Minimalist knobs or pulls for modern built in cabinets

These are not specifically kitchen cabinets but thought I'd post it here because this could apply to a kitchen.

We are having custom cabinets for storage built in several areas of our house.

I like the sleek modern look of cabinets that blend with the wall, essentially creating a wall of storage. I would prefer not to have pulls or knobs or at least have very low profile hardware, but don't want the cabinets to be difficult to open.

Any suggestions? Photos?

You're looking for "finger pulls" or "hidden pulls" I think. There are a few out there. Ikea sells one. Not sure how they work on doors rather than drawers though. There is a really nice one called Barenson Bravo in different colors here:

It sounds like you might want pressure/touch magnetic latches.

This is not a brand that I recommend. I'm only linking to give you an idea...but it will give you an idea where to start looking.

I have something similar on some doors but they are of low quality so they have not held up well. But if you buy a better quality, then they might be just what you are looking for.

I have the same pulls on all cabinets and drawers in my kitchen and I like it that way. My drawers vary from narrow to 36" wide. They all get one pull, and it is 5.25" wide. It's a good width- think "Goldilocks" - not too long, not too short, just right!

An option for non matching but almost would be Rejuvenation dish knobs with a backplate for the base (or tops) and originals for the other. (Warning: I used Rejuvenation's dish knobs in chrome for a previous remodel and the lower ones kept getting loose. Apparently toddlers do not like to see their image upside down and WILL try to correct them. Good knobs!) Amerock also carries a dish knob. Much cheaper. Neither is quite the same as your original.

Sounds like the only "fixture" that is chrome....is the sink faucet. I assume your appliances are stainless? I might change faucet to stainless. Black on the lights, brushed satin nickel on cabinet hardware feels less jumpy . Chrome hardware is fine,.......just feels a little glitz for "farmhouse" : ) jmho

"I think the premise is to have pulls be *no more than* 1/3 the drawer length." I think designers invent "rules" like this just to have rules. I have never paid much attention to such nonsense. There is a limit, of course, to how wide pulls can be. You don't want them to interfere with drawer operation. Other than that, anything that looks good to you is just fine. As for variations in length, don't worry about it. There is no rule that all pulls have to be the same size, although the same general design is good. One thing about pantry pulls. You are probably going to be opening pantry doors with arms full of groceries, so a pull you can operate with an elbow, wrist, knee, or one pinky finger is a good choice.

txpepper, my contractor didn't think the pressure/touch magnetic latches would work because the cabinets are so tall. I think we are going to try them anyway and see how they do. I hope they work!

jabelone, I am using a finger pull from Sugatsune on all my kitchen cabinets.

I'm considering a finger pull from Ikea for the cabinets in two bedrooms. I actually prefer the Ikea pulls because they are so discreet but they didn't work for my kitchen cabinets because of the size and the way they are installed.

You might like the Strecket or Grip handles from IKEA. We considered these for the kitchen but in the end wanted something more substantial. For cabinets that aren't used a lot, they would be minimal and modern.

jakebedy, yes, the Strecket pulls are the ones we are going to go with for the bedroom closet doors. I actually liked them for the kitchen but they didn't work installation-wise on my cabinets.

I forgot to comment that your cabinets look gorgeous!

If your CabGuy can mount the magnetic latches precisely (which from your pics, it looks like he does very nice work), then it seems that you could use three to four latches per unit and get them to work.

Since they are all mounted on the inside, it wouldn't hurt to try them on one unit and give them a good workout for a week.

By the way....I'm suffering very serious envy of your Sugatsune pulls. : ) Which ones are you using?

Thanks, Pepper. Yes, I'm blessed to be working with some talented craftsmen.

My cabinet maker got them for me, so I'm not sure of the exact model, but here's a link to the one I think he used. It comes in various sizes.

About the magnetic latches, I didn't think I could use more than one latch on each cabinet door. Don't you press on the spot where the latch is to open it? So if you had more than one latch would you have to press on all the places where there are latches? Or does just pressing anywhere on the door cause all the latches to unlatch at the same time? Hope this makes sense!

Those pulls are what I'm looking at using...or something similar. I was looking at the Strecket pulls because I liked that they were afixed on the backside of the door/panel...but I didn't like the aluminum material. But because of the way they are mounted, is this the reason you nixed them?

With regard to the mag latches....yes, you press against the door to activate the spring latch and in theory, you should be able to press anywhere on the door.

I would think if the latches are all lined up exactly, I don't see why two or more wouldn't work.

I would be interested in an update if you decide to do a test run.

Yes, the way they were mounted was the reason we didn't use them. I don't know the specifics, only that my cabinet maker said he couldn't use them because the mounting wouldn't work with the cabinets as they were made.
