bread. Yum!

Caroline, that looked so (mouth watering here) good. I'll have to try making something similar since I now have a baking stone for baking ciabatta bread :o). One of my new favorite sandwiches is a southwest ranchero, chicken, bacon, tomato, red onion, baby spinach and a slice of cheese done up on a faccasia bun which was crisped up in a hot oven for a few minutes. Epazote is a re-seeding annual, often treated as a perennial. It can quickly become a weed as the seeds can spread far and wide. Culinary Uses: Much used in Mexican dishes, especially with beans. Use the leaves to flavour chicken, sauces, corn, fish, cheese, and mushroom dishes, and with beans to counter flatulence. Do not eat the seeds. Medicinal Uses: Used to eradicate intestinal worms, when steeped in milk and sugar. A weak tea of Epazote will aid flatulence. Also used to treat tinea and as an expectorant. Leaves rubbed onto insect bites will ease discomfort. Juice expressed from the whole plant can be applied as a wash for haemorrhoids, tinea and other fungal infections, and wounds. Warning: Do not use when pregnant. Excessive doses may cause dizziness, nausea, convulsions or even death. Can cause contact dermatitis and allergic reaction in some people. Basil is an annual, almost guaranteed to die when the cold sets in. Harvest while you can.

thanks, douglas! I went outside today, 24 hours after the damage, to assess what looks damaged. Out of 35 tomato plants, only two are wilty looking, my Fourth of July and Mr. Stripey, and then my Pink Brandywine has yellowed leaves but I'm not sure if that's from the frost or if it wasn't doing well ahead of time. I didn't notice it yesterday, so I'm guessing the frost. One of my six Romas is looking questionable, too, but it might need to be watered. Out of my 37 pepper plants and 2 tomatillo plants, everything looks completely green and healthy. Meanwhile, five of my eight cucumber hills are goners and the other three might soon follow. And one of my four basil plants is shriveled. So far, the cukes bore the worst of the frost damage, no question. And after reading posts here about Mr. Stripey's production and the bad taste of Fourth of July tomatoes, perhaps I'm no worse off with those gone. But I do love pink Brandywine tomatoes, so I have to replace that one. Thanks for all the advice. I'll keep you guys posted if more of them die, just so that my original thread becomes something of a reference in itself since I didn't see this topic addressed when I searched for it ahead of time.

I was hoping to find one last bit of basil here last week, but no such luck...Just some sad, black branches left. Now there's nothing, since my kiddos did a spectacular job cleaning out my garden boxes. As usual, looks yummy, Caroline!

Looks yummy! Buffalo mozzarella? We use a lot of basil here too. Favorite use is pesto or almost anything Italian, then Thai green curry, then caprese salads. The remaining plants in my Earth Box are flowering right now, but that is a fluke and won't last long. We rarely have a hard freeze here, but the basil always goes away when it gets cool. The Italian parsley stays all Winter, which is wonderful as I use it in just about everything. I can only imagine the fabulous aroma that comes from your kitchen!!!

Looks delicious, Caroline! The last of my basil came in the house a month ago. It is hanging to dry on the metal rails from which the acoustic tiles have been removed (so I could see how high the ceiling really is). Gotta love a kitchen remodel, LOL.

babka:The smells were YUMMY> And we have leftovers ! I wish it was Buffalo....just the little balls of fresh Mozzarella. You are in a warm zone I see. My Itl parsley stays pretty well too. The frost didn't get the last of the basil afterall but it isn't very lush. I had already given up pinching flowers.
