Under Cabinet Lighting: Where's the switch?
Comments (15)My cabs all have xenon light bars in varying configurations of 2 and 3 lights per bar. LIke Warmfridge's set up, each bar has it's own on/off and high/low switch. Still, I primarily control all kitchen lights by means of a wall panel at the entrance to the kitchen. There are 6 switches with dimmer controls for all my lights: ceiling cans, pendant, undercab, above cab and in-cab. Sometimes I get a kick out of just playing with panel switches and dimmers just to see the different lighting effects in the kitchen. :-)...See MoreUnder cabinet light above sink with switch needed
Comments (1)How about using led? EW profile, maxlite, UniLume are possible choices. They are all dimmable. The UniLume has it's own on off switch....See Moreunder cabinet light fluorescent or LED? Suggestion pls!!
Comments (14)We found it helpful when considering this choice to think about the color of the lighting. Fluorescents are "cold," and will not show the true color of your countertop or backsplash. That may not be important to you, but if you're installing $$$ granite or quartz, please spend the extra money on LEDs so you can enjoy your beautiful surfaces and appreciate their true colors. We chose Kichler LEDs for our kitchen and put fluorescents in the DR (because we don't spend a lot of time in there). Our LED UCLs are now failing (18 months after installation) and our lighting provider has agreed to provide replacement fixtures (but not installation) for free. I'm more than a little annoyed, but still love my LED UCLs....See MoreJust bought a new house & can't find under mount cabinet light switch
Comments (9)Those pictures are useful. It looks like the fixtures are 120V, which means that they use regular power, not a transformer. Whoever put them in did an illegal installation that violates building code: 1. You can't have the wire nut connections outside of an electrical box 2. The type of wire used can't be put inside walls This poses a potential fire and shock hazard, and you should have the associated wiring traced and removed. Given the sketchy way they are installed, I suspect that somewhere that lamp cord is tied into a switch circuit (again, this would be a code violation). Perhaps the wiring to that switch has come undone or failed and that is why the lamps don't turn on. It's unfortunate, but, if you want such lighting in that location, you should have the existing lamps removed and replaced with a proper and safe lighting installation. In addition, if the former owner would do something like that, there could be other badly done wiring elsewhere that you should be on the lookout for. Your best bet might be to hire an electrician to remove this mess in the kitchen and do an inspection for other problems while he is there. I know you just wanted to figure out how to turn on the lamps, and now I am giving you bad news, but it's best you know. Good luck....See MoreRelated Professionals
