Recommendations for a LARGE double-bowl ss sink?

I've decided to get a Stainless steel undermount sink and I want to get a double bowl (can't live without) 60/40 or 70/30 configuration that has a quite spacious large bowl. My cabinets are going to be custom and I'm not limited on cabinet size for the sink. I was about to order the Elkay 3520 (has 18x20 large bowl), but after reading some posts from others I'm concerned about the 10 inch depth of the large bowl being too deep. I do have some back aches occassionally and I do wash alot of veggies, lettuce etc at my sink. I also want a sink that has a satin finish (not like the polished finish of the Blancowave which comes in different depths, but I am reluctant to buy because of the finish - unless someone reassures me about that).

We have the Elkay 3520 and we LOVE it. We really like the fact that the large bowl is deep. We tend to scrub our dishes on an angle and let them soak flat. This sink is great for both tasks. I'm 5'7 and DH is 6'3 though so I'm not sure if our height makes a difference - it's no big deal for either of us to reach down there.

DH has a very bad back and hasn't complained once.

Whether the depth will be an issue for you depends on height, arm length, how far back the sink is mounted from the edge of the counter, and type of installation (under or over mount). You cannot do much about the first two, so try one or more of the following:
1. Mount the sink as close to the counter edge as possible...definitely no more than 3" if at all possible
Get a sink grid...it lifts the bottom of the sink approx 1" (b/c the grid is approx 1" tall). If you need the extra inch, you can remove the grid...but at 10" deep, I doubt you'll need to.
Get an over mount/drop-in sink. The true depth of an under mount sink is the sink's depth + the thickness of your countertop material. So, if you overmount/drop it in, you don't have that extra depth.

However, an overmount/drop-in sink is not generally aesthetically pleasing! An overmount/drop-in can also be more difficult to keep clean b/c of the grunge that collects along the rim.

Another option is a flush-mount where the sink is mounted flush with the surface of the counter...but I don't know much about it.

Of the above, I recommend the first two and not the third. But, that's my personal preference.

Now, here's my sink, a 16-gauge Ticor sink, S405D. It's in a 36" sink base. It comes with both sink grids plus you can now get a cutting board to fit over the large bowl (they didn't have the cutting board when I ordered mine, it's fairly new.)

Its current price on Galaxy Tool Supply (GTS) (where I got mine) is: $249.99 and Free Shipping. You can sometimes get Ticor sinks for even less if you bid on one on eBay at GTS' eBay store, but check to be sure your final cost includes shipping (if it's not free on eBay).

I will say, though, that I replaced the strainer in the small bowl with a Kohler DuoStrainer and the one in the large bowl w/a garbage disposal (InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist) and the Kohler Disposal Flange. Others have used the included strainers and are satisfied, but I had used "standard" strainers all my life and didn't like the fact that they usually didn't seal and wouldn't stay open or closed. So, I spent extra $$ and got the DuoStrainer...it was highly recommended here at the time. I was not disappointed...the DuoStrainer is the best strainer I've ever had...solid & very functional. (I also purchased a DuoStrainer for my Kohler prep sink.)

Ok, several points from me. First, wall mount faucets are, IMO, a very bad idea. They have all but disappeared from new construction, and have a very limited selection of faucet styles available. The reason: Repair. When it starts to leak (and ALL faucets leak eventually), it can be a major job to replace, as sheet rock removal is generally required, because the leak often damages the wall before it is noticed. A faucet in the countertop is a breeze to replace, a simple DIY job. Second, it is often thought the equal double sink is the least functional type. The reason is that unless they are huge, neither side is large enough to wash the largest pots you have. My sink, a Kindred BUC2233/10RK/E is an unequal double, and the large side is big enough to soak-flat-my large cookie sheets (13"x18") and easily holds my 20 quart stock pot. My previous equal double could not come close to either task. You should measure your largest items and see if they will fit in the sink you propose. BTW, my sink fits in a 36" cabinet. Lastly, avoid all zero radius sinks. They are a nuisance to clean, so much so they are prohibited in commercial kitchens. red lover, I bought the blancowave sink in the link for my pending remodel. Got a deal on ebay, so went ahead and bought it. After just looking at it lying there in the box for a few weeks whispering to me how much I would like to be using it, I finally caved and jerry-rigged an installation in the non-remodeled kitchen over the weekend. (It is an undermount sink, I have laminate counters, it is supposed to need a 42" sink base, I have 36 inches, the hole in the counter for the existing sink was totally the wrong size and shape, blah blah whatever. watch me make it work anyway). So far, I love it. The large side is big enough to hold my largest baking sheet, roasting pan, or largest skillet with handle; the small side is still big enough for a colander or stockpot. Believe me, there are NO plumbing issues involved. What MAY be an issue is finding a hardware store--or other source--for the parts you need to do a changeover. The best thing you can do for yourself is get down and climb under your present sink, the neighbor's sink, your family member's sinks, and familiarize yourself with the plumbing that's under there !! While you're down there, check for leaks, and use a ruler/tape measure to get an idea of sizes. Bathroom sinks are usually 1 1/4" diameter thinwall pipe; the tub/shower and the kitchen sink are, or should be, 1 1/2". One thing to remember: the 1 1/2" thinwall pipe hooked directly to the bottom of your sink, and tied into the "S" or "P" traps under there, is NOT NOT NOT the same as the 1 1/2" drain piping; HOWEVER--there are adapters to mate the thinwall to the heavier piping. By the way, you ARE gonna go to the store and find out what a "P" or "S" trap is, aincha?? Dont be afraid to ask Q's, and do realize many of the guys you ask are about as ignorant as you are when it comes to plumbing....many--not all of 'em. THEN: when you find somebody who sounds like (s)he can help you do this project, and they put down on paper the parts you need, the best thing you can do is repeat the process--go find somebody else at another store who can do likewise, and then compare the parts recommended, &c. Maybe this soundz like plumbing 101--you're right, it is. Anything else spellz disaster in the making, not to mention the resultant feeling you bin ripped off and jerked around, and that you coulda done a better job yourself.... if only.... you'd taken to heart the suggestion of: kenn 1RmSchlHse millersport oHIo -- there's a time and place for spontaneity....

I have a similar question but am about to post separately because I need a 30" cabinet and my double sink options are more limited as a result. I also want a 65/35 or 70/30 or even 80/20 because I want a bigger main basin and a breakaway sink for a 2nd cook next to it. For what it's worth we have a 50/50 double sink now, each basin 14x16 and around 8 deep, and it's fine but just slightly narrow for our bigger pans, which is why I want to move to at least 60/40 if not more uneven. Another reason I want a double sink is that we tend not to dishwash plastic and it builds up in the sink so without a double basin it slows us down between hand washings of plastic in one of the basins. Not an ideal reason to choose a sink (to let dishes pile up!) but a realistic thing to consider.

I got a 60/40, 16-gauge sink from ticor that I love. The price shown now is less than when I bought back in July. It arrived in 3 days, free shipping. the grids are free, and I paid extra ($20 maybe?) for the cutting board. Now that I think of it - that must be why it was more - duh. I'm still admiring it daily.

I wanted a large sink also as I tend to do a lot of handwashing. I have a dishwasher but have not used it in 17 years.

I was looking at the Blancowave 440242 but decide to go with the Ticor S105-8. It is the model that most closely matches the Wave.

I lost a few inches in width and have a 9/7" bowl depth rather than the 10/7" like the Blanco, but the increased HUGE amount of savings, plus the increased metal thickness sold me on the Ticor.

I also went with the brushed rim option so it has the same finish like the bowls.

Thanks Buehl for the pics of your sink. That's very helpful. I had never heard of the Ticor sinks before and it sounds like a good way to save some money to spend on my granite. :)

When it comes to ss, don't overlook the option of custom fabrication. This way, you could really get *whatever* you wanted.
