Black Honed Granite in & scratches fixed!

Yeah! I was worried about the scratches but they buffed out OK. So what do you think about backsplash? Marble? Ceramic? White subway? Mosaics?

I had that color cab and black polished granite in my last kitchen.

I think the carrera might be too grey; your cabs and floors look very warm colored. We used a limestone - actually 4 different ones cut into subway shape.

I used crema marfil marble on the current kitchen. It's also warm colored with very small redish veins... There's a pic here somewhere if I can get my act together!

Thanks Marcy. I'll have to find crema marfil marble locally so I can get a better idea of the color.

Our slate floors are warm but there are also some cool colors in the slate that makes me think I could go either way. With the counters being on the cooler side I kinda want the backsplash to help balance it as bit.

There's not a SS market here. I would not do honed AB because of all the bad things I've read about it re: etching, staining, upkeep etc. It's not a true granite so it doesn't behave like a lot of the other dark granites. From what I've read, they recommend not using an impregnating sealer but a color enhancing sealer. But even then, many have major issues with upkeep. I got so sick of cleaning then polishing my polished (but gorgeous) antique brown that I can't fathom risking adding even more upkeep on a countertop. Here's a detailed article on it by a marble/granite guy and comments below. I know people here have had issues with AB too. I know not everyone has had issues, but IMO it's a crap shoot. I would also love a response to this question as I am considering absolute noir Caesarstone but prefer the matte look of honed granite without the cleaning headache. Hopefully we will get some Corian enthusiasts to reply!

So should I request a new piece of stone or a different one? You don't know yet whether you don't have AB or not. Read the link I posted above called "How to tell if your granite is dyed". Follow the instructions on how to tell. Acetone can be purchased at HD. And, if you find out it's not real AB, it doesn't mean you have to switch it out. It means you have to care for it differently than AB. Read the article I posted above called "What to do if your granite is dyed". Should this be the stoneyard's responsibility? Again, read the articles I linked above. One mentions that often the stoneyard and/or fabricator have no idea that the stone is not AB. Your timeline doesn't make sense. "the marks were there after they used acetone". Why did they apply acetone to newly-installed counters? Are you sure it wasn't the first application of sealant, then perhaps they applied a second application of sealant? (I am guessing here) Again, I repeat, AB does not etch, and it does not need sealant because it is so dense. It is too dense for sealant to penetrate. The marks in the pics look like wipe marks, i.e. sealant was wiped on, and then it dried sitting on top of the surface, creating the haze in a wiping pattern. Again, as Littlesmokie and I said previously, this is easily solved by removing the sealant with acetone.

The marks you see are physical etching to the surface from by the looks either a strong bleach product or drain cleaner. Why it is getting worse, we would say that someone has repaired or attempted to hide the marks using a bandaid solution . By adding some like like baby oil or white oil to the surface. This will disguise the issue for a short period though as you clean the surface it will dissolve the oils out and leaving the white spots or marks again. Being Matte you will be able to use a special microporosity impregnating sealer that will solve the issue. Other than having it properly repaired by a stonemason. You will need to do the following steps Clean the entire countertops with acetone. Remove any contamination on grante Apply the Ager to the white spots or marks first with kitchen paper Allow to penetrate for 5 minutes Apply the Ager to the whole countertop - this will make it uniform in colour Allow to penetrate for 5 mintue Follow the directions on the tin to remove excess Allow to cure out, you can speed this process up with a hair dryer. The products you will need are Acetone - 1 Quartz Tenax Ager Clean white cloth Kitchen Paper or Towel If you get stuck or would like more information email us at stains@stonebenchtopcleaner.com.au Uniblack is the wrong product to use in this application will make it blacker in areas and patchy being honed or leathered granite, the acetone will take this back out.

I like the idea of subways in a color that coordinates with your flooring which I love BTW. On my monitor the floor tiles appear to have different colors-could you post some pics of just the floor??

You have what looks to be a very classic, clean lined kitchen so subways would certainly look great OR you could go in the opposite direction and do something wild and crazy for the backsplash. It really all depends on what look you like best.

Yes, the floor has LOTS of colors. Because the floors are so wild, I do want to keep the backsplash simple. Here's a pic:

Now that I can see your floor better, I agree that the backsplash should be very simple/quiet as to not compete with the floor. The floor is beautiful and has lots of colors to play with. I would take a picture of the floor to a tile store to look at some backsplash tiles. Some stores will lend you samples to take home. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing the marble you posted with this floor. Try looking at some simple subway tiles in a light color like a cream or like the first pic you posted where it's showing on my monitor as a soft green/blue/gray color. Take your time to get it right. I have very busy granite so it was really hard when it came to deciding on a backsplash.
If you want advice from people here you can post again with some pics of your cabinets, granite, floor with the backsplash samples you bring home. Have fun!!!
