BM Aura paint for cabinets?

This is what our cabinetmaker would prefer to use, though he'll use another BM paint if we request it. (Outside of the BM line, we would have to pay for the paint, so we want to stick with BM options, which are included in our cabinetry cost.) We need to decide this week.

Conceptually I like the idea of a low-VOC/"greener" paint for cabinets, since our built-ins that were painted three years ago with BM oil-based paint are *still* giving off smells (though they look lovely). But I haven't heard of too many people who've used this for cabinets. Anybody out there try it? If so, how has it weathered? (We looked at the cabinets he built for our friends, which are painted in Aura in a glossy finish of some sort---they look lovely, but they're brand new, so no clue how they will wear.)

We used the BM Satin Impervo. Very happy with it.

Artemis, I adore Aura paint in all its variations -- it's everywhere in my house -- but aren't you supposed to avoid Latex paints for moving cabinetry because temperature changes can make it stick? I'm no expert, but believe that to be the conventional wisdom about painting windows, cabinet drawers, doors etc. I love the matte Aura for Kitchens and Baths, but think it's meant for walls (?).

It seems like most folks use all-acrylics (no oil) like Cabinet Coat or BM Satin Impervo for cabinetry; I don't know much about low-VOC cabinet paints specifically, but they must be out there! Good luck, report back if/when you find something good.

BM interior Aura colors as exterior paint?

Color Stories is BenM's full spectrum color paint line. What that means is more colorants than usual in the formula and no black. If BenM is mixing their full spectrum colors to that widely, generally accepted full spectrum color mixing standard, then it's a color that's going to be more difficult to color match in another brand. Also depends on your tolerance for what constitutes a 'color match'. If you can decide that close enough will be good enough, then you'll be fine. If you must have a spot-on 'color match', you're gonna have a tougher time getting happy with the resulting color match in another brand. Color Stories colors can be mixed in Aura exterior. But since City Shadow is so dark, maybe your store doesn't carry the right exterior base to mix it. Guess I'm wondering why you think that color can only be mixed Aura interior?

Thanks---@beekeeperswife, did you use the water-based Satin Impervo, or the old oil-based? (We can't get the oil-based Impervo here anymore, though we might be able to finagle it through an auto shop---but it's trickier.)

The water-based Satin Impervo is also a latex, yes? I do read about people using that with some success.

I think the Aura he's talking about using is the Aura Semi-Gloss Waterborne Interior paint, which is listed as "acrylic with proprietary resins" (vs. Impervo, which is "acrylic latex"--not sure what the differences are?) Both have wood listed as a recommended use on the BM site, but I'm not sure how much stock to put in that since half their paints say that...

we did use oil.

If you are having a professional do it, perhaps check out Cabinet Coat. If you look on the painting forum it seems to be "the bomb". It sounds like it is harder to work with, but a pro should have no problem. Well, a real pro, that is! ;-)

I've not painted cabinets with Aura but I've painted almost everything else with it, from furniture to walls to trim to staircases. I love it.

If I were springing for cabinet re-painting though, I'd spend the buck and use Fine Paints of Europe, although I've also heard good things about Cabinet Coat.

Our cabinetmaker used a two part paint with a hardener component. The finish is very smooth and seems durable.

We used Aura paint on our island; it has been about 18 months since we started using the new kitchen and the paint has held up very well so far (and this is a household with 10 kids!). We did a base coat of the color wenge (a dark brown) and a top coat (maybe two?) of caliente (red). We did not prime the unpainted wood cabinet first, as Aura is self priming.

I first painted a kids play table with the same paint to be sure I liked the red, and that table gets a ton of use and abuse from the kids. The paint is still in great shape on that, too.
