My 10 year old is totally obsessed with baking. She does it all from scratch, cleans up and serves. Once I couldn't run out for a missing ingredient so she rode her bike to the grocery store (with 16 year old brother) to buy it with her own allowance money!

I was just looking at my phone and found this picture that she obviously took, I didn't know. I guess she's really proud of her prep work, and she thinks the ingredients are beautiful!

I found this thread not only interesting, but it was also the kick in the pants that got me to do something about the repeatedly failing water intake valve/solenoid on my Miele Optima (G2420-SCI). The unit was installed new in 2008-2009. We moved into the house in early 2013, and by August that year we experienced our first failure. I do not know if the valve failed in the interval between 2009-2013. I called the local factory authorized installer, and they came out promptly. As I learned after the 2nd failure, they didn’t replace the entire hose/wire/valve, but simply cracked the case and wired-in a new valve. They charged me price of entire unit. Eighteen months later, same problem. I found some info on retrofitting the Miele valve with a GE valve, but I guess I was too timid to try it then. So, I called Miele and explained the problem. They comp’d me 33% on the new part, and this time they changed out the entire assembly. It worked fine until July ’16 when it developed same problem. This time they comp’d me the entire part and did another replacement. Every time they checked the inlet water temp it was below 130 degrees. The new part installed in August ’16 has barely lasted 8 months! We tried to use the machine over Easter weekend, and it came up with the same humming sounds of no water coming in and then popping off the “F12” fault code. After embarrassingly spending/wasting $1000 on 3 valve replacements, I finally decided to look back into the GE valve, and that’s how I got here. I was a GardenWeb member for years before Houzz, but lost touch, until I found this thread. Good x2. I followed the instructions on the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LaqSO-Oyuw I opted to use the GE WD15X10003 valve as per the video, and not the WD15X93, mentioned earlier in this thread. As far as I could tell online, the two units are functionally comparable. The bracket and molded switch housing of the X93 are somewhat different, necessitated by the fact that the X93 is designed to be tucked into a cramped under-washer position in a GE system. It is also about $10 cheaper than the X10003, but the X10003 was available by Prime on Amazon, so I could fix it right away. I would guess that any of a number of these valves would be fine, since they would sit on the floor of the under-sink cabinet, and not require specific in-machine installation. The water inlet connection on the GE valve is a 3/8” Female iron pipe thread (FIP). My water source connector is a S/S flex hose with a 3/8” female compression fitting. To mate them I needed to pick up a 3/8” male-male brass connector with one end MIP and the other a compression thread. Connecting them was no problem, but getting them leak-free at the MIP-FIP connection was a bit of an issue. One has to hold the valve in one hand while tightening with the other and it’s hard to get a good grip on the valve portion. I used plumber’s tape first, but on the second try I used 1 wrap of plumber’s tape and a thread filler-sealer called “Hercules Block.” It’s a somewhat messy blue paste, but it did the trick. The wire connections were straightforward, just as explained in the video. I test ran it twice yesterday, and it worked normally, just as the OEM valve, and so far, there are no leaks. The time between failure and repair was only 3 days (not the typical Miele 3 weeks), and the out-of-pocket costs for valve, connector, sealer, electrical connectors was $40. (not $450+). The satisfaction of DIY, and un-shackling from the burdensome, confiscatory Miele system?....priceless. My only regret is that I should have done this after the 2nd failure...or the 3rd...slow learner, I guess.

How would you know at that age if the baby has a tendency towards allergies? Well, if there is a family history of food allergies, you start more carefully. And whether there is or not you start with the low allergy foods introducing one at a time following the 4 day rule. And if a food does cause a reaction, you stop using it - it isn't a big deal. One of our children had a milk allergy when we introduced it as a baby so we stopped using it and after a few years tried again with no issues. Why didn't we wait to introduce egg white - a) her mother wanted to introduce it at about 11 months so she could know whether egg in the 1st birthday cake would be okay and b) Passover occurs right around her 1st birthday and there are recipes I use then that rely on egg white like sponge cake so we wanted to know whether that would be an issue. Everyone has to decide for themselves based partly on family history and how the first foods go. I think it is important for parents to have the information to make an informed decision so I reference the Wholesome Baby Food site which presents a balanced view IMO - neither alarmist or ignoring the issue. By the way, one baking tip - a few people have a cinnamon allergy. One of my son's friends does and I found out that it is usually Cassia cinnamon (what you find in the grocery store as cinnamon but it isn't true cinnamon - it is a related plant) that causes the allergy. True cinnamon (or Ceylon cinnamon) doesn't have the compound that is the usual allergy trigger - you can get it at Penzeys or The Spice House. That is what we introduced to our granddaughter first and it has allowed our son's friend to share foods that we make with cinnamon.

Broiled Arancini Italian Rice Balls (Arancini) These rice balls are great as an appetizer or a main meal with a nice salad and broccoli and garlic side dish. 1 lb white rice 4 eggs 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1 lb mozzarella cheese, cut in 16 cubes 1 1/2 cups Italian seasoned breadcrumbs olive oil Cook rice until sticky. Let cool. Mix rice, 4 egg yolks and grated cheese in large bowl. Form rice mixture into balls (the size of a large meatball)) enclosing cube of Mozzarella inside each rice ball. Beat egg whites. Dip each rice ball in beaten egg whites and then in bread crumbs. Drizzle with olive oil and broil on all sides until well browned. To serve, split open and top with tomato sauce. Makes 12 to 14.

I like to buy all kinds of fresh-baked goods at farmer's markets. I end up making lots of scones and muffins for teachers' meetings, so I just wanted to add a few recipes here. I have some sources (if I do, I'll name it) and some I do not (just didn't note it at the time I saved the recipe). I didn't create the recipe and I may or may not have tweaked these recipes. These always work out great for me! I also added a couple of other recipes I make a lot when I need something in bulk. Hope some work for you! I love, love the vanilla ones (I usually double the recipe)...but the huge hit...pumpkin scones. I doctor up the spice glaze to make it spicier and darker in color than written below. I get asked to make these for every event. (I usually triple the pumpkin recipe since these tend to be more in demand.) There's an old-fashioned crumb cake (I think that's what it's called) in the KA cookbook that I make all the time, too. It's similar to one of the recipes posted on the coffee cake thread. ******************* Scones ====== 1 cup unsalted butter, cold 4 Â¼ cups unbleached all-purpose flour Â½ cup sugar 2 teaspoon baking powder Â½ teaspoon baking soda Â¼ teaspoon salt 2 liquid cups heavy cream 1 cup chocolate chips (see variations) Equipment: 2 half sheet pans lined with nonstick liners such as Silpat or parchment a baking stone or a baking sheet Oven Temperature: 400ËF Baking Time: 15 to 20 minutes Servings: 12 or 16 4-in by 1 Â½-in high scones 1. Chill the butter. Cut butter into 1" cubes. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or freeze for 10 minutes. 2. Mix the dough. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the butter and with your fingertips, press the cubes into large flakes. (Or use an electric mixer, mixing until the butter is the size of small walnuts.) Stir in the cream just until the flour is moistened and the dough starts to come together in large clumps. Stir in the chips. Knead the dough in the bowl just until it holds together, and turn it our onto a lightly floured board. 3. Preheat the oven. Pretty darn special. Our chef son has a 2 yr old soon to be 3 who helps knead bread and can toss veggies in a pretend skillet like his Dad does...it is never too soon to applaud their talent. Congrats on a great DD and a very special Mom and big bro ! c

awesome! don't tell her but she is learning math and science while making her creations! i hope it is as good for your tummy as it is for her brain:)
btw my kids and their friends think my cookies are gourmet and i too started baking at 10. kids will be lining up at your door for her baked goods!
also want to say you are a great mom for letting her do this! i know it is hard to watch someone else bake in your space:)

So adorable! I would guess that she was making chocolate cookies or brownies, but I can't tell what the ingredient between the salt and the baking powder is. A cake would need more liquid.

I got started early too, but I started with bread, although I had no way of buying ingredients on my own, since I was three miles from the nearest store and did not receive an allowance.

She is definitely learning good skills.

I got one like that too....but she doesn't cleanup as well as yours. She's 14 now. Enjoy it...now when I want cookies, I just have to ask and voila...homemade cookies appear.

When I was 16 I wanted to make a Black Forest Cake from scratch. I needed Kirsch. I rode my bike to the liquor store to ask if they would sell it to me if it was for cooking. No, of course not. I had to wait until my dad came home and got me some.

So organized AND neat! Gotta love it!

Curious does she have favorites of what she likes to make? Cookies, cake or everything? And does she use cookbooks or favorite websites?

My 14 year old niece is into baking now, but just branching out into scratch. However sis said it looks like a bomb went off in the kitchen after she's done (like her Aunt Island!) so I'll have to share this with her.

Just want to say: It's **never** to early to teach kids how to cook. Unfortunately, my OH never had a lesson and seems to have been banned from the kitchen. He can't cook, most of the time doesn't clean up, and hasn't a clue where anything is - except for knives that are on a magnetic board in plain view! Tell all your daughters not to marry a man who - at the very least - can't measure out ingredients or throw a salad together.

strayer, I hope you're telling your budding baker how many fans she has here. ;-)

Tomatofreak. Anyone who can read, open a box/can or boil water can learn to cook, some just choose not to because someone else does it for them. Same with cleaning up and finding stuff in a pantry. It's called enabling and never too late to change that. Honey you're in charge of salad tonite. Try it.

What an awesome child! The planning and organization strike me as very mature. The skills that she is displaying are going to stand her in very good stead in everything she does! This is indeed a very important step in her development - it took me years to be organized when baking!!

It's awesome that you as a parent let her do this!! My mom didn't really like us getting in the way and making a mess in the kitchen, so I didn't learn to enjoy cooking/baking until I was older....

so, good for her!! But good for you too!! :-)

I have no idea why, but this brought tears to my eyes!
She's learning math, science, (as stated) but evidently kitchen staging skills! She could end up an actual chef, who also illustrates her work with her own photos.

In the meanwhile, be prepared to spend a fortune on ingredients for sports teams, bake sales, and of course, Christmas. LOL Because everyone's going to want her products.

My sisters and I also learned to bake young. I, at 10, which meant my sister at 8.5, and the next, helping us at 6. Unfortunately, my youngest sister had to learn to cook as an adult. She has kids. She burned pasta on the stove. She's improved in the last 20 years. LOL!

I've been away and just got the chance to read all these posts which are so sweet and encouraging. She was making crispy chocolate cookies with cream centers, like homemade oreos I guess.

This all started because she has a huge sweet tooth. I don't, so I can't sympathize. I was worried about her always wanting sweets, so I told her that I was not going to buy them, but if she wanted to she could make them herself from scratch. So she started and it turned into a love for baking. Now she enjoys the process more than the actual sweets I think.

Next she wants to learn bread, cinnamon rolls, croissants...

When we redid the kitchen her one request was that she have her own electrical outlet on the opposite side of the island from where I usually plug in. If I knew I had a baker on my hands I might have also tried to fit in 2 dishwashers and a bigger sink!

She decided that a completely separate catering kitchen where she can make her mess, and save our pretty kitchen for show and serving, would be perfect. I told her to study hard and get a good degree if she wants 2 kitchens in her future house!

Good thing I found GW when remodeling our kitchen last year. I was advised to go drawers, big drawers, more drawers, and even more drawers. Good thing because all that baking stuff takes up a lot of room!
