Pantry cabinet next to double ovens?

Would appreciate your opinions on the following:

Our current kitchen plan calls for a 12-inch deep, 24-inch wide, tall pantry cabinet placed on its side, next to a stack of double ovens. While functionally this works very well in our design, the thought ocurred to me that the heat from the ovens could warm the pantry and usually one would like the pantry to stay cool for food storage. Does anyone think this might be an issue, or am I over-analyzing this? We are planning on Thermador convection ovens, if it makes a difference. I'm pretty sure I've seen this set-up in pictures posted here as well as in magazines, but can't get a hold of any now.

MHO: Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. The ovens should be adequately insulated to not cause a problem. If ovens put off that much heat to the sides, they would damage their cabinets. Plus, you will have 2 layers of cabinet box between the oven and your pantry contents.

For what it's worth, we have a water heater in a cabinet next to our pantry cabinet in our current set-up. Our cereals and other boxed type foods get stale/soggy very quickly unless I keep them in tupperware containers. We never had this problem at our previous house (in the same town, so no climate changes) where the pantry cabinet was next to the double wall ovens (Kitchen Aid Superba).

I went with the Profile double-oven gas: here are my reasons. I like the smaller-size top oven for daily use, and the lower oven will only be used on occasion, so I'm ok with its location. (There's no room for a wall oven in my tiny kitchen -- and I have no plans to tear out cabinets and rearrange.) I'm a good cook, and I honed my skills on low-end domestic ranges because that's what was available: I don't need a commercial range to cook what I like, and I'm too busy with other aspects of my life to change my cooking style now. I also prefer not to deal with "pro" level BTUS and the ventilation complications they might add. I also am not willing to give up self-cleaning ovens -- which puts many pro-style ranges out of contention. I liked the slide-in setup and the angled control-knob location on the Profile, so that, and the price advantage, led me to choose it over the Cafe. Re: price, I bought mine from a local dealer, and I got the price down a bit by asking them to meet the ajmadison.com price. They didn't quite get there, but I was willing to pay a little extra for local sales/delivery/service reliability. Everyone's situation is a little different, but I found that the Profile slide-in fits best with my kitchen and the way I use it.

I'm glad we ended up with a 48" range. I like having a small oven and large oven. We seem to use the small oven about 90% of the time. The large oven comes in handy when needed. I like the idea of heating a smaller space for the majority of our oven use. My 87-year-old mother seems to use the "low" range ovens just fine. I think lifting a lasagna up to a higher oven would be a problem for her (especially since she broke her shoulder a few years ago and her range of motion has suffered because of it.) I'm all for convenience and would never get a low mw because I find them hard to see into and the controls hard to see. Neither of these problems are an issue with the range since the controls are at counter height and the racks slide out (and the viewing angle is better even without the racks pulled out--at least for the bottom rack.) We maximized our window space and sacrificed wall area in the process. I prefer using the limited space for tall cabinets for pantry items where hunting for things at eye level can be helpful. As weismann has pointed out, I have found the hood to be a good thing over the oven, especially when the kitchen gets over heated. I'm pretty sure the vent helps pull out the hot air from the oven vents. And visually, I really like a range. We have an older house and the black range seems to fit with the style better. I guess it would be considered the focal point. Good luck with your decision. You really can't go wrong (since both configurations seem to have many fans.)

We do. In an L plus island kitchen, I prefer that arrangement because it keeps the tall things at one end of the L. Otherwise, you would either have a tall block at each end of the L or in the midst of the L somewhere interrupting the counter space. Brickeye, Our oven cabinet is on the end of the run next to a door and that side of the cabinet doesn't feel warm when the oven is in use, so I doubt that there is any significant heat impact on refrigerator efficiency from it. The outside of the refrigerator warmer than ambient (though not necessarily by much if one has left proper air space) since the refrigerator cools itself by pumping heat out of the box to the air around it so it wouldn't increase the energy used by the ovens. We have had that arrangement for 28 years without denting the fridge door. (And I thought that I lived in a house with people who aren't ultra-gentle in using things.) I don't remember anyone ever opening the fridge door while someone else had the oven open - after all, one usually doesn't have the oven open for long. Our old fridge was single door swinging toward the oven so presumably had that risk. The replacement fridge, which is a few years old, is french door Samsung. I just checked - with the upper oven door open, the handle of the french door is what hits the oven door. The handle is pretty hefty and would be unlikely to dent. The lower oven door would be next to the freezer drawer well below the fridge door when open. Since our oven doors are mainly black glass with a small steel frame, I don't find it an overwhelming amount of stainless steel either.

You really need an extended stile or filler to keep the door from scraping the wall. It doesn't have to be much. 1/4" will do. And the cabinet above will need hinge restricter clips so it doesn't bang the wall.

The sides of our double oven cabinet do not get warm at all. I wouldn't worry about putting a pantry by it.

Kudos to your design for making the shallow pantry cabinet open on the side vs going with a narrow deep cabinet that, even with a pullout, isn't anywhere near as useful. We have that same shallow side opening cabinet by our fridge and love its utility.

If you are really worried, perhaps you could make that side cabinet an interesting display unit or shelving area since it sounds like it will be visible from certain angles. Or it could be cabinets with shelves for lesser-used pots and pans and then you could have some of those pantry items closer to where they'll be used.

The other thing you could do is turn it into your broom/step-ladder closet.

We have always had 36" inch pantry next to double ovens. We are in the midst of finalizing design this time around and the pantries and ovens will all be in the same exact spot again

alku05: where do you think I got the idea for a side-ways pantry:-). Thanks for posting your pic again: that is the one I had in mind when doing the design. Great ideas on this forum.
