Viking Wall Oven - noisy fan on all the time?

I've posted this on the appliances forum, but I don't think people visit there as much as they do here.

I just had a Viking wall oven DEDO530 (Designer Series premium double oven) installed Wednesday. When I turn the oven on to bake, as soon as I turn the temperature knob there is a loud fan noise that goes on & does not go off until the oven is off. It seems to do the same thing on convection or anything else - but I did my main test on just the basic "bake."

Then before I turned around it was Thanksgiving, of course, so I have no one to call and ask if this is normal. I doubt whether anyone will be available at Viking today (Friday) eithr, but I'm hoping to hear back from the appliance store where I bought it.

To make things worse, it's not a steady fan noise, it also has a slightly irregular whistle sound. I've never had a an electric oven before - always gas, so I don't know what to expect.

The manual says that the fan will be on throughout the "clean" cycle, which leaves me to believe that if the fan is supposed to be on at all other times they'd mention it somewhere, but they don't.

Is this normal?

Just moved into a home with a total viking kitchen. Our oven whistle and whine is so disturbing that I have to pre cook when entertaining, so that I don't have to keep explaining about the noise. The Viking service person made a call and explained that people who have Vikings have chefs, and the noise doesn't bother them. I can't leave the door open to shorten whistle time, as our air conditioning bills are high. Turned oven off 20 minutes ago---still whining!

I don't know about this particular model, but my wall oven (Bosch) does exactly the same thing, and I always assumed it was normal, although the fan on the Bosch wall ovens is not particularly loud, just background noise.

@dadoes@Michael Mais: I'll second what dadoes said. Can you call the retailer and explain that your brand-new range isn't working? I would think they have some avenue with Thermador to return it as a bad unit -- which might put some heat on Thermador to get a tech out to you. Other options if you can't get to the plug: 1)power cycle the range using the breaker, 2)Get the oven up a reasonably hot temp (450) and then turn it off and see if it unsticks the thermostatic fan switch. 3)Disconnect it from the wifi*/remote control if it has that feature. There may be a "reset" option in the range menu that will do this. 4)If not connected to wifi -- connect it and see if it downloads a firmware upgrade. *My range is the "connected" version. When I connected it to the wifi/phone last year there was an annoying loud clicking noise. that would go on incessantly -- whether we were using it or not. When I disconnected it from the wifi it would stop. This is with no cooking going on. I repeated this a few times with the same results. I suspected it's some software/firmware bug and decided to wait to call in the warranty service to give them time to get a fix. Also hoping in part hoping that the fan noise might have a new fix.

What would you do... KA or Viking wall oven & micro?

I'd consider other brands. KA ovens in the past at least have had problems with the top heating element coming on in various baking modes and burning the tops of things and KA claiming that was how it was supposed to work. Don't know if that's been fixed in current models. Also, self-cleaning has burned out control boards. I have a KA fridge and DW which I'm very pleased with but based on what I've read, I'd stay away from their ovens. Similarly, from what I've read about Viking in general, I'd stay away from them.

Does anyone have a new Viking Wall Oven that runs 2 1/2 hours after turn off? Since our Congress passed that Energy Bill that banned vented ovens, are all this way? Am having a Wolf installed in our mountain place next month, will it be that way as well?

I have been fighting with Viking over their French Door Wall oven since the middle of 2022! Steam and smoke escape from between the French doors. My cabinetry above gets soaking wet from the steam, and black from the smoke. The control panel gets so hot that I need oven mitts to turn the dials. Viking has sent out repairmen 7 times changing out screws and gaskets, obviously stringing me along while knowing their product is defective. The service workers that came out the last few times said that Viking had a problem with this model, and that they were working on it. The last repairman said it was a fire hazard. I was sent a new venting type apparatus a year ago that couldn’t be installed because i was told Viking still needed to develop another new part to go with it. At the end of last year they sent me replacement French doors. Servicemen came to install the door last Monday, but they wanted me to sign a waiver that if they damaged by cabinetry that they wouldn’t be liable. Viking also refused to be liable. They told me I’d have to hire my own people to remove the oven so it could be repaired, then re-install it. So not only does Viking sell inferior products, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I’m contact the Better Business Bureau next. By the way, the stand alone freezer I purchased from them also needed to be replaced.

We have a new single 27" Viking wall oven. It does make a fan-type sound when you first put it on Bake (sounds the same in Convection Bake), but it is not at all loud or annoying, and no whistle sound. I would even describe it as quiet. I think you should have someone check it out.

I do not have a Viking so can not tell what is normal but at the price of a Viking you should not hear the fan. I have a GE Profile and unless you open the door and look in you can not hear it running.

On our new Viking VESO5301 the fan cycles on and off, and relays audibly click. Not not particularly loud or annoying. Its just the way it is. It is a little noisier than our Dacor range - especially the relay clicks.

BTW, I am not sure we've ever used standard bake on it. We use convection for everything.

I have a Viking Dble wall oven and have the same experience - it happens on all cycles, but the convection fans are really loud. I read about this here, before making the decision but also remember reading that it wasn't that bad, and that most ovens do the same thing - to keep the electronics from overheating. At first it didn't bother me, but after cooking for 2 days for T-day - OMG, it is really annoying. I think it only bothers me when I'm tired though. As soon as I turn the oven on and hear it, I have this feeling of dread - the same noise, again. A trick for after you've finished cooking - leave the door open for a bit. That seems to shorten the cooling cycle after you've finished cooking. One thing I noticed, when i've opened the door while cooking, the fan seems to inhale the smoke and heat, like an exhaust fan or OTR fan. I guess that's a good thing, but I don't have electronics on mine - jobs the old-fashioned knobs. Not sure why they need cooling off.

I'm trying to get over it, but it is still a pain. I have to say though, the thing cooks like a champ! I used the Convection Roast feature - a BEAUTIFUL, evenly browned turkey, with no basting, in 1.5 hours!!! It was 15lbs and tasted amazingly good - not dry either.

Yesterday I looked at the ovens while walking into the kitchen, pointed to them, smiled and said, "YOU ROCK!!!!"

I love my ovens, and the Induction Cooktop. My only complaint is that the oven doesn't shut off when the timer goes off. Trade-offs, I guess. I'm glad to have the C-Bake - making CC cookies and maybe bread later today.

Well, my appliance store has a call in to Viking, so when the service guy comes out I'll see what he says. I can understand that a fan goes on, but this one sounds as noisy as a dishwasher. Also, it's not a steady hum. It seems to be whining and straining.

The ovens seem to have a few idiosyncracies - when I have both oven lights on (pushed the on button) and I open the top oven, the light in the lower oven goes out, but turns on again when I close the upper oven. This is not a deal breaker, just weird.

I felt like I was so close to the end of this project, and yet here I am. Did I mention that on Wednesday they realaied that I need a new sub-panel for the electricity, but I can skip that since it turns out that I also need to have new electrical service brought in to the house - for $2,200 or so? And then they can finish up the final electrical stuff. And then they can hook up most of the other stuff and I can find out what's wrong with all the other appliances & lights.

Can't help you with the noisy oven but...all that heat from the oven is eventually going to dissipate into the room anyway. Leaving the oven door closed just slows the process.

We had the same problem and had to replace the cooling fans, it’s super quiet now!

just bought 36” viking range, the oven fan makes noise while baking and over an hour after its off, technision is coming over to check it out, it seems they cant do nothing about the noise, gives me headache, warm up my kitchen and the backsplash gets extremely hot. very bad job of building this range. i am sending it back if it doesn’t get fixed
