End of Day 15...progress is slowing!

This has been a quiet week. I have had a nasty cold so was very happy to have an empty house. The install guys showed up today and replaced my upper cabinets with the correct ones. They look pretty and are all ready for their knobs and lights. Electrician is still waiting for puck lights to arrive so that is on hold. Downdraft in island was put in place and confirmed that our setup works, now I can notify the soapstone place about final measurements. We still have stuff on back order, which is slowing progress down. What do I miss most....running water in the kitchen!!! Doing dishes in the bathroom upstairs is a hassle. But at least I have an oven now.

Back side of island with motor of downdraft, the side under the cooktop will have drawers for my pots. I am pleased with how it is working out

Project for the weekend, hanging the picture over the banquette bench. I can hardly wait to see it mounted! It will look so pretty with my wall colours. Happy Thanksgiving (Canadian) everyone!

Great pics! I have one butia in shade that is painfully slow growing (actually shrunk a little in the past 3 years. I Planted another butia by a south facing brick wall this past spring and it has grown 4 fronds and 3 inches of trunk in its first summer! Sun seems to make a huge difference for my butias! What I plan to use is Miracle Gro Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables, as I have heard that the generic bags of top soil can be from anywhere, including what was scraped up from the wreckage of New Orleans after Katrina. If you go that route be sure to get the product designed for in ground use. There is another one to be used for containers. I've also added compost whenever replanting a square. Not familiar with the E.B.Stone product, but usually Lowe's has a few different kinds of compost on sale, and we have composted horse manure and leaf mold here, giving us a lot of variety. Another thought I had about this water drainage issue is that we went to great trouble not to mention expense, to use vermiculite when we established the beds. I've read where many people can't find it and so modify the mix to some extent. I wonder if actually having 1/3 of the soil in vermiculite might be contributing to the upper range dry soil problem in that it only facilitates the drainage of the soil (if I understand its use correctly, eg, to lighten the soil). Whatever, in my garden most of the moisture is ending up in the bottom of the square even with daily strong rains. I don't see how adding some *good* top soil can't do anything but help. But I've been wrong before! :-) Last but not least, a soil test should give us a non-guesswork idea of what might be off with the bed contents.

Ask your plaster applicator what they think. My understanding is if you spray down the plaster you may get streaks in the finish. I would not do that without asking first. We don't even plaster if rain is forecast in the next 24 hours. Once the pool has some water in it you should be able to safely turn the water up to increase flow. Ideally the pool should fill within 24 hours. You could use two hoses if your pressure is too low. We always duct tape a white cloth rag around the end of the hose to diffuse the water flow and reduce the chance of scratching. Do not turn the hose up so high that it is whipping around the floor of the pool.

Hi Cori Ann - I'm a big proponent of the "mulch and don't wait" school of enriching soil, but I start with decent soil in the first place. It's clay, but loamy clay, so once I can get past the rocks and whatever else was growing instead of roses (like, horrors, a LAWN), I have decent stuff to work with. I do the usual lasagne method over the top of the grass or whatever, since I am wayyyyy too lazy to double dig anything (once at my old house, and never again). When I have a new area I want to turn into a garden, I give myself maybe a day's lead time (but fine if not) to do the following: - lay down cardboard, paper bags and/or newspapers, and cover with organic stuff like leaves, compost, vegetable trimmings, or whatever - usually 3-5" thick at least - Add some cheater topsoil to jumpstart the breakdown process - maybe 1" - top with leaves as top mulch, not necessary to shred if you have something to hold them in place (too much like work) or mulch if you're not cheap like me. A good additional 3" or so of these will break down over the season to enrich the whole bed. - Go ahead and plant where I jolly well want to. Dig a hole through the lasagne layers into the crappy soil, and mix all of the above into the planting hole, chopping vigorously at the vicious little grubs as you find them (good for the soul as well as soil). I always add some extra manure and compost as well as alfalfa when I plant (even in established beds), mixed about 1/3 with the rest regular soil, so this prepares the hole a little extra. - Let the worms do your work for you, to even out the discrepancy between your Cadillac planting hole and Nova rest of the bed. You don't want to create a huge sink if you have super clay soil, where all the water pools in your good hole and rots your rose, so by conditioning the rest of the soil while you plant you get the best of both worlds. Not having to wait, but not really leaving the rest of the bed on its own either. - When some of your roses die (as half of them will in zone 5 for me), plant the new rose in a slightly different spot from the old one to expand the Cadillac-ness of the rest of the bed. - Keep everything mulched with leaves or other organic material indefinitely to keep feeding your soil for a minimum of work, and maximum benefit with minimum wait time. Make those worms WORK for their grub. I've done this dozens of times in soil that you couldn't get a pitchfork into without serious sweat, and ended up mid-season with soil good enough to flip with a hand tool. The copious amounts of organic material mixed in with some real soil does it for me, and I don't fuss with waiting at all. Of course that's my soil and yours may differ. Cynthia

a2...I feel for you! Cushions will only be on the bottom and I am in love with the bluebells that 2littlefishies used on her banquette. Currently that is what I am thinking if I can find the fabric. Might get a runner down the center of the table made also from it. As far as table goes, I havent looked too much (small problem called cash flow!) and I want to make sure that it is easy to get around, but I love the look of this table.

Sweet - I remember 2 fishes gorgeous fabric on her banquet. Lovely table as well - what type of wood is on the top?

Also - if you have any Amish furniture stores around -they might be able to make what you want. I bought my rise up table and they customized it for me (the original was not a rise up table and they modified the dimensions and added the lift mechanism.

a2 according to the website, the top of the table is wormy maple with a walnut stain. I am fortunate to live in the heart of Mennonite Ontario so there are lots of options for custom made tables. The biggest decision right now seems to be what size and what shape and what sort of base would work best. I do like the look of that table though, it seems like it would suit the kitchen if the size was right. The wood top would bring out some of the brown tones in the cork floor.

Same cold here, too. Miserable.

But I'd feel better if my kitchen was where yours is! Those lights are cool. The table you show is nifty, too!

Deedles, the progress of the kitchen helps, but getting rid of the cold would thrill me even more at this point! Hope you feel better soon...and thanks!

tam...I live in Ontario so its a Canadian place, but they have nice stuff. Look for the Jackson table. For some reason there website seems to be acting up a bit.
