I'm currently planning my kitchen makeover and I considered these for an area where I am replacing the upper and lower cabs in a 4 ft corner next to my fridge. By losing the small countertop area in that spot, I'll be able to put in 2 2ft x 2ft pantry units. Since the entire point of the reno is to maximize my usable space I decided pullouts would be defeating the purpose. While I think they are perfect for smaller areas that might go unused, I figured out that putting them in an area that has space available for full size shelves would waste about 1/3 to 1/4 of the space I was trying to gain. I also figured out that using pullout shelves, while convenient, also waste a bit of space that could be saved by using fixed shelves. So I decided to compromise there and go with 2 fixed shelves and two pullout shelves in each unit. I also ordered 2 pullout basket shelves as an extra. Seems its standard to just put in 4 shelves in this size cupboard, but my mom has the same style in her home and I just thought the shelves were way too far apart and wasted space that could be utilized by adding another shelf. Also, have noticed that a lot of installs put the lower shelf right at the bottom which also seems like a waste of space if you are space challenged. By placing the lowest shelf just 5-6 inches from the bottom, it effectively gives you and extra storage area perfect for larger platters, sheet pans, etc. and helps eliminate that extra empty top area.

Dh put our IKEA cabinets together for our laundry room. I believe the hinges are specific to the IKEA doors which have indentations for the hinges to snap into (no screws.) I think you'd have a hard time using an IKEA hinge on a non-IKEA door (unless someone was able to rout out the specific spots.) We used wider opening hinges on cabinets with pullouts. I'm linking to IKEA hinges below. The last one opens wider than the 2 sets just before it. Ditto what scrappy25 says about separate pull outs vs one big pull out. My advice is to really think about the cabinets objectively rather than being swayed by something that seems cool. We have 2 tall IKEA cabinets in our laundry room. Both are 15 in. wide and 24 in. deep. I was sure I wanted the regular pull out and the cleaning pull until it came time to actually purchase them. Then when I thought about the advantages/disadvantages I totally changed my mind. For the storage cabinet I realized I wanted the full front on view that the door and individual pull outs provided. I didn't want to have a big panel in my face as I pulled open the shelves. I wanted to be able to place the shelves where I decided rather than having some predetermined. I didn't want to have to step to the side to view the contents. I didn't want to have to pull out something weighty to access one item. As far as the cleaning cabinet went I realized that grabbing items out of it was easy without the pull out. I preferred storing our vacuum on the sturdy floor instead of a pull out shelf. We ended up leaving the cabinet empty and then we mounted a vacuum hose holder on one side of the cabinet and a small pull out on the other side for cleaning supplies and vacuum parts. I'm very happy with it--and again, I'm glad I don't have a large pull out panel I have to work around. I prefer configuring cabinets myself than having a less flexible set up. When deciding on the side to put the hinges, if you go with the door, make sure the fridge won't block your ability to open the door wide enough for the pull outs. Mamma dukes, I'm not quite understanding. Currently, on the wall left of the door are the broom hooks, which can move. On the other side of the wall are the integrated refrigerator and freezer of the new kitchen. Oh!! I get it now. That's what you meant--the outside. You meant to open up the wall? Couldn't be done anyway, because it's holding up the stairs. They couldn't even bring in a new outlet in that wall. Thanks for the idea, though. Dapitou, the slatwall is an interesting idea, but I'm worried it would just add bulk pushing into the center walking space without giving me much that I can't get from the shelving I already have. I can see that in a garage it's really useful for keeping the floor clear of feet, but how would you use it in a narrow space to make the most of the volume? B'more, I like the idea of hooks for the chairs. Maybe even bicycle hooks. I'd have to pad them, but I think that's better than just standing them on their sides. Rather than slatwall, there's no reason I can't put the hooks and shelves right into the wall. I don't know if I need differing depths of shelves, but it's certainly something to look at! I never even thought of a hook for the vacuum hose. That's a great idea. Actually...these slatwall and hook recommendations are making me think of things like hanging tools, as well. Over in the short area, I could put up hooks for the power tools, rasps and other assorted tools that I hate rummaging for since I use them so little. Mostly, I use the screwdriver and pliers that live in the bottom drawer in the kitchen. :) Eliminating the tool box makes more room for the chairs and uses a difficult piece of wall. Just an Osterizer (assuming you wouldn't want to use the Cuisinart), but it needs a home too! It's currently in a box on the floor in the kitchen. But...I could just put the margarita maker in the pantry, or even unbox it and put it in a drawer... :D

Cheryl--girl, how much cooking are you doing that you need two dishwashers? Haha, just teasing--I think it's great that you're getting what you want in your kitchen!! I agree that it would be smart to put at least one outlet in your utility closet. It's less expensive to do it now than have the electrician make a separate trip out later. I'm hoping you'll post a reveal when your kitchen's finished!! And maybe some before and during photos? I've been dealing with my own kitchen nightmare this week. I bought this old fixer upper and the whole electrical system is fading fast. The other day we plugged a microwave into an "iffy" outlet and tripped the circuit. Unfortunately, it blew every outlet on the wall, including the one for the refrigerator! Once I confirmed there was no coming back to life for those outlets, we had to find an alternative outlet for the fridge. I decided the safest thing to do was to plug it into an outlet on a wall where we get consistent power and never trip the circuit breaker...so now we have a very attractive (haha!) orange extension cord going from the kitchen through the middle of the living room. OK, hideous, but we have cold food. I can't afford to rewire the whole house until September, so until then, it is what it is. Joy (my daughter) is freaking out because in two weeks we're having a garden party and about 15 ladies will be here. I told her our friends will still love us despite the orange extension cord. :-) practigal--my "dust buster" is actually a Dirt Devil. I love it! Hey, do you guys all know about "whole house surge protection"? Basically, for not a huge cost, your electrician can do something at the electrical panel (don't ask me the specifics, I'm not an electrician) that makes every outlet in your house a surge protector! You never have to plug your electronics into a surge protector again. An electrician over on the electrical wiring forum told me about it, and I checked it out, and when I get my house rewired in September, I'm definitely getting it!
