Seattle cabinet makers - any recs?
Comments (29)My former cabinet guy kept saying, "don't worry about it" and "I've been doing this for 30 years, trust me". OMG, needsometips08, I know exactly what you mean! I had a similar experience with the cabinet maker our designer recommended. I don't think she meant to come off that way but when I asked about thickness of drawer bottoms, she replied, "Don't worry, we know what we're doing." !!! I never implied she didn't. I only wanted to know what we'd be getting for our money. We're not going with that cabinet maker, btw. megpie77, which kind of soapstone do you have? I don't think we have as many options in the PNW (I'm in Portland) as there are in other parts of the country, which is a pity because I've always loved soapstone kitchens. Did you have any problems finding a fabricator? Your kitchen is lovely, btw....See MoreDIY-ers: Where are you buying your cabinets??
Comments (20)joann, above is the pattern you need for IKEA doors. There is one difference, and that is with the insert holes that flank the cup hole. On the standard Blum hinge, they are 8mm, but with IKEA they are 5mm. Apparently, it does not make that big of a difference as the larger cup hole is the most important one. I am sure that your local shop would be able to do that for you. This is the pattern you need for the Blum Integra hinges. You could also buy one of the cheap-o doorfronts at IKEA (the Arlig is $2 a door) and bring that to the shop as a template. That way you could be certain. Remodelfla and Joann, I was speaking of AMZ Cabinet Doors, as Aaron told me that he could drill that pattern for me, and they have a large selection of door designs. I just heard of another possibility, but my contact is coming back to me with that info. If it pans out, and it is better info, I will pass it on to you, if you are interested....See MoreDid you buy your countertops through your cabinet showroom?
Comments (16)We also did not buy our granite through our cabinet showroom. There were many reasons--one was that we were just fed up with our cabinet salesperson/KD and didn't want his firm to make any more money off of our project. We also wanted a better selection and the ability to negotiate the price ourselves. Our KD has a specific fabricator that he pushes (he doens't just sell their granite--he PUSHES it hard). He began giving us the hard sell on his granite fabricator the very first time we met with him and we got the same lecture about the space age granite sealant that this fabricator patented (it turns out that it is actually Sensa granite that is sold at Lowe's!) every time we met with him. After we heard this sales pitch 85 times (and unfortunately we had to hear the entire story--from development of the sealant for the space shuttle to the templating process that is done with a laser and turns out flawless each time!!) I decided that I really wanted to shop around and see what else was out there. We then visited every fabricator in our area and I discovered that I really wanted an exotic granite which unfortunately means more money. Because we dealt with them directly we were able to cut a deal on it. The KD is still pretty bitter about us not buying our granite from him and he tends to blame every problem we have with the cabinets on the granite, but I do not at all regret our decision. Even the cabinet installer who works for the KD said that we got a better deal than using the KD for the granite because they mark up the price so much. Although the installer doesn't have teeth and listens to Rush Limbaugh very loud all day, he may actually be right about this....See MoreWhere to buy quality matchbox latches for cabinets?
Comments (15)elizardbethday, I got them from Cliffside Industries, but I went back to look at them again to post the exact price and now they're $42. My invoice from purchase this past December (2014) says $19.59 each for the same latch. I can't believe how big of a price jump in such a short time. I guess I got lucky. romy718, the countertops are White Cliff from Cambria (93% quartz). We liked them because they are the closest we could find to pure white. They have some very, very light gray speckling– most people can't even see it....See Morebreezygirl
