cabinet design: drawers vs. doors w/ shelves
Comments (1)We have a pretty big vanity complex (see below), with a mix of upper and lower, doors and drawers. The frequently used items are all stored in the wall cabinets (mine in the one above the tambour, DH's in the one between the mirrors) and top row of drawers. Those have turned out to be the most easily accessible for us. So maxmimize what you can have within arms length without bending or stretching....See MoreDrawers vs Cabinet doors...
Comments (13)I have a combination. Along with the typical top drawer, I have doors under my kitchen sink, and doors under my cooktop. They are both 36" wide cabinets and directly across from each other, and they match. They also each have a smaller upper cabinet with a horizontally mounted glass door. For the cooktop, one door has one pull out for large kettles, and the other has two pull outs for the smaller kettles. I also have two small doors on the dish cabinet flanking a row of drawers. Both hide several narrow shelves for baking pans. Then I have one tall, narrow door on the end. This is 30" deep with a pull out for large cutting board. I also have doors on the tall storage, but they are all deep and large with assorted sizes of pull out trays. I wanted the stack to match, and drawers above your head don't work. The tall storage my my baking center also has doors, but the lower one houses the mixer lift. The end cabinet has a pullout for the waste basket - so it looks like a door but is not. The Island also has a trash pull out, one row of drawers and a door with shelves. DH keeps his cereal there, and wanted something adjustable in height. The baking center has two rows of drawers, and the two cabinets flanking the cooktop are all drawers. That makes 12 doors and 21 drawers and two garbage pull-outs. (and I'm not done painting all the doors yet, but I also have 21 upper doors)...See MoreBeaded cabinet door/drawer vs beaded frame
Comments (11)Wow CEFreeman, how unusual! I am proud to have a reclaimed kitchen in common. I believe this was the biggest project I have ever attempted, and DH never ever dreamed in his worst nightmare that he would have been putting a new finish on a kitchen full of cabinets! I finished my undergrad and did my graduate work in Lansing (in my 30's). Mason, being the county seat, was the next most important town around. I believe I went on a garden tour or antique shopping tour there with ladies from church. I loved that part of Michigan. I was born and finished high school in Detroit and lived in the thumb for most of my childhood. I am north of Detroit now. I will be happy to stand in as your "other" cousin Nancy if you ever need one in my area! I later realized I got "beadboard" and beaded inset all confused. That is what I get for writing posts a 1:57 (like 1:15 is much better)....See MoreAnother drawer question, 3-drawer vs 4-drawer cabinets?
Comments (3)If you only have two drawer bases, I would probably stick with 3 drawers in both. I do have one 4-drawer base--but I planned in advance what I was going to put in it & I have seven drawer bases. What do I put in the 4-drawer base? 24", the top three are the same size (same as top drawers everywhere else), the fourth/bottom is a bit deeper: * Flatware * Plastic Bags, Wraps, Wax Paper * Bread baskets & Plates * Misc Coffee & Tea supplies The rest are 3-drawer bases (1 shallow & 2 deep), 2-drawers + WD, & 1 drawer+ MW. The other shallow drawers hold: * Prep & Cooking Utensils (under cooktop) * Baking Tools & Utensils (in Baking Center) * Pot Holders (b/w cooktop & DOs) * Utensils for gluten-free foods * Linens & Placemats HTH!...See Moredesertsteph
