I think that the latter choice would look better with what you have described your space to be. More than that, I think it will look amazing ! The way to make your floor "pop" less is to add several elements with the same intensity of colour - establish it as the norm in the room and things will blend and work together seamlessly.

I considered a slate floor and a porcelain tile that was similar to slate, but not as varied with an island in F&B French Gray with a glaze (black based). Don't know if you've seen my pictures, but they may help you decide. ?

I ended up going with ivory travertine instead. It runs through out numerous rooms/areas as well as the baths and I decided against the darker.

Hey Allison! I have studied your pics a zillion times!! I love your style--we have very much the same taste. In fact, I was looking for a F&B dealer after seeing your pics. Yours looks so awesome with it just being an island and with what you have in your kitchen. My concern is that I was wanting to do the entire cabinetry that way and there is a LOT of cabinetry in the room and I am afraid that would be too much French gray/blue/green. My multicolor slate floors are already in so I have to work with that. I also have a lot of greens in my house so I might lean slightly more greenish in the green/blue/gray for cabinetry if I was to do that. I am in such a quandary about what granite to pick and I am about to just chicken out and do the safe thing of cream cabinets since there are so many. Also, since I might be doing the slate up the wall and will have a different "rougher" look tan stone on the exterior wall, I am afraid to so my island a different color (although I have done this before) because there will be so much going on. Have looked at Kashmir White granite if I was to do the french gray look, or Verde Tunas (not my fave granite but it has the blue/green/gray mottled effect and it's kind of quiet for all I have going on) with the cream cabinets. I'll try to take some pics although they have covered up my floors with paper now and that's what I am trying to work with...,

just a comment: slate will compete with granite:
One of my customers bought a fix-it-upper house resently with a kitchen with slate on floor & splash, corian white counter top and formica on the upper bar, and sea foam green island! Yeah!
So, she went to stone yard and picked 3cm Millenium Cream granite: (unlike all the pictures that I have seen on google:) her granite was absent of all color: very white/cream with clear crystals. Almost no waves of variation and colorless; Unusual: had NO black or garnets or browns of any kind. Very clean looking.

So, her kitchen looks 100% better now, and her granite doesn't compete with her slate walls or floor. She is very happy. I need to get a picture from her!

Thanks. fyi, F&B French Gray is more green than blue. Mine also has a black based glaze which darkens it a bit. It would be more green without the glaze. I have several rooms painted the FG, will post link below for you to see.

Have you seen Wonbyherwits kitchen? It's a gorgeous green. Custom cabs she based on a magazine kitchen. I had torn out the same pages, but went another direction. Her cabinet color would look good with some slate flooring. Really depends on the coloring. I will link it also.

I'm not familiar with your situation - is it a remodel or a new build? Already have your cabinets being made but haven't picked colors? Do you have any links here with photos? I need to search your name.
