8ft or 10ft ceiling?
Comments (27)If you've never been in a room that was badly proportioned due to too-high ceilings, you may not really believe there is such a thing. But there is, and it feels awful. Just very wrong -- but hard to put your finger on why. As a general rule, 9' is safe and comfortable for just about any room size. Higher ceilings can be are nice in large rooms; and 8' ceilings are wonderful for cozier spaces. One trick we've learned in this house is that a small area with lower ceilings at the entry to a larger space really 'opens up' the room with 8' ceilings. Our downstairs hallway has 7'6" ceilings, which we thought was a problem until we lived there a while. But now the 8' ceilings in the kitchen and den at either end feel much nicer, and the 'transition spaces' really function as transitions....See MoreKitchen Cabinets with 8 ft ceilings
Comments (3)I would be very cautious about getting the 42" cabinets if it's going to significantly lower your cabinets to the point where you are losing space between the countertop and the bottom of the cabinet,. Also, 42" cabinets I can be a bit of a problem if your ceiling isn't even. I think some companies make 39" cabinets which might be a good compromise. Comments (14)Here are a couple of photos of the way we transitioned our bowling alley. View of the bowling alley from the lower-ceilinged dining room: View of the transition wall (we also painted the high ceilings a dark brown to help the volume ceiling feel less intimidating in comparison): View from upstairs (you can see how the loft hung out over the foyer): View of the living room part of our bowling alley: Hope that helps a little....See MoreNeed pictures of 10ft ceilings with 42 inch kitchen cabinets
Comments (45)First, I think the 42/18 cabinet proportion works. But in general, I try to not take cabinets to a 10' ceiling. I did it in the photo I posted because they were spec houses and the builder wanted two different looks. I prefer the option where the cabinets do not go to the ceiling. I do not think the other option is as successful in regards to proportion (it feels top heavy). This is another example of where I took the cabinets to a 10' ceiling: I think this one is more successful because it's larger, has a mix of closed cabinets and open shelving and is balanced by a very large window. I think good scale and proportion can be overlooked in design in favor of the notion that cabinets HAVE to go to the ceiling. I would look at your plans and elevations with a critical eye to make sure you are choosing the best option for your space....See Moresue36
