You could get a piece of the Basalt Slate in the matte (smooth) finish for the peninsula? Unless, of course, you want the 2 colors. I love the honed finish, too, but we didn't end up with any when I changed color schemes.

I don't think that would work very well in laminate or with two colors so close together. Laminate corners are 45° instead of the 90° that is most commonly used when joining two different counter types. Also, when two different counter types are used, typically a height difference is also used to be able to transition better. And, having two colors so close together but not the same would appear to be a mistake to most, rather than a deliberate design choice.

If you love the Basalt Slate, why not consider having an inlay of Corian, butcherblock, or marble in a select "baking" location away from any water source. It would be a nice accent in that it would be obviously a deliberate design choice based on functionality. Most good laminate fabricators can work with you on something like this.

Also, don't forget to get quotes from many different sources for your counters including stone yards for granite. Granite is not as expensive as you think it is, and it remains a top countertop choice not just for beauty, but because it's highly functional as well.
