I had to have a gas line run from the street to my house - $1000, then have the line run to the cooktop. I'd get another estimate, otherwise you won't know if it's reasonable. The cost of running the gas line in the house was rolled into all my plumbing costs, so I don't know how much it was.

It is worth every penny - I love my gas cooktop. I've had electric ranges for 30+ years and I hated every one of them. My mom taught me to cook on a gas range, and I'm so glad to have one now. I do have an induction burner, my spare, and it's OK, but I still love gas. I think induction will me my "old lady" cooktop, that way I won't burn the house down if I forget to turn it off!!

It cost us about $775 to run the gas line from one side of the house to the other - the plumber's rate was $70/hour for him and his helper. I'm in the mid-hudson valley region of NY.

Get a second estimate and find out exactly what they are charging you for.

I had two estimates to run a gasline in an almost DIRECT line from my furnace through an exposed ceiling in the basement right up to the stove. The first was $150-200 (sight unseen), but then he became unavailable so I was SOL, the next guy came and offered to do it for the cash price of $400- I was peeved off, but as thought I was in a huge rush- cuz granite was 'supposed' to be coming- I went for it. Still kicking myself for not getting another estimate. But good tradespeople seem to be heavily booked, so I handed over the cash (and that was in CANADIAN dollars- LOL) Up in British Columbia.

Definitely get another estimate- and if you have time, get another one... BTW, I do mystery shopping and one of my 'assignments' was to mystery shop an autobody repair chain- I went to 8 different shops, and got 8 different estimates ranging from $750 to $1400 for the EXACT same repair. So, you'd think I would know better! Sigh!

We had a lot of gas piping work done recently to accommodate a new gas rangetop, BBQ outlet on the patio, line to the fireplace for a gas insert, and new tankless water heater. Including the new 1-1/4 line to the street and the new high pressure gas meter our bill was 10 times yours, so don't feel bad :-)

Our gas contractor did a wonderful job. He priced everything pretty much flat rate. Minimum cast was $350 for the first 10 feet of gas piping and then $10/ft for additional piping no matter what the size or the number of fittings required.

So, for $500 we could have gotten 25 feet of black iron pipe run. It sounds like your run will be longer so I'd say the price is very much in line and possible a bargain depending on length. Don't go with anything less than a 3/4 inch size line. The gas tables may show 1/2 inch working OK but almost all manufacturers recommend 3/4 inch.

One other thing I'd add: if the contractor won't pull a permit and get the job inspected, look elsewhere.

It never occurred to me that a plumber would run the gas line. We had the gas company give the estimate, and one reason I haven't gotten a 2nd is that I wasn't sure who to call.

I dream of having a gas cooktop, but induction certainly has its advantages with old ladies and small children.

I had to run it about 50 feet and it ended up costing me around $450 (and that included the gas hose and connection parts). It had to go up into the attic and over to the location and then down to the ground and pop it in thru the wall to my stove. It has been very worth it to us.

Our house was 100% electric before our remodel. We brought in a gas line from the street to fuel our rangetop. The gas company charged $400 to run the gas to the house and put in a meter (it would have been less if we put in gas water heaters, dryer, hvac etc). Our contractor (who is a certified plumber and gas guy) charged $300 to run the line from the meter through the garage to the kitchen and get it ready for hook up. It was less than a day's work for one guy to run the line. We're in CA, but not in any of the big cities.

Price is probably reasonable, but you might save a couple hundred. On the other hand, you don't really want to sacrifice quality for price with the gas line.

Around here, plumbers have to do the gas lines. We had one run off a line running through the attic and he charged $300. That included installing the range when it arrived as well. It probably would have been a bit more if the ceiling and walls had not been open already. It took about an hour and a half.

And...for fun, before you do a price comparison between running a gas line and induction, see if you'll need electric upgrades for the induction. Your old electric hookups might not be adequate.

I am having a gas line run from my furnace to the kitchen on Friday. Where I live (Ontario, Canada) furnace contractors do this. I had 4 quotes and they ranged from $150.00 to $200.00. This is for a distance of about 30 feet and they are going to hook up my new range too.
Finally, something cheaper in Canada?

fori- I'd probably need to upgrade electrical for an induction cooktop, but I had a new breaker box put in when we moved into the house so I'm fairly certain the box will handle it. I'm having some other electrical work done soon, so I def. need to ask the guys about that.

Sammi2, I would get a second quote just for comparison sake. You also need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples specwise. If your cooktop requires a 3/4" line make sure they're quoting 3/4" and that they're connecting to a 3/4" line, that they're including a cutoff valve and connection to the cooktop. If you have to open up walls for their access, find out if that is included as well as the drywall repair. If someone else is doing it, then that has to be coordinated. This might also require a second trip for the plumber. So make sure all the issues are covered by your quote.

I had started out with 2 smoothtop electric ranges, yes, 2 because we had scratching issues with both, so the 3rd time, I said the heck with it, I'm switching to a gas range that I can at least clean without worrying that I'm wrecking the top of it every time.

Also, I had not cooked on a gas stove since early marriage 30 years ago, so I had to relearn it a little, but I can tell you both my DH and I both like to cook and we both really like the gas range.

Also, here, we were told that a plumber would have to install a gas line. We also just put in a gas fireplace so the gas line was already there for that so we kind of killed 2 birds with one stone. Hope this helps!

I live in the Midwest too. A tiny town, in the middle of nowhere, so there is no shopping around, if you can find someone who will make the trip, you pay the price, or go without. Good thing about it, is you know it will be done right. On the plus side, installing the pipe won't be any harder than when they built the house 40 years ago, but I can tell, it wasn't much fun back then either. Price for 96' of 1 1/4" pipe $1,024.00

Sammi, this should make you feel better. When we moved into this house (in NJ), I needed a gas line run for my dryer. It was December and all the plumbers I called were too busy, except for one that is known for high prices.

There was a gas line directly above the dryer. I just needed someone to put a T in and drop pipe down about a foot or two--and the plumber charged me 500 dollars for that! I was so upset, but I had no choice. I needed my dryer!

So, your 500 for running pipe from one end of the house to the other sounds like a bargain in comparison!

I want to move my gas stove from one side of the kitchen to the other (a 10 ft run) and the plumber quoted me $1K because they have to do a whole house test after they are done to comply with codes. We'll be doing it ourselves.

My plumber charged me $300 to run a gas line from the finished basement to the kitchen. There were already construction-related openings in the subflooring which he was able to take advantage of. His price also included hooking up the range top.

I'm in Ct - Gas co does not do the lines inside - I had to run aprox 30' of line which was $900 -

Some things that factor into pricing
- Where you are geographically located
- What TYPE of gas line are they running FLEX or black pipe - both are code, many feel the black pipe is preferable as nothing could penetrate that (think of someone installing a basement ceiling -)
-How many feet
_ if they need to return for hook up

I would advise against doing any gas line work by lay person - just not an area to scrimp or risk lives

Also they may say the shut off needs to be in a base cab/drawer - make sure you know your local codes - that is what they told us & I found out differently from the building dept
