Meat thermometer - what do you recommend?

I'm not much of a cook but since my new kitchen is nearly complete with double ovens, i want to start using them. What kind of digital meat thermometer shall I buy? Those of you who are expert home cooks, would you recommend one for someone who wants to make roast beef for the first time in life?

Get one that uses an electronic probe at the end of a cable that can be left in the meat throughout cooking.

Usually around $30 or so.

We need a new one. We had the old style mercury with numbers, not the digital. Not sure what I want to replace it with. I hesitate somewhat to go digital, thinking I will have more trouble with it. But I would like to have a minimum/maximum feature that is accurate and reliable. Do you use something you are happy with?

HmmmÂ.funny I should read this as I'm in the final hours of cooking a pork butt on the grill for pulled pork. I have a fairly decent instant read thermometer at home but I'm at my weekend lake place for Labor Day and the one I have here (just bought this year because the other one I had was a POS) leaves something to be desired. So far I haven't been able to bring myself to buy a thermapen but maybe I should just end the chronic misery of an unreliable meat thermometer once and for all. I could put it in the tote bag I carry back and forth with me - as I'm sure once I have one I will never want to use anything else and I surely do not want to buy two of them.

What instant-read thermometer do you use?

For instant-reads: After lousy experience with both Polder (only in that it wasn't waterproof as advertised) and Taylor (which takes forrrrevvverrrr to get a reading) I decided my cheapo Progressive dial type is just fine. I've been tempted by the Thermopen since Cook's Illustrated swears by one of the models, but I just can't find fault in my Progressive. For roasts, however, I prefer a leave-in-the-oven thermometer, and I'm quite satisfied with my Williams Sonoma one (rebranded Maverick I believe) in that it tells temp well, but the extra bells and whistles are useless. For example the presets - 180 deg for poultry? In my neck of the woods chicken is done (and still moist) long before that. And to be told the roast will be done in 15 minutes - 45 minutes - 10 minutes - 25 minutes doesn't do me much good, either.

Well, these are hard to find, but I just ordered this one: ChefAlarm by ThermoWorks - (Black) Sold by ThermoWorks If you have experience with it, please let me know. The reviews were all good on Amazon. It's not cheap, but if I can set my own times instead of preset ones, I'm happy, and this doesn't have all those taste settings.
