Comments (26)Hi Amberley -- Thank you or your kind words. It is an old-house renovation/addition. We bumped out the back for the kitchen, family room, mudroom and butler pantry. The upstairs is over the new garage and we added closets, bedroom and baths upstairs there. We really tried to make it consistent with an old house and have a fair share of crooked hallways, which I find charming, due to funky walls and funny chimneys. Once a few more things are done and before the boxes arrive I'll post a more pictures. I love love love the marble and hope you find a way to make it work. I too was put off by the 'grayness' in carrara -- but the calacatta d'oro is just like creamy ice cream colored and the veining doesn't 'bleed' or color the surrounding areas like carrara does. Sewer gas is horrid --during the renovation we found out that our toilet hadn't been vented. It explained a whole lot of issues we'd had with it -- sewer gas being one of them. Good luck with that mess. Have you tried calling fabricators directly? We had to buy slabs and couldn't cut off a chunk so maybe a fabricator would have a scrap from a previous job that you could use for your baking area. I managed to get enough 'left-over' from the kitchen/bath/butler pantry to use for the laundry room so there is hope. ahne b...See MoreCan a layman hone marble if it is polished?
Comments (26)I agree with Bill V--I noticed that even the action of pouring vinegar on the black marble tiles caused a blotchy look. When I 'honed' multiple tiles, I put them in a vinegar bath, so that all surfaces were exposed at the same time. After a set amount of time (5 minutes, I think), I rinsed the tile with clear water, then dipped it in a baking soda bath to neutralize the acid, and followed by rinsing again in clear water. Then wet-sanded and polished the tile to a finish that I liked. I used these tiles on a small counter, 22"x50", and used the scraps on a backsplash mosaic. Doing a kitchen with lots of counter space would be very time consuming. The carrara slab was an already-etched, second-hand find. Because of that, and the difficulty of getting an even etch without a 'vinegar bath', I used only the sanding method on it. The slab was too big for me to take outside, and even with a filter canister on the sander, it produced a lot of fine dust. When experimenting with etching, I laid a vinegar-soaked paper towel on one of the 12x12 tiles. It etched a really neat 'snakeskin' pattern into the tile. I've seen other GW members, experimenting with etching marble, mention the 'paper towel effect,' too. After I polished the tile, it was really neat--almost like a fossil. I loved it, but my husband preferred the smooth finish, AND I was afraid that if I had to sand out any new etches, the pattern would no longer look uniform. So I continue to use that tile as a sample beside my stove. LOL, Bill, haven't noticed any salad smell, but sanding produces a sulfur(?) smell. Also, I dropped some marble chips into a jar of vinegar, and grew some beautiful calcium crystals. If your kid is looking for a science-fair experiment, that's an easy one!...See MoreFinished Kitchen: Cherry, Soapstone, Marble
Comments (54)Oh, how beautiful! I'm so excited b/c I just got a call YESTERDAY from my cabinet maker saying that he's got my cherry kitchen cabinets built and set up, ready for me to come "walk thru" today! I've had white cabinets with an oak floor since 1984 and am switching to cherry and keeping the same oak floor. 'Have been nervous about how it will look with so much stained wood. You've made my day and also inspired me! Question: Do you find one recessed light above your sink adequate lighting at night? I'm finding that I need more light as I age (55 now). My GC has enouraged a pendant over the sink, but I like your recessed light b/c it doesn't block the view....See MoreStatuary Marble Backsplash
Comments (8)I have statuary bricks from a quarry in Alabama. The veining is not as dark as alku's and the color of the tile ranges from white to pale gray. Some of them also have a bit of tan. I have honed charcoal counters with wisps of white and the statuary looks great with the counter. Not that I'm biased or anything. Here's some pics of my almost finished kitchen. We still need to do some painting, add light rails and change out the hinges. The pictures have some weird reflections but they are pretty representative of the look of the tile....See Morepartyof7
