Multi-hued white subway backsplash?

A couple of years ago I bought 40 sq ft of Daltile Rittenhouse Square tile in Almond for $40 on craigslist. Also, I got about 30 sq ft of 4x4 crackle tile in white and 12 sq ft of a subway mosaic. I "think" I want to somehow make a backsplash marrying these tiles. One way I was thinking was to do a field using the almond and a combo of white subways and use the 4x4 squares and mosaic behind the range.

This idea is just forming, but I wanted to see if anyone has done or has pics of a multi-hue backsplash in a variety of whites. So far I've seen a thread where this was mentioned, but sadly no pictures.

The cabinet color is a custom mixed off white on the creamy/yellow end. The final countertops have not been picked yet, but we're "pretty" sure we're going with snowdrift granite.

Sounds like an interesting possibility. What are you thinking about a grout color? Maybe gray to pick up the color in your stone?

Are you trying to get different tones(sort of like tile before mass production)See Angie's thread(scroll all the way down then go up until you see cream square tiles)Angie made up a board of 2 cream tiles(I think 2 didn't work well)I would make up a large board, it's the best way to see how the variation looks.

Looking at these samples, it's my preference that "random" be in smaller formats. The patterns in larger tiles that best fit my aesthetic sense are the ones that have a pattern that I can say in words somehow: "each row moves X farther to the left", or something like that. It would seem that to me generally the larger the tile in these samples, the less formal and more in-your-face the wall becomes. The tiles in the nearly-same colorways are less aggressive and stay more in the background. But that's also true of tile in general--there is aggressive color and there is gentle color. At one time I had my heart set on a set of 4" square tiles from HD: off-red, off-green, light blue, golden yellow, and maybe a couple more. (Colors in last year's stock.) I wanted to do a pattern in these of some kind. But then, this was only to be under-cab for two sides of the room and behind the range, one of the decor ideas I enjoyed and then abandoned while waiting impatiently for months of construction to end. You see this kind of effect occasionally and it's always marked "not for the faint of heart." I had samples here and I arranged and rearranged them, but usually came back to a single line and not a whole wall of the multi-pattern. FYI, here are some of my inspiration photos. I love the red accents in this first one (my compliments to SoonerMagic--I hope it's OK that I'm re-posting this) but I'm just not sure if white subway tile might be too stark in our kitchen. Our cabs are white rather than off-white, there's no window above the sink and there won't be much painted wall showing. If we went with this color scheme we'd probably do something like BM Bennington Gray on the walls. Not certain if we'd use the contrasting grout or go with something whiter. I like how the beige-y backsplash in this 2nd photo adds a little more color to the room. Was thinking a subway tile in this shade might still work nicely with red accents (with paint in a similar beige shade): A third option would be to do a grayish paint (BM Gray Owl?) and go with a subway tile in carrara marble something like the one below (sorry--I'm not sure whose pic this is). The problem is I'm not sure that would coordinate well with the red in our dining room. It's also a cooler color scheme than I'd originally planned. Any thoughts? Our floors are hardwood, by the way--similar to the color in pic #2 or just a touch lighter. Thanks again for all the input!

olivertwist - thank you-it is my favorite thing in our kitchen. It was easy to install also (it comes on a mesh). I think they have 4 variations, so check the link to see if there is another that you like better. They are all quite different. Be sure you get samples in person. You can also 'enhance' it with a certain kind of sealer that deepens it but we chose not to. I wouldn't say a lot of green. When I look at it I see quite a bit of variation but if I had to pick one color that stood out I think the slate gray does because its darker than the others. There are red (some moving into a pink if you can believe that) tones, clay or an olive green color, orange/rust. I have attached a couple of close ups I just took. The first one is with flash and the under cabinet lights on. The next is with the uc lights off but the kitchen light is on. If you want one in natural light I can catch one tomorrow since it's already pitch dark out.

I think I prefer a very light gray to a white- not sure I am able to pick the 'right' shade of white. DH prefers a darker gray. I do realize that my choices here are not very 'light gray' and perhaps is part of the problem. rantontoo- yes, it is a shade... poor picture taking skills :) I have to agree that the shade of the white marble does not look good... after your comments I went back to look at it and it does seem like it is a lot whiter than my cabinets (and countertop of course). saints08 - I believe they are Rococo. Based on the comments I should focus on 2 or 3 or something else... but what could that something else be? Any suggestions? My budget is up to $20 per square feet. #2 sometimes looks good to me... like a light gray but sometimes it turns beige and I do not like that...it is a chameleon. Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. Old tile used to have variations in shading and I'd like something that mixes organically. I had seen Angie's post yesterday too. I saw her sample boards of the two together. I'm thinking to mix at least 3 colors. I checked my mosaic very closely and it appears that the two shapes are different shades too. The octagon is warmer white than the rectangle.

Unfortunately, this crackle tile was from Home Depot Expo. I got it when they were going out of business. I have tried looking for more tile online and found out the company the tile is from - Banan-Appeal was bought out and their old tile lines discontinued.

Kathec, I did not post when I first saw your thread because I did not have a specific suggestion. Clearly, I think it is a great idea! However, I am not sure how to help you, nor do I know of successful cases.
