You can hang pendants from track lighting, so that will give you both options. I have that option. I would have preferred pendants, but I can't live without my pot rack so opted for track lighting in my kitchen project last year (a small tide-me-over update). This is by no means my first choice, but the best option considering my budget, the fact we DIY'd it, and we discovered big problems in the ceiling awaiting the someday kitchen gut remodel.

I like the pendants a lot, but also really like the option of pointing the track lights where I needed them. AND, track lighting is DIY friendly.

From my reading, the bottom of pendants are usually hung about 30-32" from counter. For me, that's right about eye level. I decided against pendats for my island as the FR is open on the other side of the island where I'll stand to do my prepping. I'm easily annoyed and figured the lights would seem like they were in my face. I didn't want to give up the idea of pretty pendants so I'm hanging two over my peninsula open the DR.

Another thing to consider is your ceiling height. If you decide to hang pendants 32" from counter and your ceilings are 91" like mine, then you'll have 23" of space for both the pendant and the chain/rod/cord. Some pendants would look silly hung at that height. OTOH, I usually don't like track lighting.

There's 52" between the ceiling and counter. Hmmmm. I think I'd probably be fine with pendants, but I think they'd need to be on the smaller side. We removed cabinets from where they will hang, so I feel like if I have them hanging down, it will feel like we just closed off the space we meant to open up.
