OT-dining room table pads

Does anyone use these? I would like to get one ordered for DD1 to help protect her walnut table, and just might get one for myself after all these years. Just wondering if anyone has a favorite place where they have ordered one (maybe I should have asked this when that thread was going around about dining room tables . . .)

I ordered mine several years ago from customtablepads.com or some very similar place online. I don't use them under a tablecloth ('cuz I don't use tablecloths!) but they are great for those times when the DR table is being used for big gift wrapping projects or DS is using it to put together a school poster or other project.

We use them but they came with the table, which we inherited from DW's Grandfather.
There are lots of places on the internet that make them.

"Conversely, a glass top would be more cumbersome, expensive, and could potentially damage the table (would need your help verifying this). " Why do you think so? Cumbersome? It just sits there. You really do not need to move it. Expensive? Mine was less than $75. Damage? I have had the same sheet of glass on my eat-in kitchen's butcher block table for almost 20 years. The table looks as good as the day we bought it. On the other hand... the dining room table with the pads? The pads are bulky and need a storage place when not in use; they cost several hundred dollars.

Well I had seen ads in the back of magazines ad. table pads so I got mine from 800/737-3150 Berger's table Pad Factory out of Indianapolis,IN..Anyway they also have a website and when I placed my order either the print ad or internet site was cheaper and when I mentioned it, they gave me the cheaper price. Make sure you get the upgrade to the magnetic lock that joins the two halves and leaves together so they don't slip around. Also, at the time if you ordered a second pad for a buffet etc. you could get that for $40 extra so I did. They will send you a sample kit with colors etc and they have some manuf table bases in their data bases or just give them the measurements. I also opted to get the bags that are lined on the inside to put the leaves into and I'm glad I did that too. Very nice company to work with. I'm sure if you google them you can find them. Good luck and that sure gave me peace of mind when I got my new dining room table 2 yrs ago and I'm so glad I did,,don't have to worry about kids or husband now.

I like Ohio Table Pad Company. They make custom table pads in several different thicknesses and colors. The one I have is covered in a wood grain pattern and is heat resistant, so I don't need to use trivets for most dishes. The pad is in hinged sections that open and connect with hook and loop tabs between each large section so they don't come apart during use, and has felt underneath and a wood grain vinyl covering. Although you can tell it's a table pad on close inspection, I tend to leave it on most of the time to protect the table top. Their prices and service are wonderful. Then I use a soft thick felt water resistant "silencer" on top of that when I use a tablecloth. I love Annie's idea of cutting her vinyl-backed fabric to fit the table and considered doing that, but instead I tape the edges under the table with masking tape so it doesn't shift or interfere with the draping of the tablecloth.

OT: Lighting help for the dining room

Someone with more expertise than I have can add on... I think there is a product that allows you to bridge across the ceiling from the light attachment box to the actual place you want to be--not a long distance, though. I think there may be some kind of coverup camouflage piece. Also, consider using a ceiling medallion, perhaps coupled with some kind of donut of trim between it and the ceiling to camouflage the jog. ____ There are fixtures that suspend a faux tray of faux fat candle lighting from a single spot on ceiling (or some such in another design). The width of such a piece may help you deal with the oddity. ___ How much is this worth to you? We have this situation and it always bugs me--the ceiling patch that was badly done. Get a price on having the attachment spot moved to the proper place and the ceiling repaired, just so you have a good frame of reference. As for me, I'm going to use the camouflage using a medallion, once I get the medallion made.

I just use a felt, but my table is only for eating (and the occasional meeting), and is reclaimed old wood. A little more distressing won't harm it. Hard, custom pads that fold are far superior, especially if the table is going to be used for homework, crafts, etc., rather than just eating. The new ones have magnets to hold them together, which means shifting isn't a problem, but I'd still want hooks on the edges to hold the breaks together. You can usually order them through better furniture stores, though I'm sure the ones online are pretty much the same thing. The only thing is getting an exact template. It's nicer when the store measures...and is responsible for getting it right.

When we changed the formal dining room into a playroom and our dining room table went to the office in the basement, we got one. I narrowed it down to two companies online - one of which I think was customtablepads.com but I am not 100% sure. We have loved it b/c now the table is used a lot as a horizontal work space in the basement and we aren't afraid of hurting it. Once the table makes its way back upstairs, I am not sure how often we will use it b/c like sharonite, I never use table cloths.
